- On today’s episode of Danger Close, a special operations legend returns to the show.
Sergeant Major Kyle Lamb served in the United States Army for more than two decades; over 15 of those years were in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta, more commonly known as Delta Force.
During his career, he operated at the highest levels of special operations as an Assault Team Leader, Sniper Team Leader, Troop Sergeant Major, Combat Development Sergeant Major, and Task Force Sergeant Major.
In 1993, Kyle was involved in the Battle of Mogadishu, which was later depicted in the book and film Black Hawk Down.
Kyle went on to found the tactical gear and training company Viking Tactics. Today, he is the host of the Team VTAC Podcast and can often be found teaching at the SIG SAUER Academy or hunting the backcountry.
He is the author of Leadership in the Shadows , Green Eyes and Black Rifles: The Warriors Guide to Combat Carbine , and Stay in the Fight: Warriors Guide to the Combat Pistol

Had the pleasure of attending a presentation of Mr. Lamb. Several hours talking of the events at Mogadishu. He has a service dog with him. a couple times he had a bit of strain in his voice. His partner hanging around, taking it easy. It would pick up on his change of tone; get up and check on in. Kyle would give him a wave "its okay", and the pup would settle back down. Fascinating to see that.
How do he cope with the cognitive dissonance? Talking about the "noble Indians" and how "their land" was "stolen" by the US, while supporting Ukraine in their war for land that up until 1991 belonged to Russia?
I'm sure this dude also supports "our greatest ally" right now too. Which didn't exist at all before the land was given to them by Britain in 1948. How do you give a country that doesn't belong to you to a group of people? A "Colonial mandate". Oh right, also the volcano demon and their magic holy books said it belonged to them... I'd be willing to bet that most people have no clue what else their magic books say but you definitely wouldn't like it if we went around using them as guides to how everything should be. Unless you enjoy being referred to as "sub-human cattle that lack souls and exist solely to serve the chosen as slaves"? Or that a "child of 3 is a woman and can be married".. or that it's not a sin or a crime if one of the chosen robs, injures or kills a gentile.. But hey that part about the land Britain gave them in 1948, the land that didn't even belong to Britain, that's all 100% accurate. Give me a heckin' break.
My dad who is a retired cop, who actually left the police department to become a Minister was surprised when his 42 year old son (me) called him with Bible stories of Ehud and King David. Having been on Medical Leave for PTSD since this past June, his advice to me was "Keep listening, it sounds like something stuck". Thank you Jack and Kyle

When I was at basic down in Benning we had pictures of those two guys on the walls and I always looked at them said my little prayer n thank you kinda like I really looked up to them .
Lee Van Arsdale has talked about how it was not a suicide mission or anything. "They're type A personalities", of course they knew it was risky, but they're trained and competent and probably thought they could fight their way through it. The same pilot who picked up Busch at the first crash landed at the second crash but had trouble coordinating with Randy & Gary, and were forced to leave due to too much incoming fire. Had they been able to coordinate, maybe they could have all gotten out.

I can't believe you popped up, I just read The Devil's Hand and couldn't put it down, so well written and technically perfect in my opinion. You've let's us peek behind the wall you men stand on and crush the enemy while we sleep in peace. God bless all of you, and I'll be ordering the rest of these novels soon.
Thinking back on my time in the Corps and my deployment to Afghanistan I remember clearly on a number of occasions about the plates we were carrying in our plate carriers and how I wasn't going to not put my back plate in to reduce the wait. Thought about Blackhawk Down in those moments. Crazy to think that those lessons learned in blood carry throughout the ages.
as an ex sf operator from the late '70s, you guys are so fortunate to still have your homeland. i met admiral nimitz jnr in london in '93 and missed the boat to serve stateside. what a ride that would have been but by then i'd met the sociopath it took a marriage to reveal.
this is a hail mary to the brotherhood for a hot extraction. not an easy ask but time comes ... ✌.
The true warrior is humble and self assured. I am so impressed by these warriors. I can't stand listening to ego and bravado. I love reading all of Jack's books. Totally binged on it. Want more! I am a veteran myself (IDF). My way of giving back is playing music for kids (as opposed to pointing guns at them). Living amends is a real thing. It is very healing for the soul.
My dad did the same thing. We grew up on the great lakes in Ohio and we always new to look to the lake for north and that was our nav point. Used the lake and the sun to see our place and relative time. Loved it. Miss ya pops, and appreciate your conversation gentlemen!

Arguably two of the most dangerous men on the world? Maybe. More importantly? Two totally likeable guys who find contentment making other people content.

I love how unassuming he is. Doesn't give any impression that he's anything other than a super nice guy you'd love to meet at the bar. Could be an alfalfa farmer, could be one of the top operators in U.S. history. You'd never know unless he wants you to.

It’s crazy Mike Durant’s wife was my 5th grade teacher. They weren’t together anymore I don’t think at the time but she still went by Mrs. Durant. I was in her class when the movie came out as well. Crazy stuff.

Your explanation is so good. Being nurse in Alaska 40+ years, I was very familiar with it. What I had not done, was applied it to my life. Retired now…I have application! Listening to Glover and now you. Yes, it is very applicable in these times.
I have been a big fan of Kyle Lamb ever since I heard the story of the Mogadishu Mile. I had no idea how much bible knowledge the the man has. What a great podcast guys.
Met Kyle Lamb back in 2013 at Gun Gallery in Jacksonville, FL, got to shoot some of his personal Salient M&Ps, über cool guy, super humble, gave his time to a small handful of gun nut, military history nerds when he didn't have to; great times.
Kyle is one of my favorite guys to listen to. I'm retired LE, and I reached a similar conclusion. I'm an Irish wolf hound, not a sheep dog.
So am I an Irish wolfhound. Just found out I was truly Irish this year via Internet genealogy. Direct descendant from the High King, among others. His lesson at the Battle of Clontarf was not to count your chickens until they are hatched.
Wow. Hearing the Sergeant Major talk about his dad calibrating his senses by figuring out which way north is. I realize that I’ve been doing that basically my whole life. The only time, so far, I’ve ever been lost in the woods I was about 8 or 9. I stopped to check out some rabbit droppings and ended up jumping one and lost my bearings. I sat down on a log and just looked around for a few minutes. And finally between looking at the sun and listening to the creek it just kind of clicked which way was north. Then I walked straight home. I did orienteering later in high school ROTC but only did very rudimentary land nav in the Army. It sure helped out when I started policing trying to figure out where the hell I was.
Also the Army taught me to make tourniquets out of belts and boot laces and chest seals out of first aid dressing and MRE wrappers. But after I went to the combat lifesaver course I carried an IV……
And one thing I learned in a class years after I started policing is that the sheep dog doesn’t give a flying fuck about the sheep he’s there to “protect”. He’s basically using them as bait for a chance to stalk and kill the wolf.

Some great advice and information here. I particularly like the discussion on the books you read. I met a former SAS chap of my acquaintance the other day. He never really talks very much. All the more reason why I hang on his words of wisdom. He told me the following as general pieces of advice: (1). Whenever you are in problematic situation with a group of people, always help out the person that you believe to be the weakest in the group. Help them, bring them along and support them. They gain from your strength and the group as a whole gains from this 'strength multiplier.' (2). Attack everything with a sense of humour. As the late Barry Humphries once said "if you are not laughing at yourself, you may be missing out on the biggest joke."

What a fantastic interview.
It is imperative to "get your bearings" specially when in new terrain or surroundings that are unknown...finding 'North' is the beginning to writing the map in your mind.
Lamb absolutely nailed it when he said "Suicide is the destination of the self-absorbed."
The best way to combat it is to get outside yourself and out of your own head to start serving , and putting others first.

Great interview! Really need to go check out the museum. I have not been there since I ETSed in 2000. I was a 504 guy as well. I went into the Army in the late 90s as an 11B. I remember training to just make tourniquets using the old OD green bandana and a stick. It was also trained as last resort. I also remember getting CLS certified and had to learn to do IVs and carried them in the CLS bags.
Strike hold! Thank god since post 9-11 we’ve learned to importance of having actual, real tourniquets available on every soldier. In the early part of both wars studies were done and even though we had made so many advancements in combat medicine.. people were dying from extremity wounds.
Love the wolf and sheepdog analogy. That really took that to a new level.

One thought - on the question of Wolf or Sheepdog?
My mentor was a World War 1 veteran & fought in World War 2 in the OSS.
He taught me - "Most people are sheep but some are wolves and sometimes You have to be a Wolfhound!"
He didn't even entertain the idea of the Sheepdog.
A Woldhound has an inborn instinct, it hunts down the wolves, Even entering into their lair & kills every wolf it finds!
I like both what Jack & Kyle said in their considerations of the question but I think the binary question misses the point.
There are not Only Wolves and Sheepdogs... There Are Also Wolfhounds!!!

Great stories. The experience of these men is fascinating and the concept of such incredible people as J.Carr interviewing someone like K.Lamb about momentous events is just awe inspiring. It's a privilege living in this day and age...I could listen to this for hrs. Having said that, now that Lamb mentions Ukraine...I wish someone asked these lads active in the 1990's how did you stomach US allying with basically Al Qaeda in Bosnia and Kosovo (both Khaled Sheikh Mohammad and Bin Laden participated in Bosnian Muslim war effort, and Al Qaeda gained foothold in Europe thanks to US actions in Kosovo), only to suffer 9/11 and then go on an offensive against the very same people they allied with?

i liked the 'Tribe' section of this interview. I recently read a book called 'how full is your bucket', more of a leadership book on a psychological level, but being surrounded by people who have even just one interest to talk about as Mr Lamb said, really makes a big difference. You can 'fill each others buckets' easily because you've got the same interests and beliefs. No matter the ethnicity or background
also the totem pole, first part and how Kyle confirmed this in the second part on how Gary wasn't going to hang out with someone on the top of the pole. ill remember this cultural lesson for the rest of my days

Fantastic interview. My dad before he died (we were from England) worked on South African mines in the early 1970s, and I remember the local men eating mealie ( known as mealie pap to me), with gravy and I always wanted to eat it as well. However, because of the South African apartheid system even food was segregated and my dad told me I wasn’t allowed to eat with the ‘blacks’. Still my dad was away working all the time and I would eat the mealie pap and gravy every day (also the first time I drank beer aged 10, Castle Lager). You would use your hand to scoop out a thick wad of pap and dip it into the gravy and shove the pap into your mouth. A basic food that filled my gut and pleasured my taste buds. My dad was killed on April 23rd 1975 and later on we left South Africa and I’ve never had the chance to visit my dad’s grave. Years later I ended up serving in Northern Iraq near Mosul and the culture and community of the Kurds left a deep impression on me that for me juxtaposed my time eating mealie pap and drinking Castle Lager.

First time I met Kyle was at my former church which is not too far from his place. It was a Christmas Eve service and I'm at the urinal in the men's room and Kyle steps up to use the one next to me....lol....I let him finish and then introduced myself gave him thanks and respect for his service.
Jack, thank you for speaking about Jim Stockdale. My father was a flight surgeon for his air wing in ’65. Mom was traveling the orient w/ his wife Sybil and some of the other officers’ wives when the news came in that he was shot down. Bud Flagg is another aviator that should have his story told - from the Oriskany to 9/11. us
