Part of the reason why the Imperialists won despite being outnumbered was due to their more modernized army. They had minie rifles, more advanced artillery and even gatling guns. Choshu was noted to be the most modern army on the field. The Imperialists came out of the war far more modernized than the Shogunate ever was. In fact, the Imperials tended to be smaller, yet more modernized, on their march to Edo. The Shogunate did have modern units, but these were overshadowed by outdated levies raised by loyal clans as opposed to Satsuma and Choshu who had fully modernized their personal armies. Imperial troops were even recorded to have used American repeating rifles and breech-loading rifles. Aizu, in the beginning of the war, had way more traditional levies armed with pikes and spears and this was common in the shogunate camp.

Pilps two things my man 1. Looting is always better than Peaceful Occupation and 2. Use your ashigaru and their FOTS counterparts like Levy Spearmen to run toward the enemy's gates these units have firebombs they'll throw the bombs at the door by hovering over the door where a fire icon with appear click on the door and they'll burn it down so you can easily get inside so no more wall climbing and losing men you can also use it to remove enemy towers as well. Also, you have to get pretty close to the door for it to work properly but once it's ignited move your men back from the door till the job's done then move in.
The transition between shogun 2 and fots is so jarring in some aspects. Leaders go from wearing cool samurai helmets and armor to wearing a funny cone hat
After seeing Aizu were victorious and the Tokugawa Shogun survived the Boshin War in an alternative universe, the loyal warriors of the Aizu domain, those last true Japanese can now rest in peace.
You dont know pain untill you do a traditional units only, republic, legendary campaign as the Aizu. All things aside, traditional units are crazy good as long as you know how to buff them up and utilize them. Ive sometimes been able to get almost 1000 kills on a single unit of fully armoured+melee defence yari kachi during a siege battle by sneaking it around the back of a castle and climbing in. Since most modern units tend to have low melee defence, you can just slaughter them in most cases, twas quite a fun experience.
Well there's a _reason_ lining up a bunch of dudes with pointy sticks has been a big hit since like the early Sumerians... Hell, the bayonet charge still gets mileage occasionally these days.
Brilliant as always! You almost make me want to play FotS again, even though the first campaign I played in it actually kinda depressed me! ... Maybe a traditional playthrough would be less depressing from the "End of an Era and way of life" standpoint....

I used mods for Shogun 2 before seeing your work, but your vids made me really re-evaluate what a good mod order should look like for this game. I've had some of the best total war campaigns of my life playing on modded shogun 2 thanks to your inspiration. Even snagged that legendary victory achievement for the first time on a modded up campaign, which of course made it more difficult than if it had been done on vanilla. I would give it a more challenging feel because most other clans just feel the same when doing battles, the aizu was a welcomed change
20:19 I love using cannons in FPS Mode it’s like noobtubing in MW2 and it’s really satisfying to land those shots on a group of enemies during sieges.

It's amazing how well Shogun 2 holds up to this day. Yet another reason why it's the best Total War game of the franchise.
The last game to not use battle tables to ruin physical engagements. The last one with impactful military charges and less blobbed combat.
I can't imagine the fear of having to stay in a line while a bunch of people with spears charge at you while you have only a sword.
