I went to high school with Daniel Busch. We would always spar verbally about which branch of the service was the best. He went Army and I went Marine Corps in 1986. I had no idea he was even still in the Army much less an elite Delta operator until I saw he died in Mogadishu in 1993. He was a great guy with a sense of humor that was unique.

The fact that the two pilots who flew that Blackhawk basically sacrificed their lives to save the passengers on board made me respect them even more. True warriors.

I met one of the D boys from this mission when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis years ago. He was a friend of mines' ODA team Sgt. "Mike" defended the first downed Blackhawk by himself. He was recommended for the MOA, but since shughart and Gordon were killed his was downgraded to a DSC. Delta was so secretive in those days, there was no award ceremony for him. He said months later he went to the Delta compound and the award and citation was sitting in his mailbox. Amazing dude. Real old school operator, no flash or flair. Those original CAG guys were on another level.
Jim Smith and Daniel Busch defended the first crash.

I can’t help but question the strategy of the entire mission. Putting men onto street level, in a dense hostile urban environment, to be targets; requiring close air support with helos…asking for trouble. Not to mention undertaking this shortly after accidentally blowing up 200+ civilians which has turned to the entire populace against you…
I REALLY need to read more into what happened before/after this. I had no idea 200 civilians had lost their lives in an accident beforehand. No wonder it seemed like everyone was out to get them! (well, apart from how they were forced into shooting at the human shields, and how the Somalians would have perceived that too!)
Fucking hell please read the wiki from start to finish. I was surprised to find that much of what happened preceding and during the battle is omitted.
Probably were terrified of the bad optics that came from hitting the wrong target, and the solution was boots on the ground. Surely somebody thought they'd limit casualties with an armored convoy and trying to limit the Blackhawks' Time Over Target. This was more surgical but it was a recipe for things immediately going tits-up.
They had six previous incursions with little resistance and had typically gone at night to take advantage of their technology advantage - there was no electricity in the city at this point. This time they went in the middle of the afternoon because of the high value of the targets. Prior to Task Force Ranger arriving, but after the initial Marine force had left country, Aidid's militia killed American military personnel and ambushed, killed, and butchered 24 Pakistani soldiers.
I couldn't agree more, it's difficult to say what Spec Ops was like before, because there's a learning curve for any organization, but I can't help but think this was a losing battle from the beginning.
I was born where Black Hawks are born - Stratford, Connecticut. Most of my life I watched them in the skies in peaceful testing, training, and so forth, straight from the factory where my grandfather worked for 40+ years. This battle always hit home knowing the literal birds I saw every day as a child were so intimately involved. Tremendous video, as always, and unfathomable bravery.
I was born in a city called Ranger, like these soldiers in the video. Growing up in a city called ranger whilst watching a video of rangers hits home real deep it means I have this unfathomably deep connection with these brave men

Those peaceful testings led to a lot of people being mowed down in their own country by foreign troops.

Military planning 101.
Tbh the plan was bad to begin with. All they had was 4 sections of light infantry holding the perimeter against a city of hostile militia and civilians. Helos on low altitude was to serve as fire support instead of gunships on higher altitude with autocannons leading to two of them getting shot down by unguided rocket. Then the extraction was done by a convoy of humvees... Who is to drive through a city full of militia????? Sure a lot of things went very wrong, but they kind of are the direct consequences of poor planning and maybe under-estimating the enemy's strength.

I watched it as soon as I read this comment. I am sorry they were not recognized until so late, but I’m glad they have been able to tell their story. Malabatt Misi Bakara is the full name, it’s on Netflix.
I read in a book somewhere that the pilot of Star 4-1 (the little bird who landed by the first crash sight) was constantly being ordered to take off away from the crash but refused to do so 2-3 times until they got the two delta operators on board

Something the movie doesn't capture - just how big the battle actually was.
This video was much like the book, more fact based. For instance Eversman (Josh Hartnett in the movie) going into the convoy instead of the crash site.

Yeah the movie didn’t show Super 62 getting shot down while covering Stughart and Gordon after dropping them in. The delta operator in the helicopter that got hit is, Brad Halling.

Yeah, I think they seriously misjudged public sentiment. This was treated like some kind of policing action (helping the local population deal with criminals they didn't like), when in reality it was more like an invasion (a quick strike to eliminate the popular leadership of an enemy population). As such a large portion of the local population was basically hostile and willing to sacrifice their lives against what they saw as an invader.
Even if the mission was successful it seems likely that the strategic goals would not have been accomplished, as the people they were apprehending were probably replaceable.
I haven't read up on the details of the history, but this is my general sense of it based on the reactions of the unarmed locals. You have to be pretty dedicated to the cause to charge armed soldiers who are firing at you.
I'm setting aside the larger political questions around whether the US should have been in there in the first place. I'm just looking at the tactical situation - if you're mounting an invasion you can't just send in what amounts to a really strong SWAT team.
The other tactical miss of course was failing to disrupt their communications.
But balls to go in the first place.

I am stunned by the level of work you've put into these videos. As a history major, I've read about dozens of battles but trying to piece together the battle in your head based off first-hand sources can be so disorienting. With these videos though it's so easy to see and understand how the battle unfolded.
This is infinitely superior to any documentary on tv. TV relies on interspersed stock footage, interviews, and a slow narrator describing what's going on. There are occasional maps and diagrams, but it's always a little difficult to follow along with everything going on. THIS depiction is perfect, with the map always in view, clear animations showing all forces and activities, and a concise script professionally read, I can follow along precisely. Thank you so much for this wonderful content.
Seriously, I don’t get how this 20 minute video with basic animation has done a better job of covering the battle than any other documentary I’ve ever seen, not to mention a multimillion dollar movie. Even with as simple as this presentation is I still found myself on the edge of my seat hoping that the Delta operators could hold the crash site.

Considering they likely pushed the throttle downward and hit the ground nose first to ensure their fellow crewmembers wouldn't take the brunt of the impact right after, kings would be a very apt description of those brave men.

This is incredible. Just a small nitpick : Delta Force isn't 'a company.' They are commonly referred to as 'The Unit' or 'CAG'. For anyone interested in reading more about this event, I highly recommend Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden and In The Company of Heroes by Michael J. Durant. Mike Durant is the downed Black Hawk pilot.
There is also a book out there from POV of a navy seal who fought in that battle but I forgot the name of it

This is a very well presented and accurate illustration of that day. Just a small side note, My friend CW4 Raymond Frank was the copilot of Super 64. He was badly injured in the crash but still managed to exit the ship, take a defensive position and protect the crew until he ran out of ammunition and was over run and killed. Later he was awarded the Silver Star and inducted in to the Army Aviation Hall of Fame. He too was a legend.

While Shughart and Gordon were defending Super Six-Four, their teammate Sergeant First Class Brad Halling provided covering fire with one of Super Six-Two's miniguns after its gunner had been wounded.
Incredibly brave men.
They didn't just volunteer, they did so multiple multiple times. And when the answer was no, they demanded. They could see survivors on the ground and there wasn't a chance in hell they would leave them behind.
Those Medals of Honor are some of the most well deserved.

Exactly what I was thinking. Only thing with the movie was, it's hard to gauge the distances and where people are coming and going. This birds-eye view of this video really helped.

My understanding was not only was Blackburn not Ranger qualified, he was not Air Assault either. He was straight from initial training and assignment from Infantry school.
If that is indeed the case, probably would have had better luck on an Airborne mission without ever going to jump school.
I'm curious myself of the claim that Blackburn wasn't Ranger qualified, as his service photo shows him with both a tab and a scroll...tab requiring completion of Ranger School and Ranger scroll requiring completion of Ranger Indoctrination Program.

I had friends that were deployed in Somalia during this. They tell me it was a cluster as the military planners for this mission seriously under estimated the SNA and mobs. He said the biggest problem was there wasn't any extra support standing by from the 10th Mountain and others.
Given TF Ranger IGNORED the 10th Mountain until they NEEDED help...what would one expect? 2-14 INF worked a MIRACLE.
They weren’t informed of the raid. 10th mountain saved their cocky asses.

Most of us have either seen, or heard about the movie 'Black Hawk Down', but I am not aware of anyone putting out a video with such in-depth information about what actually happened, until now!

It's Hollywood done right when telling a story. Unlike for instance... I mean I could name 100 war movies here but you get the idea.
History nerd who's studying film here for context.
Ridley Scott's goal for Black Hawk Down was to tell a story that was factual and explore the motives and psychi behind the people involved. There was little political message.
Most war movies people think fall squarely in one of two camps.
1. Blatant propaganda film with the old us verses them and "America fuck yeah". Tend to exaggerate US capability while discrediting others, both allies and foe alike. Characters tend to be far away from reality. They tend to also be based around actual battles/events.
A Bridge too Far. The Longest Day. Most war films prior to the 70s.
2. The reactionary response to the above, the protest war film. Usually character driven, doesn't have a focus on a specific battle usually. These became the norm during and after Vietnam. Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Jarhead.
It's why Black Hawk Down is one of the best war films made. Its goal was a retelling. There's things it changed and has elements from both those categories above. There's heavy characterisation, people challenging why they're there.
There's also exaggeration of US involvement, or rather discrediting others. In BHDs case the Pakistanis in the end.
People still argue whether the film is pro-war or anti-war. Which is why in my opinion it's great.
Because you can't tell.

As a German, a foreigner, I never really understood from the little news and pieces of information just why Mogashiu was such a monumentous desaster. This piece really helped to undestand the extent of the mess. Thank you, good sir, for this phenomenal presentation. My thoughts are with the friends and family of the fallen soldiers.

Just like watching professional sports, it's easy to see what they should have done with a birds eye view from my comfy couch. I can only imagine how confusing and manic it must have felt for the guys on the ground.

Drone strike the crowd next time
Don't give the us benefit of the doubt. They're done this before many times, and don't learn from it.
During one operation the different teams, Navy Seals and such argued with each other over who was gonna send their troops in helicopters.
And ended up picking unqualified and inexperienced groups who wasn't specialized in aerial movement in desert storms.
Which is what the original group was and their pilots. But this was prestige.
Then there's the US underestimating the Africans as inferior, yet during this operation the warlords learnt that they were launching helicopters and assembled all their troops, collected rpgs and setup quick improvised barricades that were also armed with explosives.
Meanwhile the US command think they can wait minutes to scout the area and situation so they can later give orders on what to do and go. Until suddenly they come across a barricade. Now they say up in their helicopter "Hold on while I scout the area"

This is the best data I've come across on this incident. My Uncle was a little bird pilot involved in this operation. His name is Lt. Michael R. Sander. To what extent he was involved I cannot say. He never spoke about it. I can relate though as I am a former Naval Ordnanceman with two deployments to the Persian Gulf on CVN-70 USS Carl Vinson, in support of OIF / Afghanistan. All males in my family with the last name Sander, must serve at least one mandatory term in the military, in a branch of their choosing. 🇺🇲

Back in 2002, I happened to speak to an older man who claimed to be an Army Ranger veteran who fought in this battle. I remember him saying that the film was very accurate, but he said that the roads and alleys of real life Mogadishu are much, much more narrow and constricted. There was much less open ground and room to maneuver than you see in the film. This of course means the combat was even more intense and ferocious than you see in the film, which is already an extremely intense film.
In an interview one of the guys said that the street where they had held out over night was completely covered in brass the following morning. Just an insane amount of shots were fired at those poor bastards throughout this battle. Luckily they couldnt aim for shit. Well most of them. But man the amount of 7.62 comin at ya I cant imagine

but in the movie 6-8 just got some AK bullens in rotor dish and took minimal damage, while the RPG shooter has been turned into meatball. Also never seen any trace of more minigun work in there, And no rants, not absolutely everything ned to be directly tossed into screen to viewer knowledge.
In talking with Jason Moore and John Belman in the past they said when they screened the movie for the veterans of the battle, all walked out silently and agreed it was an accurate movie of events, though they said that some parts had to add some Hollywood into it.

Almost finished but had to pause to say RIP to Shugart and Gordon . That was exemplary courage and valor displayed . They served the country well . Situations like this is where I stop and think about the situations our soldiers can be put in … it reminds me to check myself for the times I said the military is spoiled and easy.
Delta snipers Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon were awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously, and were the first to be award the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam war. Two perfect examples of valor and selfless sacrifice.
I’ve studied this raid and watched many interviews and documentaries about this.
It’s amazing how many details the were able to fit into the movie Blackhawk down. But naturally left some of it out.
It was by far one on my favorite studies and movies.
They truly weren’t going to leave anyone behind even if it meant dieing.
The biggest thing I found surprising is how little Everrsman actually played in the raid. He was never at the crash site.

I was able to touch Super 61's rotor when it was at the special operations museum in Fayetteville. Reading the hand written note intended for Gordon and Shughart by SGM Whitaker may have been one of the most emotional experiences I had at Fort Bragg. "Gary + Randy. This is Rick. The team is coming for you. We don't forget. We're not leaving without you guys!"

Amazing production.
This is what happens when you get too cocky in an urban environment where the line between combatants and civilian is blurred to say the least. An audacious attempt maybe, but reckless in the end result.
Watching this gives me a whole other kind of appreciation for the movie. I'm imagining all the scenes from the film as I watch the video, great animation work, can't even imagine the effort it took to put this together. More importantly though, it's a great way to rememberer the heroes from that day.

The book “Black Hawk Down” by Mark Bowden is a must read. There are some surprising differences between the book and movie. If you are a small unit leader in the military you must read it. The lessons learned from the decisions made by those in Black Hawk Down are priceless.
An excellent book for sure. Mark's book, Killing Pablo, is extremely exciting as well. It follows the DEA, CIA, Delta Force, and Colombian forces' hunt for Pablo Escobar.

No tactician, but it seems like the US forces underestimated their enemy. Going deep into such a mess with out any heavy armor on call to get you out of trouble or real air power - like a squadron of A-10s seems like pure insanity to me.
Mike Durant's book, where he lets a couple of things go that he never mentioned about that day, was also very worthwhile.
I was lucky enough to visit Somalia in 1958 (Still British Somaliland) when I was 7. Beautiful country from what I can remember, shame there is still rival clan infighting.

This Battle will be studied for generations. The Special Edition DVD included a fantastic documentary also, but the birds eyes view of this video brings things into a new perspective.

I was on joint staff duty 90 to 93. I was one of the guys running the audio video conference for the big brass. I remember when the rangers were ordered into this area and the Commanding general requested a company of M1 Abrams and Bradley’s as support. Sec of defense Aspin over road the approval by the Army. I was in Somali in army Intel. I left country just three weeks prior to this and was sent right back afterwards. I’ve always wondered if our departure left an intel gap while our replacements figured out how to find their asses with both hands and a map.
