I do love the carnival wheel bit It's always an annoying thing that people don't, jump to the side whenever something is chasing them, but they do here, just a neat 90 degree turn-*oh shit it's actually chasing them!* And I never realised the fear of a round rolling object chasing you like it has a vendetta until now, I wish more series did this that's hilarious!
No, but seriously. Bruno is the only one who didn’t get a happy ending. They’ve basically left him there by himself to just.. fix the same robots for the rest of his life without any real purpose. Am I the only one who find this kind of effed up?
32:15 the weight puzzle is actually a somewhat well known mathematical puzzle that I briefly studied in uni. So because there’s only one coin that’s lighter and the rest are the same there’s an algorithm you can construct that is essentially a fool proof flow chart as no matter which weight it is you’ll always be able to find the awnser in a certain amount of weights. The general gist being to split the groups into 3 and compare group 1-2 and then the lighter and then using that info to rule out all possibilités. For this puzzle in particular with three weighing opportunities on the scale you can have up to 27 coins and it’s still solvable and for 4 tries you can have 81. (It’s called just the balance puzzle)
You know, your channel might be my favourite that I found last year. Your Strange Man ANthology is actually my favourite background video for gaming atm
I am so excited to see a full Professor Layton series from someone fresh to most of the entries. Level-5 did a superb job with these games, with the original trilogy being quite the highlight. This doesn't really matter for now, but there is a good Professor Layton movie cannon to the story of the second trilogy (PL and the Eternal Diva). It's still not completely necessary for having a grasp of that story's plot, but the dub was free on UA-cam last I checked if you're interested.
I literally just watched this movie again for like the 8 th time last night. It’s so good. It can help give new players an understanding of the characters and who they are if they don’t want to play the games. Which I’m okay with because I’ll be happy if ANYONE gets into professor layton whether it’s the correct order of play or not
Funnily enough, my experience with ace attorney and professor layton was the opposite of yours. Professor Layton is one of my favorite childhood games and I became an ace attorney fan after I played the crossover
I really want them to make an HD collection of these Professor Layton games for modern consoles like what Capcom did with Ace Attorney, these puzzle adventure games are great, and it would be awesome to see the animation in a higher definition.
32:20 hey, I played that puzzle back when I did my playthrough and one piece of information i had going in is that it is a VERY old kind of puzzle, and is NOT trial and error. You can use logic solve them consistently. For the example shown, there are 8 weights, 7 have the same weight and one is lighter and you need to find the light one with only 2 uses of the scale. The solution is to do 3 on one side and 3 on the other: If they balance, weigh the remaining 2 to find the light one. If one side is lighter, pick two of those to weigh. If one is lighter, it's that one. If both are the same, it's the third one. The alternate variation I saw had a weight that was different, may be lighter or heavier, and the only difference was you have a third turn to compare with a weight you know is average.
I've adored Professor Layton for years. Funnily, I had a very similar block as you and Star- though I first played it back in like 2010 so I only played the first and didn't make it to the next several games until the last few years. Beautiful games with very touching stories. Unwound Future in particular really got to me.
I got into the Layton games because when I was a little kid, my mom had printed out a sheet of ‘educational’ children’s games. I didn’t even get them as a little kid! I just internalized that they existed until I was older. Thanks for introducing me to such a fun puzzle adventure game, random early 2000s mom blog!
Professor Layton is my favorite series ever made. Its puzzles are engaging, its characters are charming, its settings are fascinating, and its stories are captivating. And it's the series I turn to when I really, REALLY need to cry, because these stories turn the heart to *mush.* You've completed the tamest one, now prepare to have your heart destroyed 4 or 5 more times. Seriously, if you have a soul, you are *not* prepared for Unwound Future and Azran Legacy.
I should have commented sooner, but I have to say I just love your video style. You're the first channel that made me login and sub to someone. As for this video, I just...have so many memories flooding in. I remember my older sister getting this game when I was a kid. Mom and dad took the family to see the grandparents, and my older brother and I huddled around my sister to look at the story unfolding and to try to help with puzzles. This game holds so much nostalgia because of that. My sister never finished the game, but I pocketed it so my brother and I could beat it ourselves. I still have the game on my nightstand next to my 3DS. The game has such a pretty artstyle too! I hope I can form a similar artstyle of my own someday.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village was one of the first games I ever got on the DS, and it was my main introduction to puzzle/mystery games. I've played almost every game in the series and I'm so excited for the new one that was announced last year!
Me and my siblings bonded over this series so much!!!! It's a core part of my childhood that I'll always hold near and dear to my heart. So happy it's getting some attention!!!
Which is literally why it’s a puzzle. “Trial and error” and “puzzles” are completely incompatible. If you’ve resorted to former, you’ve ruined the latter.
Oh, OH. Oh I loved this and I really hope you guys do videos on the rest of the games! ESPECIALLY Unwound/Lost Future- that one's my favorite and I always love seeing how different people react to its story!
YESSS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!! (one adorable detail you missed is that Flora's golden apple mark only appears when she laughs; the Baron wanted to leave his fortune to someone who was able to make his daughter laugh ToT)
"One must always put a lady's needs first." Layton would then proceed to completely forget about Flora and constantly abandon her on the side of the road(LITERALLY, in the case of the next game) despite the fact he is effectively her guardian. Level-5 games would then have the games after set before the original trilogy in order to replace her with an older, cooler lady sidekick. Seriously no one gets f'd over more than Flora in the Professor Layton series. It's ridiculous how often she's just straight up abandoned by Layton because, much like the average Victorian gentlemen, he prefers little boys over girls.
I love your videos because you always cover games that I haven't played but are super interesting. It was also great to see you interact with a guest. Star was great, especially for someone thats not a youtuber.
It's always a pleasure to see new videos from you with guests! haven't finished the video yet but the sponsorship bit was GREAT, something about the usually monotonous (?) Ben whimpering was just hilarious. Mrrawr
Ben Again is at its best as a Co-op/guest channel and you cant change my mind. (Having more vibrant personalities to contrast Bens monotone disposition is great)
I swear with each video you post I like this channel even more. I found you because of indie horror rpg, but then I find out you also like Ghost Trick? and Professor Layton? and Ace Attorney?!? THOSE ARE ALL MY FAVORITE THINGS!!!! And your whole style of video is exactly what I love to watch. Top tier channel, easily one of my favorites
The aesthetic of the game is so charming I really enjoyed watching the gameplay in this one. Both of you had some great comedic timing, so listening was pretty fun too also that ad was gold 11/10
Great video! Layton has been a big part of my childhood (even though I only played the first trilogy). And I'm glad to see a video of yours about the game. Btw. Have you played Slay the Princess? Is a short and sweet horror visual novel that I like very much. I'm not asking for a video about it. But rather I just share it because it's such a great game.
as a longtime fan of the layton series, i was thrilled when i saw the community post!! i hope you enjoy the series a lot :) i'm def looking forward to seeing the rest of the games covered
My mother used to play these games on our DS. We found them a while ago and because of this video I decided to play it. I found it a great experience and want to thank you for it
i completed the game 100% in 3 days while only looking up one puzzle (chocolate note one). i loved all the puzzles you hated and i feel like a puzzle ninja haha
Love the video, though I'm also seeing you guys attribute several puzzles to "trial and error" and couldn't help thinking "skill issue." (Not the rush-hour sliding block puzzle though - that can go straight to heck, and you are forgiven for hating those.) The weight puzzle is actually one of "the classics" in the realm of logic puzzles (so's the raft puzzle), and what its variants are *actually* asking of you is to figure out a *guaranteed* method of determining the right weight, which does indeed exist - actually hurt to see you say it was one of your least favorites. The angry neighbors one also has a few graph-theory tricks you can apply to determine where certain neighbors *have* to pass through, what spaces only one neighbor *can* pass through, etc. (And speaking of graph theory, the "shapes you can/can't draw with one line" puzzles also serve as another "classic" that focus on exactly that (if you want to solve them quickly without any tracing), focusing on parity in the number of "edges" each "node" has and what that means for the necessary number of line starts and ends.) And yeah, the math puzzles early on in the series can be annoying, but I like that many of them are really just asking you to find a sneaky way of saying one line/area is actually the same as another line/shape that's much easier to calculate the value of or even has said value stated outright (like (in the first math puzzle you showed, as an example) line AC actually having the same length as hypothetical line BD (i.e. the already-provided radius)). Or, to use the yellow and blue flag example, it becomes way more simple when you throw out the specific numbers for a minute and convert everything to fractions and just *visualize* the problem instead of mathing it. If it looks like you need trigonometry to solve a puzzle, there's a trick answer you're missing.
Thete is always so funny about someone as prim and proper as the Professor. A proper english gentleman of great renown, getting held up in such high octane scenarios
I adore the Layton series!!! I saw an ad for Last Specter one day and bought the game shortly after. Before even finishing the game I knew I had to get all the other games too!! I ordered them all and played them in order of the story, then eagerly awaited Miracle Mask and the games that would follow. Nothing hits as good as a Layton puzzle, and I’m so glad they’re continuing the series still!
I've actually only played the 2nd and 3rd games, but they were a HUGE influence on the games I would play going forward. I don't think I would have picked up 999 if it wasn't for the professor.
I found Ben again(again) a few weeks ago just at the end of 2023 and have been watching every video he has I love this channel the editing is nice and not over the top it doesn’t try to make a joke every 2 seconds and it’s nice to put on in the background normally I hate when a solo channel has guest/friends join on a video but Ben’s friends are all nice and fun like him I really enjoy your work Ben and want more. Thanks amazing content as always Ben.
Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright is one of my favorite games, mostly for the nostalgia. I also became aware of it through the Ace Attorney side of things, which led me to Professor Layton. I’m excited to watch this video! Edit: Don’t ya just hate being chased by a ferris wheel?
Ahhh, I love this game and I'm so happy you covered it!!! and your sponser segments CONTINUE to crack me tf up!!! Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!
My mom introduced me to this game when I was younger, and I got hooked on it. For a while now, my phone ringtone has been the puzzle song from the original game!
7:39 It should be noted that this is a mistranslation. Luke isn’t just good with animals, he can *talk* to animals. This becomes a major plot point for the rest of the series
Do you have any idea when you'll be uploading the next game? I really enjoyed this video, and I'm excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the series.
aw i love these games! got jumpscared to hell by the difference between the american dub’s luke and the english dub’s luke though. where’s my boy’s terrible cockney accent? 😭 looking forward to the rest of the series!
Love the Layton series! The one with his daughter, Katrielle was a good game too and the anime series starring her is worth watching since Layton and Luke appear in it too in some episodes
I absolutely love the Layton games!! I remember playing through all of them (except the goofy crossover game) as a young tween. I needed some help on a couple of the puzzles, but I got through them! I cried so much at the end of each of the games.
I’m sure someone has pointed this out already, but the ‘puzzle’ in the weight puzzles isn’t actually figuring out which one the is the lightest; evidenced by the fact there’s no set answer and it is randomized every time you hit restart. Instead, the actual puzzle is figuring out the method that covers all your grounds, and allows you to figure it out Every. Single. Time. All of the weight puzzles can be solved without guessing, and the ‘real puzzle’ is figuring out how - not figuring out which weight it randomized to. Basically asking you to formulate a plan/script for how to find it every time, which is incredibly satisfying once you see how to do it Of course, CV isn’t without flaws, but I dont think the weight puzzles are one of them. Incredibly entertaining video, hoping to see you cover more layton games!
slight thing, the weight puzzles arent actually trial and error. you can always for sure get the right one in the amount of moves they give you, and figuring out how is the puzzle.
THANK YOU BEN FOR HAVING ME

@starwalk2k you are really funny I would love if you made videos I would definitely watch them and thank you for being part of the video much love.

I really like the type of games he covers, Ben and his friends inputs make it twice as enjoyable

That sponsor segment was glorious, I loved every second.

The last puzzle always tore my heart to bits 😭
That sword fighting is so goddamn epic… and the *music* during it! Absolutely my favorite moment in the game.

They have mobile ports which tbh work the best considering the drawing controls

For the example shown, there are 8 weights, 7 have the same weight and one is lighter and you need to find the light one with only 2 uses of the scale.
The solution is to do 3 on one side and 3 on the other:
If they balance, weigh the remaining 2 to find the light one.
If one side is lighter, pick two of those to weigh. If one is lighter, it's that one. If both are the same, it's the third one.
The alternate variation I saw had a weight that was different, may be lighter or heavier, and the only difference was you have a third turn to compare with a weight you know is average.

I have played the whole series! Been looking forward to seeing your opinion!
7:39 It should be noted that this is a mistranslation. Luke isn’t just good with animals, he can *talk* to animals. This becomes a major plot point for the rest of the series
I love the Layton games so much ❤ Loved the video!
Do you have any idea when you'll be uploading the next game? I really enjoyed this video, and I'm excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the series.
I think it will drop in March at the earliest.
I haven’t seen/heard about professor layton in ages… this brings back memories
Me too 😁
aw i love these games! got jumpscared to hell by the difference between the american dub’s luke and the english dub’s luke though. where’s my boy’s terrible cockney accent? 😭
looking forward to the rest of the series!
For what it's worth, the math puzzle at 33:15 has pretty elegant solution (assuming I did it right)
Professor Layton is one of my all time favorite games. Its bonkers story was always part of the fun for me. Another excellent video!
The first ben crossover, a big moment for the channel
Love the Layton series! The one with his daughter, Katrielle was a good game too and the anime series starring her is worth watching since Layton and Luke appear in it too in some episodes
29:23 They almost treat her like that in future games
This was great. I loved these games since I'm a kid, and I hope you'll cover the other games.
Basically asking you to formulate a plan/script for how to find it every time, which is incredibly satisfying once you see how to do it
Of course, CV isn’t without flaws, but I dont think the weight puzzles are one of them. Incredibly entertaining video, hoping to see you cover more layton games!
Star sounds likes a great guy
slight thing, the weight puzzles arent actually trial and error. you can always for sure get the right one in the amount of moves they give you, and figuring out how is the puzzle.
