Dave Friedman’s unrivaled tube-tone prowess made him the go-to guarantor for superlative sonics, with the likes of Eddie Van Halen and Jerry Cantrell among the Rolodex of riff masters who sought Friedman’s craftsmanship to supercharge their sounds. His namesake company serves guitarists of all creeds across a voltaic array of tube-powered performance, and the PLEX is the latest amp to tap into Friedman’s near-academic amplifier expertise. With EL34 and 12AX7 tubes powering its formidable 50-watt output, the PLEX represents Friedman’s efforts to capture the aural essence of his prized 1968 British tube head. Does the PLEX measure up to the vintage panache of Dave’s number one? Sweetwater put their exarch of overdrive, Nick Bowcott, and purveyor of panache, Don Carr, on the case to find the answer, chatting with Dave Friedman himself to unravel the story of how the PLEX came to be. Check it out!

Dave Friedman creates tone better than anything else on this planet. He has heart, soul, skill and genius
He surely has soul, skills and Genius. Not the heart. Sorry to say this because the amp's quality is awesome: more than 3k for a modded Plexi are excessive. For 15k or 17k less you can get a true Plexi.
@@paolomaestri2179I've built a few plexi clones, and in Dave's defense I will say that quality parts are expensive. By the time you add up the cost of transformers, cabinet, tubes, and other electronics, you could be into the project for $1,500 before any assembly, and there is a lot of work. There are budget amps for people on a budget, but there will be sacrifices in build quality.
i Raise you a Dumble
I finally sprung for a Friedman JJ Jr last year and absolutely love it. I will definitely consider Friedman when shopping in the future!
This is THE sound
I love the way Dave's mind works. He carries forward the very best elements of a classic design, and then adds all the things that he's needed to adjust over the years based on the necessity of building amps for touring professionals. This thing looks so cool, it does everything a plexi does, with a whole bunch of new tricks as well.
They're amps are pricey but worth it!!! Everything they put out shines. And they got stuff for every budget. If your serious about tone and want to be heard in a band mix. Buy a Friedman,i don't care what no one says. I've been playing since 1987. Nothing beats a cranked tube amp in the room!!!. Friedman should now put out a power attenuator. Something to soak power to let you get cranked sound at lower lvl. That would be amazing
I'd be cranking it to 10 and jamming out every classic Van Halen riff I can think of!
I bought my 1972 JMP 50w for $78.00 in 1987 it's kind of a long story but I got it !
Nick, that Kossoff tone really couldn't be any closer. Good choice!
This is the kind of amp I'd love to hear a Hot Mod V2 EVO on. Most of these plexi-style amps have plenty of gain for us classic rockers who grew up learning/loving the players from the 70's & 80's. We just need it not only tightened up, but with added punch, which to this day is the hardest tone quality to modify (via pedals anyway). Looks like a very cool amp...
Sweetwater demos are the best!
Heh, I recently ordered a Splawn Quick Rod 50. I wish I could buy this Friedman too, but I don't expect to be disappointed. Rock on.
I have a quickrod 100, newer version with old new and drop B switches. I also own a Friedman BE 100 Deluxe. I prefer the Quickrod for its rawness and punch. The BE 100Dlx although a great amp, is too polite for my style of music.
Why is this thing so EXTREMLY expensive in Europe, not affordable.
I'll be waiting for the AC style amp.
I see Don AND Nick, I hit play.
Well, now, I like it!
Nick, throw down some Grim Reaper riffs please!
I may be wrong, but I think the PPI MV design was George Metropolis’ concept? Maybe he also had something to do with FX loop Dave designs? I forget…. There was this guy I knew from the Valley that modded Marshall’s….Mike Morin….He was pretty good also. Dave nailed it. I like my Small Box, but this is even more tone-a-riffic! Killer amp man!!
The best pairing in this case is a Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander
Hard to beat a Friedman amp. 🎈
I mean it's a plexi basically. It's the literal sound of a Marshall Plexi which is what it was modeled after. Granted Dave made some improvements. I'll stick with my JCM800 2203
I was expecting it to be like $4k. It's not cheap but it seems reasonable.
Marshall recently lowered their prices (as a lot of companies are doing now that the pandemic buying spree is over). A 1987x is now $1,900. So, Dave is facing the reality of having to compete with that.
@@hootowl6354 It does have a master volume on the front though. MVC is a PPIMV. I don't really consider an attenuator being necessarily part of the cost since no one is forcing bedroom or low volume players to buy this thing. If you don't play loud why are you buying such an amp? It's your own fault for "needing" an attenuator at that point. Obviously it's a very expensive amp but it's a luxury nonessential product so it's like, yea water is wet.
@@hootowl6354 the amp has a post phase master. it works pretty well and helps tame the amp to reasonable volume levels for home use. I looked at the Marshall and even at $1900 the build quality is not the same as the PLEX. SW delivered my PLEX 5/6/24... it's an exceptional amp. As with any 50W Tube Amp an attenuator is recommended to get the most out of it unless your playing large venues.
@@pCeLobster Oh, my bad. I'll delete my post.
Oh my god I’ve never heard anything like it!!!! Oh, wait…
I’m ok with not having the loop but I feel a line out (cab sim or not) is missing.
José Arredondo inspired master volume. Eddie Van Halen first amp tech.
Costs more than my car, but I can say that it rips man.
I may be getting one. I like what I hear
I need just 1 company to make quality tubes like they used to...
Anyone?
What new products are tubes used for these days? Guitar amps. That's all, as far as I know. Not much of a market.
@@hootowl6354 I know.. I need a hero. I'm crying out for a hero with a tube that is right. Tube's gotta be strong, and it's gotta be fast, 'cause we've gotta equip it tonight.
Does this amp take pedals decently?
Hi, silvel2edge. Yes and no. Plexi amps were used by plenty of guitarists who are known for effects usage (Hendrix, Andy Summers, etc) so they will take drive pedals and modulation with no problem. If you’re running the amp overdriven, things like delay and reverb could get pretty washy and difficult to use. There’s no effects loop so everything has to go through the front end.
Thanks for your interest!

Man ive already seen a bunch of demos, and nobody is boosting it yet. BUST OUT THE TUBE SCREAMERS PEOPLE, ITS MADE FOR EM. \m/\m/
Yeah. If you really want to sound like a professional then you got to drop a little money. You get a lot for your dollars with these guys and you'll be glad you did. I don't need 100W anymore but believe me that 20Watt is loud af😮😂 when you do want to turn up😊
Dude, you couldn’t be more wrong. There is no “sound like a professional”. A skillful guitarist can make just about any amp sound good, while a mediocre guitarist will make a Friedman amp sound mediocre.
@@SpaceJockey805
I don't agree with that. I am a mediocre player but sound awesome with better equipment and certain effects.
costs 3.5 times more than the Sv20 in Europe though
Any Friedman is essentially gonna cost more than the sv20. That’s like comparing apples to oranges
So this is really a 6 x12 cab .....?......@24:56 "4 Celestion greenbacks and 2 vintage 30s" .
I came here to see the adults play.
Regular old plexi is better.
Terrible "Alright Now" copy and etc.,, etc. lol !!! Really.....
Yea I’m not a fan of nicks playing. Very sloppy
