Somalia was actually a strong, developing economy before the 1960s. They had a communist coup and then their economy collapsed. That's where you get modern Somalia from.

I could write all day on the type of guy he is. But I'll just say if there is a better dude on earth, I haven't met him yet.
It's not so much a matter of finding a "better" guy, it's that Delta has a VERY high level of excellence, and you'll find a number of great leaders, outstanding marksmen, and SUPERB operators in that unit. Units like Delta, The "Activity", and other units operating at that level, have made it their mission to cultivate and refine leadership to not only an art form, but an operational asset that they can rely on when operating, and when coordinating with friendly units.

Remember when this movie came out. My dad couldn’t watch it in theaters worried he have flashbacks. We watched it as a family with my dad pointing out stuff. He would always joke running the Mogadishu mile he was behind Jerry kids as he was so slow. Proud of my dad for his service in such a now well known event.

I was a Sapper in the 10th MTN Div at the time, I had just returned from Somalia a month before this mission went down. 20 of my friends were part of the QRF during this time. One of my fellow Sappers was killed, well died from wounds on OCT 8th and several others were wounded during the “ Rescue Mission. TF-2-14 took quite a few casualties going in to get the Rangers and Delta guy out. TF-1-32 conducted numerous raid missions in and around Mogadishu, as well as cordon and search missions in the months prior we were keeping the Somali’s on the run we went after Aidid on several occasions, we also rescued members of the Pakistani army who were killed and wounded while inspecting the spaghetti factory. We conducted our last mission the last week of August and were relived by TF-2-14.

I can't remember where I saw this other video, but it was a group of interviews of the soldiers who were tasked with rescuing these guys.... it was eye-opening and even more intense than the movie recounted.
My mentor for my new job at the corporation in 1999 was the radio operator on the command and control bird, not pictured in the movie nor mentioned in the book. A 31C from the Night Stalkers, we meshed perfectly working on the end user factors for the 117F radio. He never spoke about anything from this mission. He lived their motto and quality was foremost. He invented taking college boy engineers out to Ranger and SOF units so they can meet and understand the users. In maybe 2000/2001, i was reading the book and realise back at the BN I retired from, I had met one of the Delta guys while fixing a printer in S3 as I asked him where he was from as most of the time, you know everyone and he says he just left Delta and I left it at that.
My buddy Rob who was a retiring MSG. When I was a PFC, had been a brand new army truck driver and was involved in this battle. He gave me a magazine he’d used in the battle, which was in my rifle when I crossed into Iraq the first time. During my army career, I met four people involved in this, two of whom were prominently featured in the movie. My basic training chaplain was CPT. Jeff Streucker, who had been an E-5 during the battle. And of course Mike Durant who makes the rounds and speaks at aviation units throughout the army. Sadly Rob lost his battle with his demons in 2022.
I played for about 2min. of your book, All Secure. I highly recommend it by the way. I didn't tell her what she was about to hear just if it sounded familiar. So I played it and she said, gee I wonder, only every time we go out together to a sit-down restaurant. Lol, thank you Sir for your service.

One of my good friends, SSG Ron Richerson was one of the Army MP's killed by the anti-tank mine. I was a Navy 9545/815A at that time, stationed In the same theater.
I'm sorry for your loss. I was there and part of the recovery team that went out to bring back the hummv. They were the last vic in the patrol. The four were from two MP companies, two guys rotating out and two from the new unit. Hardwired command det IED One of the first to be used against us forces in country. I feel your loss my friend.

There were very few ways to move through the city and market places, your friend was doing his job, he was doing what we thought was helping the people of that country live without fear of being killed just for going about your day. Lots of really good people paid the price for us to be here today, I carry the memories of them to remind me that I owe them for what they did and not to waste their sacrifice. Your friend did not die in vain or alone and he will be remembered.

I was maybe 20 years old when I first read Black Hawk Down, it was the first book that I ever read from cover to cover in one day. I had always been a fan of the Civil War and World War 2 and somewhat of Vietnam, but hell I had no idea that something like Mogadishu could ever happen in the near present day. 9-11 happened maybe just a year after reading the book, and now we have all kinds of military books to choose from. This was a GREAT interview btw! Glad it showed up in my feed. This incident is one that I hope we never forget, and just having this little interview about it gives it some much needed light. What a story - his autobiography is a stellar read. Whoever made the decision on Black Hawk Down not to take additional water and NOD's sadly has his moment in history for all the wrong reasons.
The decisions about not providing Bradley’s and ac-130s took heat for getting everyone stuck in something they couldn’t break out from. They shouldn’t have needed the water because no one should have planned on them getting pinned down and overrun for hours. That would be a stupid thing to include as part of any plan. It was stupid that the plan failed to prevent it. Nobody banned them from taking water and night vision though. It was 3 in the afternoon and they were doing something that should have had them back in an hour. Why would they go in expecting things to go wrong and get them stranded? If you expect that then you probably try to stop the whole thing, not just pack more water so you don’t be thirsty while getting shot up by vast enemy forces.
Charlie Beckwith's guys were asked to deliver a message to a bad actor on my behalf once, and handled the situation quickly and permanently. Delta guys don't mess around. They have my undying respect. Hats off to them.

I was in basic training during this, and we all watched it on the news...and shit became real. real fast...and undermining the President was a 5 times-a-day violent reaction from E-4 to 0-7.
Great interview. I EASd out of the Corps in 1992 (was 0311). I caught all the Mog shit on tv in 93 and I remember that I kept telling my dad and brothers "I'm fuckin glad I got out before this shit show." I couldn't, and still can't, understand the castration of our troops after being sent out to complete missions/operations.

It tore me up seeing the working dogs that were left behind (I'm a contract K9 handler now), like I literally cried for days. A big part of my humanity (what I had left after the military and law enforcement) died then.

A great and very interesting podcast, but most people in the world are not jealous of life in American, they just don't want that life style imposed on them for many reasons.
I was standing in the cafeteria of a tech school when the footage came across the tv of a pilot who was stripped and being drug thru the streets. The cowardice of the Clinton administration was on full display that week and it made me ashamed of America for abandoning its warriors. Which, unfortunately, wasnt the last time I felt that way. Somalia seemed to set a precedent on sending troops into harms way then putting handcuffs on them, all that "rules of engagement" bullshit. Send a man to fight then let him fight, and if you have to fight dirty to match the enemy then so be it, War with rules is a fools errand. I tip my hat to all the operators and veterans no matter how small your role might have been, I was peacetime Army of the 80s and didnt do much besides drink beer and chase skirts.
As a Somali it’s actually crazy Americans believe getting involved in a civil war that was literally none of there business is logical. Expecting a warm welcome in a active combat zone with armed anger, hungry and uneducated people is a good idea. Remember the leaders were locals who didn’t leave during the civil war, most educated and capable people left. It’s fucked up how much American politicians send their people to this lose/lose situations, imagine a team death match with a new team inserted trying to “stabilize” the war lol….wonder what could do wrong. As much as it might sound fucked up, this solider is only trained to fight, he was completely deceived on the actual climate he was up against. Most of those Somalis are secular, religion is a go to for westerners trying understand there poor assessment of foreign countries political climates, they don’t care to die because they fucked up there own country up so bad last thing they wanted is random country imposing new law. Im actually sadden they would send brave guys like this solider. That conflict actually continued to destabilize the country and did way more damage then good. They should of held there position, not engaged in trying to kidnap people from such a dumb reason. Wait for them to cool down, and then support one side. Another side note about war crimes…..every single armed group with a quick google search will show war crimes. In this actually battle hundreds of civilians were dead, and many Somali’s claim of war crimes against the US. But I guess those claims never matter. And btw “in his lifetime” Somali was actually stable. But CIA decided to support the anti communist regime, destabilize the region. Must be nice to have zero accountability, US and Ethiopians created Aidid and then started complaining about him. Wait that sounds so familiar didnt they do that in Afghanistan with the Taliban? So the brave soldiers closing statements need more context.
I can't even imagine what it would be like to drive down those narrow streets, in the old paper-thin Hummers, with people all over the rooftops shooting down. Dropping any kind of grenade, or hell cinder blocks could do real damage. By " way under fire" I cant grasp how many people just blindly shooting at all of them. That had to be like hell on earth. Then come back pack up and run back out for more. Those countries like that are so insane to see. Somehow people get so spoiled here that they think they can make a difference. Been cursed to fight since the beginning and won't stop until the end.

Was in AIT when Somalia happened. I wanted payback so bad. When the guy got dragged down the streets. My platoon started to push kick down the wall lockers. We had to be ordered to stop. My first unit was at Benning. I worked at the ASP. I worked weekly with Rangers. Phipps and Floyd. They never would talk about Somalia. I had to read the book about Somalia when it came out. It haunted me for years I could not see combat. I was asked after 9/11 to rejoin. I was 26. I knew my history. I knew the Russians lost. I told the recruiter. Why would we do any better then the Russians? I developed ptsd from not seeing combat and the better treatment of 9/11 vets. When the fall of Afghanistan happened. My ptsd was cured. I was right we would loose.

There used to be pics of him online about 15 years ago, sighting an AR-15 in an apartment overseas somewhere, but I think the government took them down because he was still doing contract work at that time. With all due respect: you're very wrong: it's not envy at all. Those people - and some of us on this side of the world - have a life that is not based on consuming, throwing away and consuming some more. They have strict values - mainly from religion - that set them on the way that they will live, instead of having their ways dictated by the way others live. They just don't want what our countries have to offer, and the fact that a certain coalition of countries tries to force that offer on them makes them naturally resist. It's tradition.
It's their ideology giving wings to their sadism and xenophobia. They don't have any right to treat their own people like cattle, no matter what their religion has to say.

They had no AC-130s or any, other air support. 2.) They didn’t “lose”. They killed hundreds of Somalis, while 18 Americans were killed. What actually did happen is that they wanted to go back in and finish the mission, but Clinton pulled them out of Somalia because he looked foolish. If you’re gonna have an opinion, it’s probably be in your best interest to at least have some sort of idea as to the facts…

Apparantly you missed OIF and OEF. I served in Somalia as well as the war on terror. All served with 3rd Batt, 1st Batt and finally RRC all days sucked and they're were definitely days worse than the 3rd and 4th of October. The one large offensive where they tried to take on the US military (google TET offensive) left them so crippled and damaged they never engaged in another offensive operation until the US left the country 5 years later. I read a book written by a North Vietnamese General who said they seriously considered surrendering after Tet. You can defeat the US politically but you definitely can't defeat them militarily unless the politicians restrict the military. Those two things are not the same. The US military is vastly under estimated because so many simpletons think Afghanistan or Vietnam was a military loss. We won every battle in both places for as long as the politicians had the will to keep the military in place. Our military can lay waste to any military on the planet. It's not even remotely close. EVERY war is fought on someone else's home turf and we still pound them. No one even suggests for an instant the US is going to get invaded or the Chinese are going to invade A US ally in another part of the world. We would crush them before they landed a single shipload of troops. 90 miles of water and Taiwan is still free. China can drive to Tibet they got run over 60 years ago. Both were seen as rogue provinces of China the only difference is that water. You think China could invade Alaska? Brazil? Panama? No one even talks about something like that because it's beyond the realm of reality.

Lots of really good people paid the price for us to be here today, I carry the memories of them to remind me that I owe them for what they did and not to waste their sacrifice.

I was maybe 20 years old when I first read Black Hawk Down, it was the first book that I ever read from cover to cover in one day. I had always been a fan of the Civil War and World War 2 and somewhat of Vietnam, but hell I had no idea that something like Mogadishu could ever happen in the near present day. 9-11 happened maybe just a year after reading the book, and now we have all kinds of military books to choose from.
This was a GREAT interview btw! Glad it showed up in my feed. This incident is one that I hope we never forget, and just having this little interview about it gives it some much needed light. I''ll be watching the full interview soon enough.

What a story - his autobiography is a stellar read. Whoever made the decision on Black Hawk Down not to take additional water and NOD's sadly has his moment in history for all the wrong reasons.
The decisions about not providing Bradley’s and ac-130s took heat for getting everyone stuck in something they couldn’t break out from. They shouldn’t have needed the water because no one should have planned on them getting pinned down and overrun for hours. That would be a stupid thing to include as part of any plan. It was stupid that the plan failed to prevent it. Nobody banned them from taking water and night vision though. It was 3 in the afternoon and they were doing something that should have had them back in an hour. Why would they go in expecting things to go wrong and get them stranded? If you expect that then you probably try to stop the whole thing, not just pack more water so you don’t be thirsty while getting shot up by vast enemy forces.

Great interview. I EASd out of the Corps in 1992 (was 0311). I caught all the Mog shit on tv in 93 and I remember that I kept telling my dad and brothers "I'm fuckin glad I got out before this shit show." I couldn't, and still can't, understand the castration of our troops after being sent out to complete missions/operations.

@@FormerActionGuys I can't imagine what that was like for AFG veterans, and specifically the guys on the ground. It tore me up seeing the working dogs that were left behind (I'm a contract K9 handler now), like I literally cried for days. A big part of my humanity (what I had left after the military and law enforcement) died then.
But you know they can't be unleashed completely unless it's an all-out war. I agree it sucks but there's no totally avoiding rules of engagement.

I was standing in the cafeteria of a tech school when the footage came across the tv of a pilot who was stripped and being drug thru the streets. The cowardice of the Clinton administration was on full display that week and it made me ashamed of America for abandoning its warriors. Which, unfortunately, wasnt the last time I felt that way.
Somalia seemed to set a precedent on sending troops into harms way then putting handcuffs on them, all that "rules of engagement" bullshit. Send a man to fight then let him fight, and if you have to fight dirty to match the enemy then so be it, War with rules is a fools errand. I tip my hat to all the operators and veterans no matter how small your role might have been, I was peacetime Army of the 80s and didnt do much besides drink beer and chase skirts.
The goverment saw Somalia as good chance to get some live fire training done. Same with panama and grenada. Testing out new equipment and training.
As a Somali it’s actually crazy Americans believe getting involved in a civil war that was literally none of there business is logical. Expecting a warm welcome in a active combat zone with armed anger, hungry and uneducated people is a good idea. Remember the leaders were locals who didn’t leave during the civil war, most educated and capable people left. It’s fucked up how much American politicians send their people to this lose/lose situations, imagine a team death match with a new team inserted trying to “stabilize” the war lol….wonder what could do wrong. As much as it might sound fucked up, this solider is only trained to fight, he was completely deceived on the actual climate he was up against. Most of those Somalis are secular, religion is a go to for westerners trying understand there poor assessment of foreign countries political climates, they don’t care to die because they fucked up there own country up so bad last thing they wanted is random country imposing new law.
Im actually sadden they would send brave guys like this solider. That conflict actually continued to destabilize the country and did way more damage then good. They should of held there position, not engaged in trying to kidnap people from such a dumb reason. Wait for them to cool down, and then support one side.
Another side note about war crimes…..every single armed group with a quick google search will show war crimes. In this actually battle hundreds of civilians were dead, and many Somali’s claim of war crimes against the US. But I guess those claims never matter.
And btw “in his lifetime” Somali was actually stable. But CIA decided to support the anti communist regime, destabilize the region. Must be nice to have zero accountability, US and Ethiopians created Aidid and then started complaining about him. Wait that sounds so familiar didnt they do that in Afghanistan with the Taliban?
So the brave soldiers closing statements need more context.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to drive down those narrow streets, in the old paper-thin Hummers, with people all over the rooftops shooting down. Dropping any kind of grenade, or hell cinder blocks could do real damage. By " way under fire" I cant grasp how many people just blindly shooting at all of them. That had to be like hell on earth. Then come back pack up and run back out for more. Those countries like that are so insane to see. Somehow people get so spoiled here that they think they can make a difference. Been cursed to fight since the beginning and won't stop until the end.

Was in AIT when Somalia happened. I wanted payback so bad. When the guy got dragged down the streets. My platoon started to push kick down the wall lockers. We had to be ordered to stop. My first unit was at Benning. I worked at the ASP. I worked weekly with Rangers. Phipps and Floyd. They never would talk about Somalia. I had to read the book about Somalia when it came out. It haunted me for years I could not see combat. I was asked after 9/11 to rejoin. I was 26. I knew my history. I knew the Russians lost. I told the recruiter. Why would we do any better then the Russians? I developed ptsd from not seeing combat and the better treatment of 9/11 vets. When the fall of Afghanistan happened. My ptsd was cured. I was right we would loose.

1.) They didn’t have air support. That was denied to them by Clinton. They had a few very small helicopters known as “Little Birds”. They had no AC-130s or any, other air support.
2.) They didn’t “lose”. They killed hundreds of Somalis, while 18 Americans were killed. What actually did happen is that they wanted to go back in and finish the mission, but Clinton pulled them out of Somalia because he looked foolish.
If you’re gonna have an opinion, it’s probably be in your best interest to at least have some sort of idea as to the facts…

Our military is over confident. We have not faced a fierce adversary since Vietnam.
20+ years of war fighting experience since 9/11 shouldn't be underestimated. Yes, improvements can be made, but what other military has a similar amount of real-world experience?
Apparantly you missed OIF and OEF. I served in Somalia as well as the war on terror. All served with 3rd Batt, 1st Batt and finally RRC all days sucked and they're were definitely days worse than the 3rd and 4th of October. They literally never took or held a single objective in the entire war. The one large offensive where they tried to take on the US military (google TET offensive) left them so crippled and damaged they never engaged in another offensive operation until the US left the country 5 years later. I read a book written by a North Vietnamese General who said they seriously considered surrendering after Tet. You can defeat the US politically but you definitely can't defeat them militarily unless the politicians restrict the military. Those two things are not the same. The US military is vastly under estimated because so many simpletons think Afghanistan or Vietnam was a military loss. We won every battle in both places for as long as the politicians had the will to keep the military in place.
Our military can lay waste to any military on the planet. It's not even remotely close. EVERY war is fought on someone else's home turf and we still pound them. No one even suggests for an instant the US is going to get invaded or the Chinese are going to invade A US ally in another part of the world. We would crush them before they landed a single shipload of troops. 90 miles of water and Taiwan is still free. China can drive to Tibet they got run over 60 years ago. Both were seen as rogue provinces of China the only difference is that water. You think China could invade Alaska? Brazil? Panama? No one even talks about something like that because it's beyond the realm of reality.
