    That “Rocket” intro made me question reality for a second. There’s usually an “uncanny valley” with a lot of “here’s how you get this tone” videos, but that was like 99.999999% right. A lot can also be credited to your phenomenal talent for nailing the nuance of the playing. Given how notoriously multi-tracked the guitar parts were on the recording, do you multi-track your recorded riffs in your videos?

  • @doubled5383
    @doubled5383 4 дні тому +1

    I think you can use an expression pedal on the deco and sweep the lag time. Would act like an Electric Mistress sweep. Could be wrong, but I just bought an expression pedal to try it. Also I regularly use the MXR Q Zone as a filter effect - gets the Mick Ronson Ziggy Stardust sound or the Rocket filter sound.

    • @EddieClark
      @EddieClark  18 годин тому

      That would definitely work as well for the intro filter sweep on Rocket. I use the Deco lag time to get a filtered sound with the Big Muff and it sound great. Not quite the same as Siamese Dream like the Bi Phase but I think it’s generally more useful from a live perspective.

    Very interesting... Being a 3-stage phaser, the Bi-Phase will basically introduce three steep notches into the signal. From looking into the schematic, the notch frequencies are a factor of about 3.7 apart, so e.g. 106.4Hz - 397Hz - 1469 Hz, depending on the position of the expression pedal.
    I tried creating a similar notch effect with the parametric eq in my Helix with very promising results. Might play around with this a bit more to find the frequencies that are closest, though probably they might be different for different songs or even different guitar layers on the same song.

    Do you know if Corgan used a Bi Phase in his chain back then? This is fascinating! At the very beginning of your video I thought yeah a phaser would act like a filter, but you'd have to remain static somewhere in the sweep. Then you immediately said what I was thinking! haha I dodn't even know a phaser COULD remain static, because I hardly ever use one anyway! You got tremendous results, particularly with that incredibly janky thrown together rig with the $100 guitar. Amazing results and creativity while improvising with available tech, right on the spot!

      Thanks for watching. Corgan and Butch Vig used the BiPhase extensively on Siamese Dream. I doubt he ever tried to use it in a live situation but I would n argue it’s on more tracks than even the OpAmp Big Muff. One thing I only alluded to in the video is the clean tones. Even those sound more like Siamese Dream with the BiPhase engaged.

      A similar effect can be achieved using a Subdecay Prometheus DLX with the depth and the resonance controls set almost to zero and using the frequency control to pick your mid frequency.
      It has the advantage that it introduces a little bit of nearly imperceptible movement as the filter opens and closes making quite monolithic sounds a bit more dynamic.

      I have a pi phase and a current reissue bi-phase that mutron still makes for about $500, and compared them to my friend’s original vintage biphase for a few hours one night. They were identical sounding, but the pi and new bi are much smaller 😂 the old one is the size of a small mixing console, and the foot controller looks like it came off a tank! The new version has cv in as well. I love the biphase sound, so good!

    You're right! It sounds like a filter because phase shifting, by definition, is filtering, or more accurately a series of all-pass filters being modulated in unison, which is then blended with the dry signal and usually comes with some sort of audio feedback integration. Interestingly, a flanger is more or less the same thing, albeit with many more stages; sometimes as many as 24 filter stages with lots more feedback (which is responsible for the 'aircraft taking off' sort of sound).
    I've always loved the Bi-Phase because typical phasers like the MXR Phase 90/100 or Boss PH-2 have their phase modulated by an LFO, which is nice but the effect gets old quick imo. Having the ability to manually modulate the phaser's full frequency band is so powerful and useful for so many applications and instruments.

    Eddie, What octave pedal did Billy use on Siamese Dreams? a mutron octave + plus pedal. Did Billy tune to Eb standard or D standard because it sounds like Siamese Dreams is very layered guitars. You mention using a EHX Badstone turning OFF the LFO switch using the phaser as a filter sounds more "metallic" compared to the mutron Bi-phase? can you compared the EHX Badstone filter with the mutron Bi phase Filter in a video lesson because this is a major part of Siamese dream guitar tone.

    • @EddieClark
      @EddieClark  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. There were a couple octave effect pedals on SD. In the case of Rocket, it’s a Boss OC-2 while the Cherub Rock solo uses the Microsynth octave effect. Some songs were tuned to E standard, some were Eb, some were dropped D. He seemed to choose the tuning on a song by song basis. When I have a Bad Stone again, I will compare them but the ultimate is a BiPhase or clone if you want to get exact.

      I did end up buying a clone of the old Mistress with Filter Matrix and I really love it (an Elastic Mattress). It's a really great sound but it doesn't quite do it like a BiPhase. The BiPhase is infinitely more tweakable than the filter matrix mode of an EHX Pedal.

      I would keep the feedback low then track with other settings in various locations to get a full frequency sound when the tracks are combined. If your trying to use it live, you may want to look at an pedal that can allow for a “clean blend” so that the filtered sound can mix with a dry Big Muff sound.
