Erica, you are the only fabric tutorial I have been able to watch all the way through. Most people infuriate me with excessive information in all directions, but you stayed focused and very straight forward. This is how I would have taught myself. LOL Thank You!
I've been sewing for 50 years, and I think a rug is about the only thing I haven't made. I'm definitely going to try this. This video was really informative and well done.
me too long time career in alterations/tailoring...etc... making quilts now... but today I saw this quilt and what they sell for... I got to make one now
gosh, I don't understand why there are over a thousand "thumbs down" for this wonderful tutorial. she was very detailed. easy to understand. made it look so easy!! I would LOVE to make one of these rugs …. because I watched this video. good grief, negative people!!!
I thought the same thing. I often think what sad, miserable lives these people must lead when they have nothing better to do than to put a negative comment or a thumbs down on a tutorial meant to help people do something or make something, especially as clear and well presented as this tutorial is. I doubt they even watched it- just going from video to video leaving a thumbs down. Wish UA-cam would crack down on people who leave too many negatives or at least limit the number you can leave in a given time to discourage these trolls, but I doubt that will happen. Makes me feel bad for the creators of such helpful content. Great tutorial! Looking forward to seeing more.
Unfortunately, people will always be negative when they don't get exactly what they want. I imagine instead of appreciating the wonderful tutorial we've been gifted, those people decided to be upset that she didn't provide details from a pattern that wasn't hers to share. Because they're children. Who want to act like brats.
Of all the sewing video’s on UA-cam, your channel is one of my favorites. Your quilts and projects are absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for the inspiration.
You are so right! I don't leave down thumbs but I'm pretty stubborn about video content. I hate presenters who haven't planned a presentation, ones who apologize for various failings, ones who drone on about their hubbies, kids, or pets (we are your students/clients, not your friends!), and ones who appear as if they just tumbled out of bed. I guess that eliminates a LOT of presenters but that's how we get the good ones. One day, I expect, we won't have every Tom, Dick, and Henrietta blathering on (badly). We will, hopefully, have the best, the professionals who teach, not everyone who wastes our time flipping through videos to learn what we wanted to learn in the first place. Btw, this young lady is a fine presenter. Thumbs down ppl must not like blondes. NO reasonable explanation otherwise!😏
I have a longarm business and end up with LOTS of leftover batting scraps (especially long strips). Now I know what to do with them! Great tutorial and I LOVE your sewing room.
It's a Saturday morning, I'm thumbing through UA-cam and I come upon this jelly roll tutorial. I don't do rugs but I'm drawn in by two things. The cabby chic look of the rug and the refreshing delivery of the instructors directions. She's quick, without losing us. The instructions are clear. The finished product makes me want to whip up a jelly roll rug right now. Thanks. Another project I shouldn't be doing but will love.
My mom is a quilter, and I always want her to teach me how to sew....anything!! This tutorial actually made me think I might be able to?? I LOVED this rug!!! Thank you for making it look so easy!!!
Nice tutorial, thank you. I appreciate you obtaining permission from someone else's pattern. So many bloggers don't have that kind of courtesy and it is very appreciated!
After seeing this tutorial a week ago, I was able to buy the roll of batting in a 50 yard package. I bought 2 of them, not realizing how much was on each roll until I got home. I also bought Roma's pattern. So I have enough for 2 rugs! YAY! I might make one for my sister. She doesn't sew and will be amazed when I tell her I made it. I also have 2 jelly rolls I bought on sale that I didn't need at the time. I'm so happy I bought them! I'm a new subscriber to your channel as of right now!
Thank you, this was a great video. I recently purchased the Sailrite Deluxe Fabricator industrial sewing machines to repair our houseboat canvases, do a new rear deck enclosure, and to make deck canvases here at our homestead/mini-farm. I heard about jelly roll rugs and thought they would be a great addition to our sustainable house remodel; my old art studio. David and I are both artisans, so everything in this house is 100% handmade. My new Sailrite machine will sew the jelly roll tubes with ease and accuracy. I'm going to experiment with it and attempt a bit of a twist; overlapping the strips and connecting them with a straight stitch, instead of a zigzag stitch. Fun abounds!
I remember my grandma used to make these for their home by hand, wish I learned more stuff from her while she was still alive. Great to see this tutorial on UA-cam
Same. I watched my grandma make rugs with cloth strips. I can’t really remember exactly how she did it but they were wonderful. Thick and laid flat. Nice to stand on.
I have been wanting to make a jelly roll rug for years but was afraid I would make mistakes and end up with a mess. Thank goodness for this young lady and her excellent job of explaining every step. I am thrilled to be sewing my first jelly roll rug! KUDOS young lady!!!!!
When she says pattern what does she mean. Cause I too was taught an a pattern in my head is somthing that's been around for years lol. I could be completely wrong
My grandma taught me many things, to sew, knit crochet bake by hand not in a mixer and to make the best flat cakes out of bread, miss her so much, she left me with so many happy memories, bless her 🙏🏼😢💕🌹💐
I just finished my first jelly roll rug. I didn't use a jelly roll and made it smaller than the pattern size. I used a different approach as I didn't know how much fabric I was going to use of each color. It was a learn and sew as you go. I love my rug...want to make two more. You have the best sewing/quilt channel. Thank you, Lynne
Excellent video! I took a class on this years ago and gave up, but your clear, detailed explanations have inspired me to start again and get a rug done! Thank you! You are an excellent presenter- focused, organized, giving options and explaining everything clearly! Also bravo to the camera work showing details!
More than a year ago I made one in Australia for my eldest daughter. And later in England for my second daughter. And than one in Germany for my wonderful neighbor. Now I'm busy in South Africa for myself. Thanks it's always fun 😍😉

I took a jelly roll rug class several years ago and made a lovely rug. But I've forgotten some of the techniques. This tutorial was just THE ticket! She helped me remember EVERYTHING from my class, including some of the things to watch out for. Will be making another one as soon as the weather keeps me from going outside during my second Covid winter. Looking forward to sewing again! 9/8/2020
Erica, I appreciate how you stayed on the subject matter...that helped me to focus on your instructions and not ‘break the spell,’ lol. Thanks so much!
I luuuve this tutorial! How refreshing that the instructor isn’t harping about keeping measurements to the 10th of an inch. Quilting should be fun, and her attitude keeps the student from being intimidated. That’s what seam rippers are for-doesn’t work? Tear it out and fix it. No fear! You are mistress of your project.
❤loved how precise and methodical the directions were, as well as the photography showing exactly how it’s done. I took a class to make a jelly roll blanket a couple of years ago and was overwhelmed by the steps that were counterintuitive to me like cutting on the diagonal, sewing all the strips together WITHOUT cutting between each one…and the repetitive- ness. I didn’t bother to make the blanket. This was very refreshingly done and making the whole process so much more manageable for me. It made sense…but now I need a rug. So I’m hung-ho again. Great job! Thanks 👏🏼
I am not at all sure why I was having a problem starting my rug. I thought I was confused, but apparently I had it right all along. Thank you for teaming up with Roma to do this tutorial. Can't wait to get started on my rug...turquoise, orange and black batiks to match the quilt I'm making for my son and daughter-in-law.
Great tutorial. My granddaughter is coming over to make this rug this evening and staying through Sunday afternoon. I’m glad I found this tutorial. Thank you so much for making it 👑
I was intimated by this beautiful project once I purchased my jelly roll. No more though. Thank you for your wonderful tutorial. I feel much more confident now about doing this and helping a group of young students make one too.
Just purchased Roma's pattern for her jelly roll rug. This is the first time I've done a project such as this. Erica, you did a wonderful job on your tutorial. Very easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much!
I am NOT a person who can sew. I keep buying sewing machines, thinking I'll do something, but they usually wind up at my daughters house or she sells them on line lol The way you have shown this I think honestly I can tackle this. Thank you!
Beautiful rug. My great aunt used to have them around her home. I loved them when I would visit her. This reminds me of a special part of my childhood. Thank you for sharing! 😘
I haven't seen in many years but this tutorial make me want to start again. I thought this was a great tutorial . Easy to follow and understand. Thanks
I am so happy I found your channel and I have been binge watching it like Netflix today. This video is helping me immensely with making my jelly roll rug. I am new to quilting and have been on the struggle bus with reading the pattern. I am more of a visual learner and this tutorial is a god send! Thank you!
So inspired! This might solve the 'what to do for my sister's birthday' problem. Thinking of table mats for her dining table in her new house. Desert colors. She has neighborhood ladies over often and likes to mix and match bright napkins and placemats. A couple bowl cozies made to fit her serving bowls. A round mat under the glass art piece in the center. She is IMPOSSIBLE to figure out a gift for. A couple yrs ago I gave her the "walking doll" she got as a child back to her with the clothes mother made for it. All 3 of my big sisters got one but the other two were younger and wore theirs out. I ended up with hers. I protected it so carefully for 6 decades. I had most of the clothes Mom made for the 3 dolls. One wore red, one green, the third blue. I even had her underwear. Her shoes were lost to time, tho. She sat in my late son's little rocking chair until her hair decided to unglue from her head. We couldn't get her little houndstooth beret (matched her cape) to cover the creepy dearth of hair. It was a hit as a surprise for my big sister!
Bet I can find a jelly roll of fabric in just the right colors, too. My brain is ready to run but it's 1:50 AM so I guess I'll just dream about it for a while.
No that's her sewining room. She said it in beginning. She also said she would share the info she could. If she gave every detail about pattern that was created by someone else. She made contact with them first and gave her limited permission. It's a rug not rocket science. The amazon bundle I do believe comes with pattern and 2 batting roll. I have jelly rolls and enough fabric to make my own.
Even so you can do what I have Done is take a bookshelf( billys IKEA) with seethrough Doors and have my fabrics on those shelves sorted by colours like 2-3 colours on each shelf like pink on the left red in the middle and orange/yellow on the right depending on how much you have. and then I have seasonal fabrics in one or two seethrough plastic bins. And on the bottomshelf I have smaller bins for the crumbs and they are also colour spesific like I have around 10 2-4 litre bins for my crumbs. Having everything sorted by colour and seasonal helps a lot. But if you have a lot of panels, charm packs or jellyrolls you might need a seperate display for that. Having everything in seethrough storage helps a lot for me to feel inspired and makes it easy to find what I need.
Mercy me, what a lot of work!!! It was enjoyable to watch, but won't ever be doing this. Like that she doesn't steal from others. So many UA-camrs just copy others.
great lesson, your sewing room is so pretty and your hair is gorgeous! I braided wool rugs about 35 years ago, dyed the wool also, never thought I'd be doing this again. Thanks for the inspiration. New subscriber!
I always liked those rugs in the 70's, but I wasn't crazy about the colors. Your rugs were really cute. This was inspirational, giving me some ideas for my next apartment.
Love your tutorial. Like someone said before, you stick to the subject, making it so much easier to follow directions. Tutorials are not the place for a family history, no matter how interesting. Thank you for this. I’m going to go cut some strips and experiment. ❤️
This is a great video. It is well presented, and clear on the details. I've never wanted to make a rug, in fact I've not particularly liked them, but this looks great. I am going to make one. Thank you for your tutorial.
Problem solved; Use a paper towel holder with a roll of paper towels on it. Wind you sewn strips around and around the paper towel, being careful not to twist. Use a laundry basket that has holes in the side to pass a rod through (like a broom handle, or mop handle) Pass the pole through the laundry basket, in one side and out of the other. This pole will hold your paper towel roll.
I am definitely going to make this. I have all the supplies especially to do this. She made it looks easy and gave good tips. I'm anxious to get started
I have watched this about a 1000 times. I am a beginner and am having a hard time with the pattern instructions, particularly going around the curve. Watching your video has really helped me! Thanks!
The rug is sooo pretty. What a great tutorial. Very clear on the directions and tips. I would love to make one of these rugs. You could make it pretty, or really country or scrappy. Limitless possibilities.
I used this tutorial to make my very first Jelly Roll Rug. I bought the jelly roll but had to cut the batting myself since I couldn't find any precut in the local stores. Mine didn't turn out perfect because I was just practicing the techniques she was showing in the video so I wasn't matcing up coloured threads or being as precise but it still turned out really well. I plan to make another one now that I know how and will be sure to match up threads and colours. Thanks for such a great tutorial!
I love sewing and this video facinated me. I started looking at prices for everything needed to make a rug like this. I live in South Africa and was shocked because buying only the basics for this rug will set me back more than R1000! Maybe the dislikes do not apply to the person doing the demonstration but rather the cost involved? In our country this will be labelled as an expensive project. Definitely not suitable for the person living on a pension... But I give this video a👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻for presentation and I am taking quite a few lessons that it taught me!
I LOVE them. Our Granny made them. There were no jelly roll packages then.. she used scraps. Come to think of it, she may have crocheted them 😁. Either way there were made…they’re cool rugs.
Hi! Couldn’t sleep tonight and stumbled across your channel and this video! Omgosh!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial and am so very inspired to make this beautiful, happy looking rug! Thank you very much for going to the trouble and the time to teach us how to sew this! Blessings to you and your awesome channel!!!
Great instruction and helpful tips too! When you mentioned about changing your needle for heavier fabric it may also be useful to loosen the presser foot tension so that it can feed through more easily. Thank you for sharing your experience -- the rug turned out awesome!
I just watched your tutorial on putting the jelly roll rug together and I'd just like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You explained everything step by step and took your time. Before watching this I thought I was going to have to throw all my hard work out. I had been trying to piece my rows together sewing by hand. I had four threaded needles hanging from the underside and I'd tack each row. No wonder my hands and fingers feel like they're going to fall off right now LOL. Again, many thanks.
This was absolutely mesmerizing I've always wanted to quilt I'm afraid to pick up a new craft since I have an addiction to crocheting and Yarn these are so beautiful I wouldn't want to stand on them
Oh wow, adorable Erica!!! Also love how you told us your sewing machine make and models as well as your table. And looooooove your sewing room!!! I have made the one you tie with scraps that was fun way back in the 1980s - I am putting this on my list just too cute! Thank you for sharing!!! 💗🎄💗
I finally got brave enough to try this and I’m so excited. I didn’t use the pattern, just your video and did the rest on the fly 😉 I used Moda’s One Fine Day and I cut my batting strips instead of using precut batting. I enjoy all your videos! I can’t post a pic or I would. Thanks again and please keep making these great videos!
Hi... Great tutorial. My mom sews handbag handles and she has told me rather than using denim needles she uses thick microtex needles, the sharper point apparently makes a huge difference.... just thought i'd let you know
Wonderful tutorial! While I was watching I thought to myself....Boy! Is this easier than the huge rag rug I am tying by hand! This will be my next project!
Erica....you are extremely good at explaining and demonstrating what to do and how to do it....I don't subscribe often but I'm subscribing to your channel...I look forward to watching more of your videos.....
If it's possible not to have to resort to the CC that's always preferable, since the auto-generated subtitles are often wrong and even if they're right, it's hard to learn from a video tutorial when you're forced to read the captions instead of watching the demonstrations.
Great tutorial and I purchased Roma’s pattern too! One big difference is that she sews her strips down the middle instead of 1/8” allowance. Makes the rug look really different 😂
Hello Ma'am, I am from India and love to see when you teach all the techniques of sewing with details. I like this video very much and am thankful for the possibilities you explained while teaching this project rug... Love and care...!!!
I loved watching you make this jelly roll rug mostly because I love B&C vintage picnic as I recently bought all the materials to make Summerville. I was waiting for the end so I could see the rug in all its vintage picnic glory, but that never happened :( The one you showed is lovely, but it would be nice if we could see the actual item you made. Love your videos. I am subscribed and watch you all the time.
I absolutely loved this tutorial. I was able to find reasonablely priced jelly roll bundles at Joann's and made a gorgeous rug just in time for Christmas! I absolutely love the nostalgia and the texture of this rug!
I love how organized your sewing room is. I have a sewing corner (2 bedroom apartment, but someday it’ll be a room!) and I keep it neat and tidy as well. I don’t think I’d get all my projects done if it wasn’t organized 😂 great tutorial! Thank you!
I just made one jelly roll rug for my sewing room. It was a really fun project. I love the look of vintage picnic made up. I may need to make another one in vintage picnic material. I just love the pop of red in the rug.
Your video is very good. I did a jelly roll rug and love the way it turned out. My jelly roll rug was from Maywood Studio and the colour was BOUNTIFUL.
Thank you so much for showing us how to make a jelly roll rug. I love the little quilt on the wall behind you, with the darling cow and goat. So cute!🌻
What happened to the darker blue fabric in your tutorial? Your finished rug looks different. Just wondering. But man!! What hope this project bring me!! As a long ago quilter who has carried all my fabrics, supplies, and batting with me every time I move, I think I’ve found the perfect project to use up a lot of fabrics and also one that will be easy on my pain issues that keep me from doing so much of what I love. Thank you!😁
Hi! Is there any chance that you remember the name of the jellyroll used to make the rug that you are holding up? The pastels are so pretty together. Thanks for the tutorial, I cant wait to make one! p.s. your hair is amazing!
That is a really lovely rug and I'm going to have to make several. I think it would also make some really nifty placemats. And if it curls up it could be a bowl and that would be fun too.

I am jealous of your sewing room. My stuff is in bins in a closet, always a chore to find what I need.
Fairly certain she was in a fabric/craft store where this was taped. What's behind her in bins is probably part of the store's fabric inventory.
This is what's called a pattern...that is able to be purchased to be used and then you can show your shortcuts. .which she did.
great lesson, your sewing room is so pretty and your hair is gorgeous!
Beautiful..my Grandma used to make rugs out of rags and my Mother in law made them out of plastic bread wrappers.
Same here! At first I was like nope, thats not my style and now I am sitting here with my supplies getting ready to sew this rug. ❤
I need to say your English speaking is so simply i love it I don't need translate to understand it! Kisses from Argentina 💋
This is a wonderful tutorial. I’m a “must see it done “ type of person. This helped me so much! Thank you.
This is awesome! I’m so glad I found this, I’ll be moving into a new apartment in a few weeks, and this will be a real brightened!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It gave me the confidence to do this project. I'm so happy with how it turned out and can't wait to do another!
I LOVE them. Our Granny made them. There were no jelly roll packages then.. she used scraps. Come to think of it, she may have crocheted them 😁. Either way there were made…they’re cool rugs.
You can definitely use scraps!
You can get a good iron at a thrift store I was suprised at how much an iron was. I got one for less than $5.00 for crafting only at the thrift store
Wonderful tutorial for those who know how to sew! I am soon to be a grandma and this is working wonders for me:) Thank you again!
Great tip!
Love the rug and video. You are an awesome teacher and explain things so they are easy to understand!
Again, many thanks.
this is gorgeous. I need to make me and my mom one
This was absolutely mesmerizing I've always wanted to quilt I'm afraid to pick up a new craft since I have an addiction to crocheting and Yarn these are so beautiful I wouldn't want to stand on them
That’s beautiful. I don’t know if I’d want folks stepping all over it. ❤️😊
Laura Llama, it would definitely have to go in the guest room. Lol
I'd probably beat'em half ta deff if they stepped on it, all that cutting and sewing yeah that goes in guest room with no guest 🙄😲😬😳
Agreed! I’d hang this art piece on the wall. ❤️🥰
Laura Llama definitely a no shoes rule! 😋
What great instructions. I have purchased 2, one fir each grandchildren! Thank you.
Thank you so much, that was super clear and I can't wait to get started! I love the color pattern of your rug!
Beautiful...my grandmother used to make rugs like this by hand. Great instructions.
Hi... Great tutorial. My mom sews handbag handles and she has told me rather than using denim needles she uses thick microtex needles, the sharper point apparently makes a huge difference.... just thought i'd let you know
Thanks for the tip!

Огромное спасибо! Теперь сделаю для внучки такой же коврик!!! Примите благодарность за идею и мастер-класс! Творческих успехов!
I've been wanting to make one of these for such a long time, thank you for sharing!!!
Wonderful tutorial! While I was watching I thought to myself....Boy! Is this easier than the huge rag rug I am tying by hand! This will be my next project!
I had no idea what a jelly roll rug is and all of a sudden, I want to make one 😀 thank you for the great tutorial ❤️❤️
Eszter same here!
I think I might be brave enough to try this!! It is so cute and your directions are so doable and clear!! Thank you!

Erica....you are extremely good at explaining and demonstrating what to do and how to do it....I don't subscribe often but I'm subscribing to your channel...I look forward to watching more of your videos.....
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video, Erica. Much love from Trinidad! 🇹🇹
You need a patience of a saint to do a project like this.
LOL!
I love your demo and info. The music competes with you. For us with hearing impairments it was over the top.
Sorry, I"ll try to keep the music lower next time :)
Use the CC.
If it's possible not to have to resort to the CC that's always preferable, since the auto-generated subtitles are often wrong and even if they're right, it's hard to learn from a video tutorial when you're forced to read the captions instead of watching the demonstrations.
The incessant typing was annoying too.
Why such repetitious music. To me that is more annoying than the volume of it. Sorry, other than that, I enjoyed it, but I can't watch again.
Great tutorial and I purchased Roma’s pattern too! One big difference is that she sews her strips down the middle instead of 1/8” allowance. Makes the rug look really different 😂
I love Vintage Picnic! ❤️
Sorry! There are finished pics on my blog post linked in the description box :)
I keep coming back to this video, time after time. So helpful. Thank you.
Очень красиво!!! Умница,красавица и рукодельница!!!💕💐
Jerrys Jellyroll Jig is a LIFESAVER for this rug!~~!
Thanks so much from Edmonton Alberta Canada! Love your easy to follow tutorial, so looking forward to making these rugs for my new Garden Suite!
I absolutely loved this tutorial. I was able to find reasonablely priced jelly roll bundles at Joann's and made a gorgeous rug just in time for Christmas! I absolutely love the nostalgia and the texture of this rug!
Хоть я и не знаю английского,но было всё понятно.Красивый коврик получился.👍🏼
I love how organized your sewing room is. I have a sewing corner (2 bedroom apartment, but someday it’ll be a room!) and I keep it neat and tidy as well. I don’t think I’d get all my projects done if it wasn’t organized 😂 great tutorial! Thank you!
I just made one jelly roll rug for my sewing room. It was a really fun project. I love the look of vintage picnic made up. I may need to make another one in vintage picnic material. I just love the pop of red in the rug.
What is vintage picnic material and where do I get it?
Your video is very good. I did a jelly roll rug and love the way it turned out. My jelly roll rug was from Maywood Studio and the colour was BOUNTIFUL.
This is perfect for my cat to lay on , when he watches me sew in my sewing room. He usually lays on the fabrics 🙄 will try it with my scraps.
Currently in the mist of this project. It is a time consuming process, im enjoying this project. ❤
I remember these being made in the 70’s XD
Thank you so much for the GREAT tutorial! Maybe this 72 year old will give it a shot. BEAUTIFUL colors too.😊 👍
Made my first one. Couple of things for my next one, iron frequently, wind six or seven bobbins, make sure to have a couple spools of your thread.m
My neighbor made rag rugs in the 60s. Looked just like this. Everything old is new again.
Isn't that the truth!
Where can I find the farm quilt hanging on the wall behind you? LOVE IT! Thank you for the tutorial and tips for this project. Very helpful.
Thank you so much for showing us how to make a jelly roll rug. I love the little quilt on the wall behind you, with the darling cow and goat. So cute!🌻
How do I take the curling of rug out, once it's already sewn sorry to say.
I've Ironed it several times as I moistened and ironed it.
Thank you!😁
The navy blue is on the outside edges as you can see from the image. The first rug I show is using NEST fabric by Lellaboutique.
She is easy to listen to and gives great tips and references to products and makers
Hi! Is there any chance that you remember the name of the jellyroll used to make the rug that you are holding up? The pastels are so pretty together. Thanks for the tutorial, I cant wait to make one! p.s. your hair is amazing!
The one I make in the video is Vintage Picnic by Bonnie and Camille, the one I hold up at the start is Nest by Lella Boutique
@@erica_arndt Thank you for replying Erica, I appreciate it!
That is a really lovely rug and I'm going to have to make several. I think it would also make some really nifty placemats. And if it curls up it could be a bowl and that would be fun too.
Annette McIntyre , I thought the same thing!! Great idea for place mats
