In this episode of Coffee Break Sessions, I'm playing some of the records that I have been collecting over the last few months. During the lockdown, I've done quite a lot of online digging. As a result I've found some amazing records from the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania. Let me know if you guys enjoy this one. There's more to come!

Yugo music is really overlooked. There's good rock, good pop, good jazz, good funk and everything else under the sun. I guess because the country doesn't exist anymore it's not really looked at too often despite coming out around the same time as a lot of well remembered Western hits.

Yes indeed, great ear :O, and it actually inspired the greatest European organist Tihomir Pop Asanovic, who founded the band, to revive his career, made a new album, and helped us, mortals, to buy an official reissue of his noways very expensive solo albums. The record company was extremely surprised since it ended up being one of the bestsellers, hopefully, this will inspire more official reissues of 60's-70's-80's records. Check his work with Time (one of the greatest progressive rock acts in YU, also an official reissue out now) and his two extremely important solo albums. If I'm not wrong one of the producers behind Kendrick his records, sampled also something from his first solo album "Majko Zemljo"

Thanks for spreading love about music from Yugoslavia!!!
Yugoslavia followed world trends very closely throughout the decades and would then produce music in the genre popular at the time of extremely high quality. Not many are aware that in 60s in Yugoslavia, Mexican mariachi style music was also extremely popular, occupied airwaves for months and spurned number of homegrown artists. So pretty much every decade with every style of music, you can look at the output from Yugoslavia and hear amazing production, world class compositions, singers and musicians. I'm of course extremely biased being born there ('70) but thinking back it's somewhat mind boggling thinking about diversity and quality for a very small country, relatively.
Somewhat ironic is that even though there is so much good music, vast majority is based, like I said, on what's popular at the time. Then at the same time you have bands outside of the area who have gained a global following by playing a traditional music from Yugoslavia, a lot of it Serbian Gypsy brass, but nobody there who consider themselves modern and progressive would touch it. One notable exception is Srđan Jevđević and his Kultur Shock, but only now that he lives in the States. And that's my only criticism of the Yugoslav music, while it did have some unique ideas and bands, it was mostly following albeit doing a great job.
Which is another paradox, that what I now realize was original, we "cool kids" looked at as the redneck music. Look at Lepa Brena, you can say what you want and I thought back then that everything about her and her band was laughable, but it was original and everyone involved were world class musicians. And only recently I've learned that she was a megastar in the entire region, not just Yugoslavia.
For the bands that, to me, had something unique and original to offer (I'm sure I'll miss many who need to be mentioned that came before and after this period) look at, in no particular order, (just going through republics off of my memory and this is mostly 80s period)
    Indexi
    Zabranjeno pušenje
    Mizar

    EKV
    Disciplina kičme
    Haustor
    Vještice
    Azra
    Film (early albums)
    Lačni Franz
    Laibach
Thanks again for this effort, cheers!

I remember receiving albums, EPs, and 45s from a Polish friend when I lived in Germany and Switzerland. The other times, I remembered as a DXer [Shortwave Radio enthusiasit] receiving albums from Yugoslavia and other Eastern European countries. The music was excellent and I still have the LPs, EPs, and 45s
