How to Solve Dog Aggression | Dog Nation

  • In this Dog Nation Episode, I help Sho Nuff, a dog who is very dog aggressive. Have you ever experienced dog aggression with your dog? Or have you seen this with other dogs and their pet parents even after they've done extensive #dogtraining ?
For Sho Nuff's pet parents, he has unpredictable dog behavior and his owners are anxious that whenever they go on a walk, Sho Nuff will attack other dogs. And we all know that a #dogfight and #dogattacks are not fun to experience and can cause stress for dogs as well as the owners.
A lesson to learn from this overall is that it is important to #walkyourdog with confidence and separate the story from the reality! Say that again....SEPARATE THE STORY FROM THE REALITY.
Do you think I can solve this case?

Yes! As a blind person, I can attest to this. You feel what the dog is doing, communicate via touch, words, love. Even though some dogs can be extremely visual communicators, they can be tought to respond to the voice and other senses.
I wish I could have really watched it, had it explained to me. This is fascinating how he was all growls, then later, not a sound.
    Beautiful work as always, Cesar.

Use a basket muzzle before he does! And correct him while on leash (pin him) if tries to attack. If he stares for too long with ears up in a stiff way, make a fast leash correction with a hiss noise from you. Do this every single time while on leash until he learns to never engage a dog in an aggressive way. From there, you can teach the dog to learn to trust other dogs by your lead and your lead only. Discipline is usually the missing piece of the puzzle in all aggression cases and timing is everything. The reward is getting to meet/socialize and have freedom when they do it right.

I watch every single video of yours as a lesson, but not for training my own home buddies or the dogs in my shelter but for myself, I believe you help people first to know how to communicate with them. And understand what is trust and respect in the dogs language first, then try to train them to be happy, loved, calm and obedien down. For someone like me who has been running a shelter for more than 2 decades in a country that basically having a dog is some sort of crime! and also has no access to any international or professional help 😕 your videos and lessons are very valuable and I appreciate it. So I wanna say thanks again. I ve mentioned it for several times before but I think it would never be enough to thank you dear Cesar

Awesome, Cesar, as usual. Our bull terrier pup reacts the same way this dog did, when other dogs are around, but ours is super excited and wants to meet them, not necessarily kill them however it always feels like that to me. I try to keep calm but it's so hard when I'm afraid our dog will possibly hurt another one from sheer exuberance and dogged determination.

That walk that he does at 1:25 - My dog (Beagle & Jack Russell mix) used to do that whenever we would walk up to our favorite walking trail because she just gets so excited to be on the trail. But I spent weeks & weeks training her on the leash & she doesn’t do it anymore. It was annoying @ the time but seeing this dog do it made me miss when my dog would do it lol.

You're the dog rescuer! You never fail to amaze me. I have a reactive gsd but have her under control. Answered the door yesterday and she barked then settled but there were other door to door people going past so she'd give a bark at them. The guy said she was going nuts. I replied that's not nuts, she's being a shepherd. Nuts would've been if she'd gone beyond the boundary I've set for her. When I'm in on my own, her job is to protect me but I keep her safe which is, for me, the most important thing. Yeah she thinks she's protecting mum, but I'm in control. Snap of my fingers and she shuts up! 😂 😂

Once again Cesar shows how important is ENERGY!! This video is very helpful for me: my dog (cane corso/pitbull mix) has a very similar attitude around other dogs; even if he knows very well the basic commands, he loses his mind when he sees other dogs. But i understand again that it's up to ME to guide him into the right way to be. THANKS CESAR!! Better humans, better planet ✌🏻

    • @markfuller

I wish Cesar would talk more about the energy, mindfulness, etc. Most people don't understand it. It sounds like naval-gazing gibberish. Understanding one's own mind, how we exist with self-talk (inner narratives, a story), being able to differentiate the moment without all that, is transforming. People don't realize how they go through life in a fog, and believing their own narrative. They're present in their narrative, not what's actually happening.
The one thing that made this clear to me was Libet's discovery of a 2/10th second delay between the subconcious deciding something, and our conscious mind believing it chose. That's not a lot of time. But, it's enough to show that we aren't in control of ourselves the way we believe we are. Our subconcious is 90% of our brain. Our consciousness emerges from that. And, as Libet discovered, it's an ongoing emergence (not like you wake up in the morning and now you're in control. Choices, thoughts, judgements occur slightly before we consciously believe we "had that thought, choice, judgement." It's like believing our own lies. (Researchers are conflicted on just how significant Libet's discovery was. They quibble about what it means for free will. But, the essentiall process is there that our conscious mind emerges from the subconscious. We aren't in conscious control of ourselves the way we think we are. Mindfulness practice brings us closer to that emergent nature, and we're able to exercise a veto power over what we recognize emerging. Rather than reacting to it as if it's "reality.").

I noticed Cesar changed to a collar around the neck instead of using the harness. I’m a professional dog sitter/walker, and more than half of my clients don’t want anything around their dog’s neck. A harness is for sled pulling! Maybe, once the dog is trained not to aggressively pull towards other dogs, then you can use the harness, but otherwise, use a collar so you can correct the dog. It won’t hurt the dog if used correctly. Thanks Cesar for your videos.
