I’ve always loved Judy Collins! I’m 63 now and she is 80! Still going strong. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice. She’s a classy lady. I’m grateful for growing up in the 60s and 70s.
@@garyschneider8829 That is so wonderful Gary you were blest to have seen her sing in person. I’m d have loved that. She just truly has a beautiful voice and exudes class and charm. Have a wonderful day…week… month….life 😊🤗
This song definitely belongs to Judy Collins. No one else can sing this song like her. Every note is perfect and brings one to tears the way she emotes every word.
I definitely agree with you... Barbra sang this song beautifully, but Judy really own this song... her version was the standard for this song which was mostly some other singers used to sound too.. :)
Out of all songwriters, of any venue , Sondheim was best.Even Burt Neil, or Randy only listen.I don,' t even LIKE Broadway The Stones, or Brian Wilson, Orr Len-Mac ? No way.
When this song came out I was a long-haul trucker, going through a divorce. This song sung by Miss Collins always stirs many emotions. I was at a dinner in Philadelphia have dinner when it play on the jukebox....it was so fitting for what we were going through
In 1978-79, I took an art history course at my high school. My teacher showed us a wonderful slideshow of surrealist and impressionist art, and he played Judy Collins' version of this song in the background. That was over 40 years ago, and I have never forgotten it.
I was a senior in high school had a lot of issues going on with school and a girlfriend baby on the way even though it's been 42 years to listen to her sing brings back good memories
Richard Crocker I'm with you on this !!! It's a generation thing ! Would love to see younger Artist, bring back the old nostalgic songs for our Generation ! There's always hope 👍🏻
TheresaTV1 5 months ago Sondheim himself stated that the "clowns" actually are the vaudeville comedians that would be sent on stage when an act would flop. The lover of a theater actress is breaking up with her (her act is flopping, so to speak) so she's looking for the comedians to come on stage to rescue her from her painful scene. If you don't mind a more literal interpretation.
But if you take it in the context of the 'story', Glynis John's brings a different meaning to it, especially how she sings it. Of course, that's not to say this isn wonderful. It's meaning & feeling is different when approached in the way Glynis did. Still, for me, Glynis sings the definitive version. It hits you when it's sung within the musical.
Peter Martini-Yates 10 months ago I remember my mother buying this record for me because I had learned all the lyrics to it, for no other reason than that I liked it, I then played it incessantly, and still have it to this day.
Gorgeous. She sings the song simply without self-conscious facial expressions and embellishments, etcetera and just lets this beautiful song shine through. Barbara Cook is damned good too.
I heard Judy Collins and this song both for the first time in 1978 newly arrived to this country from distant shores. It moved me to tears. There is an honesty in her voice, that connects with your emotions. I liked the simplicity of her style, no artifice, and deep feeling. Her voice rings clear as a bell. The words resonated deeply with the difficulties I had adjusting to a new life. Hearing her again today, it is still the best recording of this song.
Whoa!Live is even more haunting than on LP, an all time classic, this lady's voice is phenomenal, raise a glass to awesome 70's music--may it live on forevermore...
The first I remember Judy Collins was when I heard an amazing voice singing an amazing song AMAZING GRACE.. They didnt need any thing but her voice . The chorus that joined in was great but all I heard was Judy Collins . That was a long time ago, I was a teenager. Now I know GOD 'S AMAZING GRACE. Praise the LORD. Thank you Judy Collins.
To say that this performance was amazing is truly an understatement. I've got chills running up and down my spine listening to this. It really is so rare that a vocalist like Ms Judy is born and discovered and has the power to stop a person in their tracks and cause them to weep at something so beautiful as this. I'm trying hard to find the words. I've written and deleted this post a hundred times already. Being able to listen to this lady's voice from 47 years ago and the power she put behind each note is a gift that I feel blessed to have been given from the Unverse. This performance is what hearing is all about. I know that just made me sound like a dork, cheeseball. When I hear Ms Judy sing, I see colors and flashes of soft light and sound that I am unable to describe. I think there are people who don't really know who they are as a human being until they take a breath and sing. And even then they still can not see the power and beauty the Universe has granted them. I can only imagine how this soul will sound one hundred incarnations from now.✨🌒🌕🌘✨
Her voice is such a gift from God. Met her back in 1984 - still looked so much younger and she was so gracious to all of us at the special university occasion. This song I think is my favorite and her version is the very best of so many attempts of it.
Indeed, thanks to Stephen for the songwriting and to Judy for rolling this cannonball into popular conciousness. Hers is the first and definitive effort to move a 'difficult' composer into our awareness. Thanks to both.
I've heard many other actress's sing this beautiful song.from Bernadette peters Catherine zeta-jones.and many others.but it was you Judy.who I first heard as a young girl. who captured my heart and soul.. no one can ever sing this beautiful classic song from a wonderful musical. like miss Collins... thank you...
Just discovered the wonderful JUDY COLLINS yesterday whilst typing in Laurel Canyon to find out where it was. Somehow that led me to finding a playlist with her version of Suzanne on it and I have been listening on repeat to all of her stuff since. I think people are capable of making great music again and I do believe that it will happen. Whatever happens I am a huge fan and going to make it my life goal to go to folk festivals when this is all over to hopefully here JUDY COLLINS live at some point and meet all the cool people that still love good music!!!
Judy’s rendition of this has continued to be the definitive version: pure, simple, understated but beautiful, with more than a hint of tears in her voice as she sings…
This song was on all the radio stations when I was a young man . I have to admit that it completely passed me by. . .. it’s wasn’t until I fell in love with someone who didn’t see me that I heard it and got it . Send in The clowns.

Agreed
I love Barbra Streisand's version too....😊

Will anyone write songs like this again ? Will anyone want to sing them ? Will there be people who love to hear them ?
+Richard Crocker Yes Richard, I love to hear them.
Yes. The problem is the records companies might not record them. Most people nowadays like trashy songs that have a lot of bad words.
Richard Crocker I'm with you on this !!!
It's a generation thing !
