I was lucky with my dog that when I got him I had a very well behaved 13 yr old yellow lab who helped a lot with training. Whenever I had to board a dog or have a friends dog visit I would put him in a crate where he could observe the proper way to greet dogs and people. On walks he had a puppy carrier so he could learn how to socialize with other dogs from a safe distance. He also had puppy playdates with my friends pitbull pups and mind you he is a besenji, Yorkie, shi-tsu, and poodle. He loved it when I did dog sitting/walking apps. Living in Peru now he doesn't mind it if an off leash dog wants to come play (he had to go through tons of paperwork and get vaccinated before coming here) he is leash reactive but I find that once he is able to interact with some dogs he is ok for the day.

Hi Ian thank you for sharing an insight to your pound area it’s so well spaced and clean too tells a lot about the owner too

Simply watching this video gave me tremendous anxiety! Tis my problem with my own dogs who are friendly. All from past trauma in breaking up so many fights between my dogs from back before I had to figure out what the heck I was doing. So obviously it was the human's fault for not knowing what to do or not to do. Now my body reacts on its own even though I know what I should be doing. I cannot seem to get over that initial response. And we all know what happens when you have a negative expectation going into these situations... so usually if I can't do the initial introduction through a fence, I try not to do it at all. My dogs are just way too powerful to take chances with! But I would like for them to have dog friends. My service dog has many friends but he is super easy to read and I don't have any negative memories associated with him and other dogs. I also have a super duper tight bond with this dog because he's with me everywhere I go. It's only with my dogs that have been in fights. So how do you suggest getting over these things.

I would work on your breathing in those situations even while they are playing to get your body to calm down and not be so antsy while play is happening.

@@VermontDogTrainerI am working on breathing in my nose for 4 seconds and blowing it out for 8. It's helpful I just wish I could prevent that initial onset. But the breathing helps once it does come on. I guess having good experiences will help over time.

I have a 3 yr old lab pit mix named Abel. Who does very well on leash with other dogs but can get a little tense and barks with new people. Before his traumatizing vet visit he loved people. He’d walk up to everybody. Now he is more defensive and isn’t too keen on letting people other than immediate family pet him. He’s very obedient but I struggle with trying to teach him that anyone we walk by isn’t something to bark or lunge at. What are some tips you would recommend?

Any tips on how to socialize dogs with people. Especially BIG ones, like Great Danes. Mine is nervous around people and his go to is to create space

My family just adopted a 1 yr neutered Male pitbull from the humane society. We have a 2 yr old pit that's not spayed yet. He is not kennel trained, house trained, and has separation anxiety. Separate they are great...we walk them side by side they are okay, but at home we have to separate. Where do we start. The female will be spayed asap.
