- This won't be easy....Government forces me to take down my trees! Come along with me on the farm today as we take a bad situation....and make it into something wonderful. We'll be clearing new pasture land for the cattle...and getting prepped to install our septic system! Hope ya'll enjoy!

everywhere is like this....my county is pretty forgiving and reasonable....but it still was quite irritating . We took a lemon and made lemonade! Be sure ya stick around for part 3!! Oh...and I just bought a rock picker this morning!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer In Alabama, I built my home without anything required but a septic tank design. No permission required to clear land or build, not even a building inspector in my county. Most building inspectors and regs I've encountered are completely worthless.
We have a rental in Hickory NC, becoming too much like NJ.....thats why we hang our hats in TN....
@@Lowzone73 We had land in Lincoln County TN, TN was terrible to deal with so that's why we ended up back in AL. Glad it worked out for you. We sold our TN property.
Practice makes prefect, you are doing a great job, wish I was doing the same thing, enjoy every minute. Finally planted some apple trees on my property love the edible plants.

I like to believe that everyone is entitled to have an opinion. The project that you are working on is on property that is your and really your opinion is the one that counts. If you want suggestions you can ask for it but people need to look at the videos as entertainment not a tutorial on how they would attack a project that you are working on. Thanks for the videos...💝

How to improve your operator skills? Just operate and learn. I was in your shoes a few years back when I bought my first excavator and was scared of my machine. Seat time is the best teacher!

Here in Eastern North Carolina, they use mound systems and other means because there isn’t enough land that is suitable for septic systems. My motto is it is never impossible unless you are dead.

The clearing is going to enhance the outdoor kitchen area to top notch! The gentle breeze blowing through, and the views! You might find yourself at the end of a hard day falling asleep there.

Josh, while you have the excavator, get all the stones and rocks put in a pile. You might want to build either a beautiful wall near the mega-shop, or a water feature. Both would add to your forever home.
Just some ideas, that might save you some work in the future.
I think Stan was getting certified in installing water features. I would definitely get his opinion.

A friend of mine had a neighbor who used to throw stones in their farm. In that area, stones are scarce red volcanic soil. He really wanted to fight but the mother forbade him.Later the guy built with them to the envy of the neighbor.

When using that thumb to pick things up and move trees. Put the thumb down and leave it. Use the bucket to pick things up. When the thumb is not needed pick it up and leave it up.
As for getting better at operating this machine. Just use it. In most cases. Less movement of those controls is better.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Some of those big rocks would make a nice landscape rock garden area next to the outdoor kitchen pavilion. Or water feature.
why not do the perk test before clearing all that land? few holes dug in various areas would have given the drainage results needed.
we already did the perk test and the land perked where we had to remove the trees....that's why I'm clearing my brotha...we already did it and this is where I have to put my septic
When walking the machine use the foot pedals instead of your hands much easier
Meanwhile in WI..48°F. Seriously between all those trees and stones, you could have all the building materials to build a gorgeous home.
hmmm....well not really but we could have a pile of firewood and some logs to mill on the sawmill. Most of these trees are not very large
The biggest hint that I have is that if you were more meticulous with the placement of the debris, it would be much easier to move later. You do seem to have the finesse in the operation of the excavator.
Watching the movements of the excavator in the time-lapse portions looks similar to the claymation dinosaurs in the 70s TV show, "Land of the Lost".

It’s the same here in Ga you have to do the perk test and get approval before you clear .. If you clear first they will fail you..
Just learning from the local Department of Natural Resources, is that piled-up debris helps the wildlife habitat as well, some animals use it for dens, or hiding from the massive amounts of coyotes we have in our state.
sure does....and helps foxes build dens to eat my chickens lol

It would fall easier if you cut the roots first. You will still have to dig them up though.
these are all pretty small trees...they simply push right over in most cases
Governments can be a pain in the ass at times... silly policies that don't work everywhere or even work at times 😅.. Great vid though.. stay safe 🏴
the only pain in my side on this farm is the Govt and insurance.from paying income tax, sales tax and and whatever else they can tax....to $5k in insurance to prevent someone from suing me and or in case of a fire. Without taxes and insurance my bills would be about $400 per month here on the farm.....total monthly expenditures!

Saw the trunks off the tree while grappling them with bucket in air.. saw up the trees for firewood for open air kitchen.. get all the rocks up into the drive way.. use as decorative rock concrete driveway at main road entrance. You dont want to drive on the septictank after its in.. its a no drive zone.. put boulders around it . Burn the tree roots for wood ash fertilizer and put on cow fields..
you understand that we don't have a month to get this done right? There's a million things you can do, but we've got the excavator rented at nearly $1600 per day....we aint saving $30 worth of firewood ...we gotta roll with this my friend
Other than time on the sticks, dig around the roots some they go over much easier. If it does not want to move don't lift get closer and use the bucket to curl agent the ground to help lift and move. Keep the load as close to you as you can and not hit the machine, or anything else. When moving long trees you may need to get tracks parallel to the tree, keeping the tree as close as you can track it to where you want to go. Just be mindful of tracking 30 to 90 deg across a slope depending on how steep it is.
I have a Kubota KX 033. I am NC in the foot hills of of 40. I have puled 50 and 60 ft pines up a hill you can barely walk up. Hook a chain to it and using the boom blade and tracks inch worm it directly up the slope. It not often it is the first mistake that gets you, but the second or third one is what bites you! Watch what your doing and be safe.

i been thinking that cattle panels modified to form a cage and then fill with rocks may need to add more rebar to panels so hold stone smaller than large grapefruit
could use make compost containment or wood pile area
possibly even a water crossing bridge supports

here in Washington State by Wenatchee orchard Farmers use to terrace the areas along the Columbia River for vineyard and orchard also to claim gound to build homes on

Hey Josh I used to have 100 Acre hunting lease wasn't anything nearly as nice as yours but at one point I had to clear several 5-acre for food plots one of the things I found that helped the burning of the excess wood I went to a estate sale and bought one of the big cement round Culver connections that worked for the tons of small stuff but the big stuff I would put it in a pile and my neighbor one time told me he goes why don't you run a steel pipe from like 40 ft away right into the center of the fire and once you get it going just stick leaf blower on the end of it they cut the burn time more than half I also had a tendency of walking around the outside of a fire when I had the burn pastures when I ended up with my neighbor's property I'd get the weather report find out which way the wind was supposed to produce all day and we would use leaf blowers get a Ripon fire that way the people that did it with me were quite surprised how quickly it went only had to use one rechargeable fire extinguisher the whole day

Would help you more when up rooting trees work your bucket underneath the tree and roll your bucket upwards keeping your bucket forced against the ground for leverage
Why didn’t you use an Aerobic system rather than the archaic leech field. Would have been a lot cheaper and shows to be a legal alternative in North Carolina. In Texas many counties only allow aerobic systems.

probably be putting hogs way on the other side of the farm in the forest....I have about 25 acres of untouched forest land

yep...sometimes we just push it down the hill and let things rot. I got several loads of firewood out of this, but it would take 1 man a year to cut through all that wood...some gets saved, some gets pushed into a gully. Here's one for ya....I can't give away firewood!! I've offered firewood to folks and they never come get it....around here it's plentiful

Oh, The spoltfor the septic drain field failed the perk test. Well that's more or less to save you grief in the future.
I agree with you. It may be a hassle but it could potentially save you thousands of dollars in the future. My neighbor learned this the hard way. His system was sized for a normal 3/2 house, except his is a multi-generational family living in one residence. The he proceeded to build a "pool house" that is as large as the primary residence which was tacked on to the original septic system. The only modification made was to add to the field lines. This past week they excavated a HUGE hole and backfilled with stone to serve as the new field system. I'll bet it cost well north of $15K.
The government isn’t forcing you to remove trees. It’s your choice to remove them or not
It is a bad idea to have trees too close to a septic tank. It’s a good idea to have a garden near a septic tank.
All I’m saying is he should have had it perc tested before he did any clearing.

Is it possible that the township and government are working to try a force people to get contracts to clear trees for the septic system.

Guess your firewood & lumber mill projects are on back burners. Some of these projects you've got could finance some part time help. Some of those trees you uprooted could be turned into uprights for a pole barn for your lumber mill & lumber storage area. Just a thought 🤔.
yep....can't save them all my friend....time is my most valuable commodity. We will harvest some firewood from this pile, but can't save them all

not enough trees here....remember a logging company has to set up the operation, bring in millions of $$$$ worth of equipment for something that would take them 1 day to cut...not worth it...most of these trees would just be chipped up
This makes no sense to me. They won't allow the dirt to perk cause you"disturbed" it but tell you the woods is fine you need to remove the trees cause that spot will perk??? 🤷🏻♂️ Knowing when you remove the trees and tumps and root rake that spot your going to be "disturbing" the dirt in that area??🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ This makes no sense!!?? If tell you to dig me a 6-8ft deep hole to prove that your "disturbed" are in the chosen spot was only surface disturbance and we're not sitting on 15ft of fill and loose material, and that your spot is virgin undisturbed dirt under the surface and then allow you to put your tank/field where you initially wanted.
It's all about power/control/money, not about serving as was the original intent. Y'all know what I mean...

Hey Josh ,my 2 cents again , do you think any loggers around you would buy your downed timber , unfortunately I recently I had a timber company spend 2 years with breakdowns and personal business to cut approximately 20 acres . I received a payment of approximately $5,500.00 boy do I feel ripped. God bless old buddy.
not enough timber there to harvest ....rememeber they have to come set up with a chipper and about a million bucks worth of equipment...there's about 1/2 days work here and would take them 3 days to set up
What's a rock picker? Too bad you can't save the rocks for around your flow thru dock! Lake shore owners pay big bucks to do that. Forget a chainsaw holy Jesus! Back to rip rap! The previous neighbor, before this one, snow plowed an 'ICE ROAD TRUCKER' and trucked the huge rocks over ice in a COLD winter. Always thought that was pretty smart.

I had a similar issue. I had the state come out and plot area for septic on my 2 bedroom barndominium. When I went to complete the building permit, the county said my office was considered a BEDROOM! They made me get another septic permit! Another $500. I had to move where the field lines were going and add over 170' of lines! Ugh! They also said I must not disturb the land! Why didn't you save some of the trees for milling or fire wood. Was it to time consuming to cut them down and saw into lengths. Or is it give a kid a toy and we have to what it will do and you do have a big sand box, I really don't care because at the end of the day you're the farmer and you have to learn how to operate all types of equipment to run the farm
time....time and more time my friend. Milling lumber and storing lumber is quite the chore. I have piles of firewood and lumber all over the farm with nowhere to store them....in the interest of time we cleared these trees...most of which were too small to put on the mill

my man....here's what I did....I could hire and engineer and fight this...spend countless hours and about $5k....or I could take what I've been told is acceptable, invest $5k into my land....increase my home's value and better my property without spinning my wheels in a fight with the gov't over 30 feet of septic line. Choose your battles my friend....this way I win....the land is more beautiful and we're both satisfied. It's not "compliance" .....it's simply a battle better fought in a different way. Stand up and waste time and money or stand up and improve my property value by 10 times as much as the engineer hire and the fight. Sometimes the best battles are won without someone knowing you beat them my brother. You can fight to the end...but in the end what are ya gonna get? In this case a septic system 30 feet from where they said it was ok?

Newsflash! Before it was tobacco farmland it was a forest. Also, if you're tearing the trees down just for the view then why do you live there in the first place? Move to the desert like in Arizona if you want uninterrupted views of the mountains.

Hey Josh.. love all your content!! I recommend you save all your big bolder rocks 🪨. Power wash them and place them on pallets since you got the excavator there. You spend so much money on your beautiful farm and at least you can get a good amount of money out of them. I’m in the construction industry and they go for a fortune. Check it out in landscaping industry and retaining wall insulation. I am just sending you all the best wishes! God bless you!!
