one solution I can think of for the machine problems is that they’re hypnotised to ignore pure black, not that they can’t see it, because you can’t really be hypnotised to become unable to see something. Their minds could sub-consciously plot a way around the machine to avoid bumping into it, and then discard any mental note of it. What I really love about this game is that it's the sole reason why the ideas from Apollo Justice don't really carry on to the future Ace Attorney games. Since Takumi and his team were so busy with Layton vs. Wright and Capcom really wanted a new AA game, they decided to give the B team (Investigations) full creative control of the series, and they proceeded to drive off-road for the next two games. Takumi and his team, having become the B team afterwards, were relegated to the Great Ace Attorney, where ideas from AJ:AA and PLvPW *do* carry on.
Honestly, Apollo Justice was a total narrative trainwreck that felt like the writers were constantly doing shit without even remotely thinking about the consequences or if it was a good idea beyond the initial shock value, so I am glad for this game indirectly forcing Takumi to step away from the mainline so things didn't get any more messed up. I firmly believe that an actual AJ 2 would've only made things worse, and instead we got Dual Destinies, which is easily one of the best mainline games in the series.
You earned my like the instant that you said Darklaw being the villain so that Espella didn’t have to deal with being the one to burn down the town was a cop-out. I’ve said that for years and I haven’t heard anyone else say the same thing! It was so disappointing to me. I can’t help but be charmed by this game despite all of its flaws…but goodness am I very aware of them 😂 Also, great use of Hotel Dusk and (I think?) Trace Memory music! Going to check out more of your channel - great work on this :)
32:30 Yeah, I like this game, and even I cannot fathom why on earth they would introduce an incurable terminal illness and then reveal the cure in the span of a minute in the last scene of the game.
I love the ridiculous grand unveiling of how everything works, the madman logic felt right in line with the rest of Layton. What I didn't care for as much was the fact this town's tragic history didn't really matter. The game was hitting on some very heavy themes with Kira, Jean, Espella, and the persecution of the witches, their unfair plight. There was a rebellious spirit there I was really getting into before the Storyteller robbed all that of its weight and it became the misguided folly of some old guy with waaaaay too much money. The family drama at the end was fine I guess but just didn't hit as hard as the rest.
Yeah, it all feels like they settled for a ridiculous (kinda fun) but bad Layton ending, instead of just letting shu takumi cook. If they really wanted to make a game deserving of the ace attorney title: They would've made barnham relevant. Every single prosecutor in ace attorney is at least present in the final case of their game. They would've found a way to write an actual culprit into the final case, because children accidentally slaughtering a town are victims, not culprits. The biggest villains of the game were bad parenting, sci-fi water and a silver bell, I think we can all agree that inanimate objects don't count. Phoenix would've been portrayed as more capable than Layton in court, because in this game he feels like AA1 phoenix while Layton feels like AA3 phoenix with a British accent. They would've let Maya use her powers and detect that none of the victims were really dead, instead of only finding out after being 'burnt' herself. Like c'mon, they even let Luke talk to animals, supernatural abilities were not off the table. They would'nt have relied on the 'pursuit' mechanic as much, the video mentions they the mechanic returns in GAA, but in GAA it's only used for specific character interactions and not 'after you pressed this statement you can progress the plot, this testimony was completely meaningless.' which is how the crossover uses it. I personally can't just look past all their blatant ignoring of the ace attorney source material just to write Phoenix and Maya into a Layton game. Ps: I don't mean any disrespect, I understand that the game can be enjoyed despite these shortcomings
I really hope this game gets ported. Thankfully the fact that characters from this game appear in AA's 20th anniversary artwork shows that Capcom does consider this to be a "real" Ace Attorney game. I mean it makes sense especially with how much TGAA builds off the crossover.
I was hyperfixating immensely on both these franchises so bad when this game was announced. like obsessed so fucking obsessed like this was avengers endgame. it didn't really completely hold up for me at the end, but i still hold it fondly in my heart, because these are really two of my favourite game franchises of all time. p.s. barnham is best boy.
I know some people found lots of loopholes in the plot but I just found it so enjoyable and cleverly done. Maya was her goofy self and I loved the story. I am a HUGE Ace Attorney fan as well and have officially played every single one now AAI is on modern consoles!
5:30 for me is the other way around, I was a huge Layton fan when I bought this game, I was willing to see the Layton part, and I didn't know what Ace Attorney was. This game introduced me to the AA series, and after playing the original trilogy I replayed the crossover focusing on the AA part. One of the best games I've played
Love this game. Yeah it is more Layton featuring Phoenix Wright (as some put it), but that's also a good game idea. And, say what you will, this is the first and only game in either series that makes fricking Vantablack a plot point. (30:20 I imagine this working like the people see the black things and subconsciously avoid bumping into them, but the hypnosis prevents their brain from acknowledging it. So they cant see through, left brain just autocompletes vision like it does with our blind spots. All the magic in London was done after opening or holding the book. My bigger pet-plothole: Why was Kira casually bombing the marketplace?)
I think the reason Kira bombed the marketplace was so Phoenix would discover what was going on with the Shades. Without that incident, Phoenix would have never investigated the fire pit in the courtroom, which would mean he wouldn't have met up with Maya and Layton, and Espella wouldn't have been brought to the ancient ruins and had her memories re-awoken in that way. In addition, Phoenix would not have had the necessary information to solve all that stuff in The Final Witch Trial. Though Phoenix was not initially planned to be there, I would imagine she brought him into her plans at this point. It's been a while since I played this game fully so I could be wrong.
@@claire-xh6rn Yeahhh, no. I could believe it all being an overcomplicated plan when it comes to her "losing" the bell or not wearing the invisibility robe. But Kira also runs away for no reason and trips over her robe. This does point to her just being an incompetent shadow, which I then need to point out is a likelier explanation for everything. Imagine the instructions for this series of events. She isn't even wearing her glasses still (maybe shadows get contacts though?). And even then, bombing the market is a weird way to get attention from someone already searching for any and all clues.
I remembered following this game back when it was announced as a concept back when I was a new young layton fan. I never heard of the ace attorney series but I remember being so enamored with the idea of these two "fighting" that my imagination went wild ! After playing the finished project, I'm satisfied with how it ended over all as coming back to it before the 3ds closing, remembering how fun the world of this story is
I love this game. It’s a straight up banger. It’s close to the top of both my AA and Layton best of lists. More people need to be able to play it and it totally needs to be on newer consoles.
7:58 "But not only is this game insanely long" >he says about the shortest game in both Layton and Ace Attoney series also 16:37 is the first appearance of Lettie Mailer, the best character in the game
@@JackieJKENVtuberit depends on who plays it tbh, all other AA games took me more but all other PL games took me way less (the only one that came close was UF)
I’m one of the people who is completely new to Ace Attorney and has every game on switch and that is it. It’s quickly become one of my favorite series ever I’m borderline addicted. You’re right I really wish I could give the OG Layton games and PLvsPWAA a go but I just can’t lol. Hopefully that changes before the new game comes out but idk.
Hey Voyan! I'm gonna need you to talk about every aspect of every Professor Layton game ever. Oh, and please hurry up with your next video! Love, viewer
With Mystery Room, this is the only Layton game I haven't played yet, and I am ABSOLUTELY LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAY IT. So, for the first time... I wont be watching your video. That's heart wrenching. I'll miss your voice and Yo-kai Watch puns, voyan. I'll miss them a lot. I'll be back.
I also thought the game’s big plot twists were too zany that it just took me out. 😆 which makes it even weirder cuz Shu Takumi wrote the story for PLvsPW…
It is my favorite game in the Layton saga. In part because it was the only one I owned for a long time and I've played it every year. I especially love the characters and even more the golden court second part. And the end is so stupid that I love it.
As much of a chaotic mess this game is, it’s my absolute favorite simply because of just how silly it is lol This game was the next in line when I was watching Professor Layton play throughs and man did I enjoy this one a lot, and also during the “Maya gets cooked” scene, Phoenix’s voice actor did amazing with the yell it kinda made me pause for like a while to register what happened xd All the plot holes and scrapped content like Evil Phoenix and Layton bum me out cause we’ll probably never see conclusions to them, but I still love this game regardless, even if it is super messy lol IM SUPER EXCITED FOR MIRACLE MASK REVIEW !! It’s my favorite in the series tbh, and the Norwell Wall was actually my username inspiration !
This game was my first ace attorney entry, and since then, i've become a huge fan of it (for 7 years). I cannot state how much this game, and this series have changed my life and i'm really happy to see people continuing to talk about it. Sure, it has flaws, the story is sketchy and it feels more like a Layton game- But it is really fun, and the bonuses with Edgeworth are very nice
Alas sadly with how Level 5 seems more preoccupied with running all their ideas through generative ai instead of releasing their games when theyre promised, I highly doubt Capcom will get the child support. I love this series but with how the trailers are looking I'm feeling quite bittersweet
Professor layton vs phoenix wright is so good ngl If they ever plan a new port please let it be professor layton vs phoenix wright i really want to know more about Gloria aka the queen of shadows
Yeah… this is the one Ace Attorney game I’d be totally fine with being forgotten into the ether. I played it as an AA fan and curious about Layton and left pretty certain I wouldn’t ever enjoy a Layton game. If you go into the bonus features, the characters talk about how there was tension between Capcom and Level 5 and a lot of what made Ace Attorney special had to be scrapped. This makes sense since this game has quite possibly the most jump over the shark endings of any of the AA games. Coming from a series where spirit channeling and spirit mediums exist to this game where they will be like “Of course Magic isn’t real duh. It’s Mass hypnosis!” Just left me feeling…betrayed for a lack of a better word after one of the earlier cases went to great lengths to be like “Magic is real duh. Don’t be stupid.” If people liked this game, that’s good. But I just can’t.
Witches aren't that crazy for the Layton series either. There's legends of mythical creatures and ancient civilizations that had futuristic technology. As well as current day stories having crazy technology, like huge mechs and automatons. A village of people capable of magic or a damn close imitation of it through science/channelling doesn't sound too crazy. Layton games to require some suspension of disbelief to enjoy but that's honestly what I love about them. I wrack my brain over the puzzle and my reward is getting to watch a cool story unfold. But even though wild contraptions are usually involved in Layton's stories, they've never been treated as an afterthought in quite the way they are in the crossover. I've never been bothered about possible plot holes in either of PL or AA series except for this one, they never explain the witch in London because there's no way to explain it following the logic they established. XD
Amazing video and edition. Came just into time, this year I played every Ace Attorney again and starting to play the DS Layton Games, in emulator because there is no other way.
Jesus, talk about perfect timing? I literally just finished watching a 9 month old playthrough of this game over the past week! oh, the AA resurgence truly is truly giving me life. Anyways yeah I loved this game but the 8 hour Final Trial (WHICH I THINK IS REFERRED TO AS AN EPILOGUE??) was like a test in how much bullshit an AA and/or Layton fan could possibly withstand
I loved this game, regardless of the ridiculousness, it was so good. I am prepared for it to never be rereleased, but glad I got it when it came out, physical (which I can't believe happened since DD & SoJ were initially digital only). However, the fact the previous two Professor Layton trilogies aren't already on modern platforms makes absolutely no sense to me
I fucking love this game - preorderd it when it was released, since I loved the Layton games and i really enjoyed Apollo Justice (the only game i could afford without selling my kidney) I was genuienly (?) shocked and scared at the first "burning" scene!
This was the first game I actually played in both series, so I will always appreciate it for getting me into both series. Ace Attorney is my favorite series ever now.
Always good to see a new voyan video! I'm so biased for these games, this one being no exception. While I'm still anxiously anticipating your Miracle Mask video (i can't wait to hear your opinion on that one's soundtrack), this was absolutely wonderful to get to see and i can agree that this twist was fucking cuckoo bananas 😂😂
I played it recently, because the library had it for rental which was good because I didn't want to pay for it. I'm a big Ace Attorney fan filling in the gaps (still haven't played Spirit of Justice, that's the only one left now), but I didn't like Professor Layton. Rented Curious Village when this crossover was coming out, and I stopped not long in because I didn't think the scattered puzzle types with no core gameplay similarity didn't make for a fun game. That's why I appreciated the puzzles in this one being much simpler, because while I still didn't like it, I could get through it for the parts I was actually here for. Still, the setting and story elements inherited from Layton just didn't fit in the comparatively more grounded Ace Attorney, so I came out happy I finally played it and content to never play it again.
When i first saw the announcement for that game (i was 9) i was interested bc i liked AA and the only person i knew who likes PL said it was very good I felt insane when i saw the plot
Without this game, I wouldn't even be a fan of Professor Layton since I've never even thought of playing the games as they came out and was way more into Ace Attorney. But now I've been going through the Layton Series on my *coughmoddedcough* 2DS and loving it so far. Currently finished the OG trilogy and The Last Spector, wish that the entire Layton Series and this game could be ported to the Switch especially with New World of Steam coming out next year.
A decade after playing, I’m still enjoying this game’s soundtrack, I feel like the Pursuit Theme should have gone over Maya’s death scene, it sounds very much like a witch’s fire being turned against her. Also it seems the name of the system this game invented is “Mob Cross-Examination”, judging from the name of the track that plays during that gameplay section.
This is straight up my favorite game on the 3DS. I like to pretend it's canon so whenever i replay the Phoenix Wright trilogy i always squeeze in a playthrough of this game in between Justice for all and Trials and tribulations. There's nothing in the narrative that contradicts the established canon of the main games so i can enjoy thinking it is.
21:16 I mean, if you remember the first game, or the trilogy in general, Phoenix almost never does the cases on his own, he always has some sort of guide so of course Layton always acts as this guide up until the end
Whenever I hear someone talk about this game, it's always someone who was a Layton fan first, or played both of the series before. I've always wanted to hear someone's opinion of this game from someone who's only done Ace Attorney before
Okay then. I thought it was really cool and mysterious when I played it. It felt so out of pocket and unique as an AA game that I was really intrigued and engaged. I was at once psyched to hear voice acting out of Phoenix and Maya and at the same time dissociated for the voices not being the same ones from the fan crossover Turnabout Storm (for Phoenix anyway, Maya was only in that for like 5 minutes out of its total 7.5 hours). It did get me interested in Layton and I got the Miracle Mask soon after which I didn't finish because of this one puzzle about number arrays during a flashback segment. Luckily I remain Unspoiled on that game even to this day. I think I need to look up the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.
@@JaelinBezel The movie is just filler between the 5th and 6th games, iirc you can find it on youtube unless it was taken down. Also, the crossover Phoenix voice was in my opinion the best voice acted Phoenix
I know it will probably never happen but I so wish the Layton Series would release on other consoles. Like the Ace attorney games... But lightning doesn't strike twice unfortunately...
Thoughts on the original Professor Layton trilogy being available in HD on the app store? (This is at least true on the Google Play store. They cost $10 each but that's notably less than any Switch port would conceivably be.)
"pretty decent defense attorney" phoenix has like, two confirmed losses in all of his cases and one of them was by choice. i'm sorry voyan but LOWER YOUR TONE you are talking about THE GOAT!!!
I've played and finished this game multiple times since its release and yeah it's a crazy adventure with huge nonsenses But I'm fine with that, I love this game despite its flaws, not only because its a crossover, but because of the ambiance of Labyrinthia, some underated NPCs and especially the soundtrack.
I've started my attorney journey on an emulator on my phone😂 gli got hooked then bought most of them on the eShop! I really love the vs game and I was just missing the miles investigations (since they weren't on the eShop and the physical is like 100$ 😮💨) I'm really happy it got remade!
@19:40 I'm pretty sure both the library and the storyteller's location is locked of by puzzle gates? I am also pretty sure that the game was written by the ace attorney team, no? Similarly, the resolution of this game is pretty in line with all other Layton games. They quite literally used hallucinogens, pretense, machines in all of the other games to explain what is going on. It is never fully logical and alwqys over the top. It's more about the emotional impact that these things have on the characters than it is about the technicality.
I swear, half the original characters for this game look like Fire Emblem characters, and the other half look like... Professor Layton characters... but I like to joke that they look like Fantasy Life characters
My favourite part of the ending is that it's a combination of the first 3 professor layton endings.

Klavier Gavin's underdevelopment in the series? One possible explanation: 🎩
I can’t help but be charmed by this game despite all of its flaws…but goodness am I very aware of them 😂
Also, great use of Hotel Dusk and (I think?) Trace Memory music! Going to check out more of your channel - great work on this :)
Seeing Another Code be referred to as Trace Memory feels cursed to me ngl.
If they really wanted to make a game deserving of the ace attorney title:
They would've made barnham relevant.
Wait a minute, this isn't Miracle Mask
I was in the middle of a GIANT swig of water when the prosecutor supercut hit and I spat water EVERYWHERE😂
7:58 "But not only is this game insanely long"
>he says about the shortest game in both Layton and Ace Attoney series
also 16:37 is the first appearance of Lettie Mailer, the best character in the game
in fact it is the longest at least in the Layton series, the only one longer than it is Azran Legacy
@@caprielazevedo nuh uh, every other layton game is longer than this one
@@AEC.1 factually wrong (except for the GBA part)
@@JackieJKENVtuberit depends on who plays it tbh, all other AA games took me more but all other PL games took me way less (the only one that came close was UF)
@@JackieJKENVtuberI think someone needs to take another look at the court record.
You can play the layton games on mobile! They are even remade in HD for the mobile version
@@Pixel-ar thanks for the info! I’d still rather have it on console but I might get them if that’s the only way.
finally this video has arrived, now all that's missing is a video of the other 3DS games so I can die in peace
Hey Voyan! I'm gonna need you to talk about every aspect of every Professor Layton game ever. Oh, and please hurry up with your next video! Love, viewer
I'm a massive layton fan and this is the only Ace Attourney game I have played or even own. I'm looking at buying Anonymous Code some time
same situation, big Layton fan but I love this game - very special to me even tho I never touched another AA game after
Gaspen Payne is not even on the list despite been in the mainline game
is absolutely gold
Still waiting for the miracle mask retrospective
With Mystery Room, this is the only Layton game I haven't played yet, and I am ABSOLUTELY LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAY IT. So, for the first time... I wont be watching your video. That's heart wrenching.
I'll miss your voice and Yo-kai Watch puns, voyan. I'll miss them a lot. I'll be back.
I also thought the game’s big plot twists were too zany that it just took me out. 😆 which makes it even weirder cuz Shu Takumi wrote the story for PLvsPW…
I just finished this game like a week ago and was disappointed to see you didn't have a video on it, perfect timing lol
Been waiting for this video. Love the game!
It is my favorite game in the Layton saga. In part because it was the only one I owned for a long time and I've played it every year. I especially love the characters and even more the golden court second part. And the end is so stupid that I love it.
As much of a chaotic mess this game is, it’s my absolute favorite simply because of just how silly it is lol
This game was the next in line when I was watching Professor Layton play throughs and man did I enjoy this one a lot, and also during the “Maya gets cooked” scene, Phoenix’s voice actor did amazing with the yell it kinda made me pause for like a while to register what happened xd
All the plot holes and scrapped content like Evil Phoenix and Layton bum me out cause we’ll probably never see conclusions to them, but I still love this game regardless, even if it is super messy lol
IM SUPER EXCITED FOR MIRACLE MASK REVIEW !!
OMG BABE WAKE UP VOYAN UPLOADED ❤❤❤🎉
Alas sadly with how Level 5 seems more preoccupied with running all their ideas through generative ai instead of releasing their games when theyre promised, I highly doubt Capcom will get the child support. I love this series but with how the trailers are looking I'm feeling quite bittersweet
Professor layton vs phoenix wright is so good ngl
If they ever plan a new port please let it be professor layton vs phoenix wright i really want to know more about Gloria aka the queen of shadows
That 10 witness cross examination is so ridiculous that the devs chose not to do something like that again in the great ace attorney lol
Don’t be stupid.”
If people liked this game, that’s good. But I just can’t.
Same
Witches aren't that crazy for the Layton series either.
However, the fact the previous two Professor Layton trilogies aren't already on modern platforms makes absolutely no sense to me
I fucking love this game - preorderd it when it was released, since I loved the Layton games and i really enjoyed Apollo Justice (the only game i could afford without selling my kidney)
I was genuienly (?) shocked and scared at the first "burning" scene!
Yeah layton got the 3d pokemon treatment
This was the first game I actually played in both series, so I will always appreciate it for getting me into both series. Ace Attorney is my favorite series ever now.
I really liked this game!
Bro called a 18 hour game long, it’s shorter than most ace attorney or layton games
When i first saw the announcement for that game (i was 9) i was interested bc i liked AA and the only person i knew who likes PL said it was very good
I felt insane when i saw the plot
Without this game, I wouldn't even be a fan of Professor Layton since I've never even thought of playing the games as they came out and was way more into Ace Attorney. But now I've been going through the Layton Series on my *coughmoddedcough* 2DS and loving it so far. Currently finished the OG trilogy and The Last Spector, wish that the entire Layton Series and this game could be ported to the Switch especially with New World of Steam coming out next year.
I invented a sequel series to the game called tales of Labyrinthia which follows the daily life of Espella and her friends
The quiz gave you Maya fey! It says “what are you a spirit medium or something”
That prosecutor ranking is vile lmao (and jsut entirely correct too somehow)
Mr. Game And Watch is number 4 prosecutor!?
Nah he's number 1!
Unrelated, but after 260 hours on Persona 4 and three save files, I finally discovered your pfp is ameno-sagiri after being subbed for years 😭
Your timing is impeccable
I stand by the statement that Layton vs Phoenix Wright is the best game in both series
I like your use of Attack of the friday monsters music. Good stuff!
10/10 video but why'd you make Layton so tall in the thumbnail XD my man's a short king
Hope all is well bro Connor sent me here 🙏 love from the twins! Earned a sub
21:16 I mean, if you remember the first game, or the trilogy in general, Phoenix almost never does the cases on his own, he always has some sort of guide so of course Layton always acts as this guide up until the end
WE ARE BACK WITH A NEW VOYAN VIDEO AYOOOOOO!
Professor layton also had crossovers in inazuma eleven even tough not as game but as player
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon music in the background? Yes please.
what this video is about according to the auto captions: Professor Leighton versus Phoenix Right
Whenever I hear someone talk about this game, it's always someone who was a Layton fan first, or played both of the series before.
Review Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva plsssssssss
I keep forgetting how fucking good the soundtrack is, I miss this game so much, and I wish they did a new one
Phoenix wright with puzzles just works so fucking good
I literally just finished this game, the timing of this video was amazing for me
I'm playing through all the ace attorney games on the 3ds and I will return to this video when I play this one
I only watched the intro coz i am yet to purchase the game but im already super hyped to play it
as far as I'm aware, this is the only professor layton game in which you can actually get a game over
I know it will probably never happen but I so wish the Layton Series would release on other consoles. Like the Ace attorney games... But lightning doesn't strike twice unfortunately...
Thoughts on the original Professor Layton trilogy being available in HD on the app store? (This is at least true on the Google Play store. They cost $10 each but that's notably less than any Switch port would conceivably be.)
yeah ive always wondered how the moving statues and hand print on the car in london worked xD
will you also make a video on the eternal diva?
This game is my favorite in both series. Maybe i'm biased becauses it was my first in both for me, but i still love both a lot
Another Layton video from voyan? Hell yeah
cant wait for the miracle mask retrospective in 2050
I loved it but I never really understood the London/witches part
"pretty decent defense attorney"
phoenix has like, two confirmed losses in all of his cases and one of them was by choice. i'm sorry voyan but LOWER YOUR TONE you are talking about THE GOAT!!!
Final someone talks about this game
I've played and finished this game multiple times since its release and yeah it's a crazy adventure with huge nonsenses
But I'm fine with that, I love this game despite its flaws, not only because its a crossover, but because of the ambiance of Labyrinthia, some underated NPCs and especially the soundtrack.
aww hell yeah so ready to start choking my chicken new Voyan Drop
''on every future platform''
Monster Hunter Fans: I wish that was true
I've started my attorney journey on an emulator on my phone😂 gli got hooked then bought most of them on the eShop! I really love the vs game and I was just missing the miles investigations (since they weren't on the eShop and the physical is like 100$ 😮💨) I'm really happy it got remade!
Bookmarking this bc I actually started the game recently and haven’t finished playing it.
The Plottwist was the biggest BS i have ever heard. It was so bad hahaha
False, best crossover ever jimmy and Timmy
Do a Hotel Dusk video damn it.
4:24 Godot theme song playing golf i guess
I swear, half the original characters for this game look like Fire Emblem characters, and the other half look like... Professor Layton characters... but I like to joke that they look like Fantasy Life characters
12:31 Do I hear Inazuma Eleven music?
You mean "let him bake"?
