I think the idea comes from Austin’s “The Master Plan” which was written up before 35 was created. The official document stated that all the black and brown people who lived in Austin would live East of this (eventual) highway. They weren’t allowed to live anywhere else in the city. Also fun fact: this area didn’t receive running water and electricity until around the 1950’s. The city put little to no money into keeping up the infrastructure and safety of this side of Austin. So while no Austinite may call 35 the “Berlin Wall”, there is a specific history surrounding just that. You can probably find the master plan online and read it yourself, it’s really interesting.
I've lived in Austin for just over 20 years, and I've never once ate at Franklins, nothing can be that good to make me wait that long in a line to eat it.

"Lower income E. side." lol you clearly don't live here. We have not found a way to co-exist between arts and tech industry. Rent is sky rocketing, pay is stagnant and we are all leaving bit by bit. I just moved. They also left out the rampant police abuse that happens there. There is no interest from the tech industry to preserve Austin itself. As they move in they're building there own areas and gentrifying lower income areas to also cater to them. There is currently a major battle happening over the last low income apartment complex on the east side. They're wanting to tear it down to build a luxury shopping district and oracle campus. I actually literally just moved out.
Austin was such a great town. I lived there from 2004 to 2018. It went from being a cheap, laid back music town to Silicon Valley, with expensive homes (that come with expensive property taxes), full of sky scrapers and high rise condos on any lot (usually built after tearing down cool old businesses/buildings who can't afford the rent). Now its a giant city, with suburban sprawl, that tries hard to insist its still 'weird', but in my opinion lost its culture, and uses the 'keep Austin weird' slogan to attract more companies. As it changed from music to tech, hippies to hipsters, and mega corporations like Google, Amazon, FB, Oracle, Apple, and many others set up shop, even Dallas became funkier than ATX.
Justin Mark not that true. Central Austin still has it’s cool culture. I’ve lived in the rollingwood westlake and lake Travis area my whole life. A lot different over by me.
I live here now and yeah you're pretty spot on. We're basically going through a tech invasion like San Francisco did in the late 90s and early 2000s. There's still plenty of OG Austin to be found but the housing prices are getting absolutely insane. A few more years and all the soul of the city will be gone unless the powers that be do something about the gentrification and cost of housing

+AwesomeCameras Won't anything concerning the city's culture be a de facto advertisement for whatever well-known events that it might have? Seems more like a reaction to not liking the video than a valid critique, since any spot on Austin's culture would be remiss to not mention an event that attracts so much attention...
SXSW is what really destroyed this city. The interactive festival us what brought all the tech and now it's just corporate radio buying up all the showcases?

FYI because I see comments about the Berlin Wall thing: I think the idea comes from Austin’s “The Master Plan” which was written up before 35 was created. The official document stated that all the black and brown people who lived in Austin would live East of this (eventual) highway. They weren’t allowed to live anywhere else in the city. @chillwill5080 In the summer, I think I might agree, it is like an oven. At least I'd rather be on the Texas coast or somewhere cooler. That said, if you look at a Texas summer the same way you look at a Michigan Winter then you can see my point. The Pacific Northwest is great for the summer and mediocre to miserable for the other 8 and half months of the year. Texas is nice for the other three seasons and you can always go swimming in the long hot summer. An old Texan, originally from the Midwest, once told me "You don't have to shovel sunshine."
as she said there is gentrification, the median income in Austin as of 2016 is $87,000 so if you make an hourly wage your going to have to have roommates or struggle here I know many ppl who make 30k a year and struggle and do not get to enjoy the festivals, Austin is a vacation city not a family city
0:38 lol more like the historically black and hispanic east side, mainly black where I was at. When I rented in that area I got some great history lessons from local business owners and residents including one of my neighbors, Bobby, owner of Swamp Daddy's cajun. He always welcomed me and included me in any community gatherings even though I was just a white boy similar to one of the gentrifiers. It really makes me sad thinking back on how that area has changed so drastically, and I can only imagine how the folks that grew up there and raised their families f eel about it.
This is what happens when a place natrually has a creative spirit. I've seen it happen in Sydney. The yuppies come & before you know it you can't drink booze during the day.
No, it sucked in 2008 also. It stopped being cool around the time GenX was being murdered in George W Bush's oil war brought on by the inside job known as 9/11.

I was 10 yrs old when we moved to Austin in 1975. Have to say, the video is right on target! This is Austin today, so sad, but true. Almost all of the great places and people are gone. I remember seeing some awesome punk shows at the Ritz Theater in the early 80's, B.B. King in the 90's. Could go on, and on and on, those were the days! The Continental Club and The Broken Spoke are the only two still standing in place. I now live in a different city. Austin changed, and not for the better. I am grateful I was there when it was the greatest and most unique place on the planet!
all austinites and others in williamson/travis counties who haven't yet: go up to round rock and TRY ROUND ROCK DONUTS! best stuff you'll get. longest lasting glazed donuts too
I grew up in Austin. Graduated HS in 95, then SWT in 2000. Left the place three years ago. It’s utterly astonishing how fast a bunch of rich “progressives” can ruin a beautiful city. I consider what happened to Austin to be one of the greatest tragedies of my life. I’ll never live in that dump again.
6th street the most significant idk about that. Elm street in Dallas where JFK was killed, buffalo bayou and all the refineries in Houston, westhiemer in Houston,NASA, San Jacinto monument, spindletop, wherever Enron was, Galveston got a lot of history from the birthplace of Juneteenth to 1900 hurricane. The point is there is more significant places than a street where college kids get drunk.
@ 8:34 "You're putting me to work?" You NEED to spend some more time in the kitchen. Don't even know how to properly peel a potato. Peel away from you, not towards you.
Surprised they didn't at least show the arch (even tho it's not on 6th) if they wanted to talk about homelessness/displacement in the city. Dave Starsign the video was made in 2016. A lot of things can Change in 2 years including the price of rent
Isnt that true of every major city though? Austin is the best city in Texas and probably better than many major cities in other states as well.
@@sfletch3042 kind of irrelevant, but my dad moved from Houston to Austin since he liked it better here and the people were better (he knows the city's changing now though since so many people are coming in)
"Lower income E. side." lol you clearly don't live here.
Everyone's headed East I'm assuming.
But now I live right next to taco deli at Barton skyway. It’s easy to bike around to downtown and it’s a lot of fun.
What city do you think is today’s version of 04 Austin?
@@bailey9fuk Nashville TN or Lousiville KY
I refuse to believe it takes me an hour to get somewhere that used to take 20 min. I will continue to be late. The traffic is a shit show.
i love the black woman restaurant owner
, love your work, keep it up babe :)
She could cook! Sorry to say it's closed now. Don't know where she went. She was truly a good person.
I looked it up! she moved to Taylor TX! go check it out, it's at a food mart in a shell gas station

Shes a parasite on Taylor...take her the fuck back
Same I was raised in the South East of Austin and I would sit on the corner just wait for her to come
Im pretty sure there was only 1 thing here actually on 6th st... And nothing west of downtown. Would habe been nice to see how different the neighborhoods along the street actually vary rather than a long advert for sxsw
+AwesomeCameras Won't anything concerning the city's culture be a de facto advertisement for whatever well-known events that it might have? Seems more like a reaction to not liking the video than a valid critique, since any spot on Austin's culture would be remiss to not mention an event that attracts so much attention...
What else would you expect from VICE
Welcome to my city
Showing neighbourhoods might entice more people to move hear, and we don't want that.
SXSW is what really destroyed this city. The interactive festival us what brought all the tech and now it's just corporate radio buying up all the showcases?

everyone who lives in Austin stays away from that street
Unless they have you ...
That drag woman was pretty hillarious, loved that bit
that's Christeene Vale, look her up! Dont get scared!
I'm from Austin and y'all made it seem so much different than what it really is.
watching this girl cut potatoes roflmao
+Minute27 Atleast she's cute.
More people need to move to Austin Texas. The air is clean, it's more liberal than San Francisco, and there are music festivals and parties with free booze practically every weekend. Come to Austin, stay forever!!!
you're joking
For the love of all that is holy please don't move here.
I live in Austin never heard anyone call I-35 the berlin wall
Austin is changing too much. It's not Texas anymore and becoming too much of a Little California
I’m from Austin. It is definitely turning into California.
FYI because I see comments about the Berlin Wall thing:
I can't argue with you about this, you are 💯 percent correct.
You are.. but once again I’m born and raised her. She said many Austinites call it the Berlin Wall.. not one soul calls it that. Her idea of struggling Austinites.. ha! This video is to try and paint a picture. None of this is true in this video. She’s just making a video. View view view.
Austin, TX has the best LSD
hahaha never heard 35 as "berlin wall"
Well I'm looking at austin for the past 8 month and from google maps i could immediately identify it as a economical divider. then when I when to Austin last week I was it first hand. it worse then I thought.
Yeah. What was that? Lol
that dudes rat tail is the reason of why everyone hates Austin
i live in Austin fuck this shit town
As a born and raised Austin citizen I just wanna point out no one goes to drag shows and we don't reference to the bridge as Berlin wall do she not fact check anything before she puts in a video
Don’t move to Austin. I live here. Please don’t
Terrible representation of sixth st. And I35 isn’t known as the Berlin Wall.
stuck on i35 for 2 hrs yesterday cause of sxsw. it's gotten way too big
FAhmad1782 so it brings revenue and it’s a beautiful festival I’ve been 3 times quit complaining bc if ur from a small town like Edna, Texas you’d be grateful that you have so much going on in ur city
Where’s My Vindaloo why’re you so angry calm down. It’s a UA-cam comment buddy
It's always the same story. Minorities creating things that are different from the mainstream, then it gets popular enough to attract a larger audience at which point it's no longer "weird" and everyone takes a turn bitching and moaning.
RIP Leslie.
J. Double U Yea :)
we left in 08..Very crowded now.
+MhadPhee Yeah back in the mid 90's I'd see him around Congress downtown doing his thang. Come to think of it, he was at the last Fugazi show at Emo's in the early 00's I remember. Always so nice. It wasn't an Austin trip unless you saw Leslie.
Westheimer Street in Houston should be covered Vice!
Ah the memories. J. Alfred Prufrock's Tavern was my home.
Dont forget mlk
I so agreee! Houston is way more deserving of a vice episode, and westheimer was way more going on than sixth...
Kenneth Stockton you've probably never been to Houston because if you live here you realize how beautiful the city is. the only down side is traffic
Kenneth Stockton where are you from
I'm from the Eastside Riverview and Selena St . born and raised and it's CRAZY How much is has changed sence the 80's 90's . It was nothing but Africans and mexicanos *it was the Hood* 😄 . love my City. This ain't know preview of the City
Did you mean Riverside? East Rivwrside is pretty rough indeed.
@@raelockletree3858 naw Riverview is a street down the street from Martin pool . Selena and Riverview. It is on the Eastside tho
@@jurado6335 you're right man. They never show the low income neighborhoods or homelessness. Austin is nothing like 20 years ago.
Unfortunately Nubian queen Lola's is permanently closed! May we all learn a lesson from that beautiful goddess of a woman and treat others with the compassion we wish to be treated with.
Yo I’ve lived in Austin all my life (17 years) and nobody not even me has called i35 the “Berlin wall” wtf. Also nobody move to Austin y’all are raising the cost of houses and rent 😒.
Its getting horrible ..there is lots of construction ..but its going to be unaffordable housing for the general population..to many damn hipsters moving in.
Austin is a legend in its own mind. It's mildly entertaining at best.
Not many places with decent weather, nature & amenities. The question for you is compared to what?
@chillwill5080 In the summer, I think I might agree, it is like an oven. At least I'd rather be on the Texas coast or somewhere cooler. That said, if you look at a Texas summer the same way you look at a Michigan Winter then you can see my point. The Pacific Northwest is great for the summer and mediocre to miserable for the other 8 and half months of the year. Texas is nice for the other three seasons and you can always go swimming in the long hot summer. An old Texan, originally from the Midwest, once told me "You don't have to shovel sunshine."
@chillwill5080 No rational reason to hate cold weather?...You're right, stay in Michigan with Whitmer. Good luck.
as she said there is gentrification, the median income in Austin as of 2016 is $87,000 so if you make an hourly wage your going to have to have roommates or struggle here I know many ppl who make 30k a year and struggle and do not get to enjoy the festivals, Austin is a vacation city not a family city
idk what you're talkin about. i live on my ranch in lexington but grew up in westlake. hell im in westlake rn.
This is not Austin. Austin sold it's soul to California back in the early 2000's.
🖤🌹KEEP CALIFORNIA OUT!! AND KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!!
Love & Respect,
Nic
The Austinite🖤🌹
Too late I'm already here in Austin 🏳️🌈💪.....soon Texas will be the gay state.... I can't wait for Texas to get rid of all the old school Texas ways
that drag queen couldn't hold a candle to leslie
+Gibbs Gaming One of a kind that one. Leslie WAS Austin. RIP
RIP LESLIE🖤✨💎✨
dude fuck leslie. That guy was a piece of shit nuisance. Real Austinites know that .
Don't come to Austin you won't like it here.
+Lenin Sanchez so true keep out!!! lmao
true
+Lenin Sanchez i know. it sucks here. lol.
austin sucks! Dont go. You will hate it. Everything terrible. Even cats are assholes there. :p
Truth. The artists made Austin what it is and now the basics want to come and take over and run it into the ground.
Austin sucks now. It was cool back in like 2008
No, it sucked in 2008 also. It stopped being cool around the time GenX was being murdered in George W Bush's oil war brought on by the inside job known as 9/11.
@@JustLikeHeaven77 Yeah you're probably right
@@JustLikeHeaven77 what I know for sure is that it's definitely at its worst right now.
I like his Bernie shirt
Go home! And y’all can’t drive!
“Alternative Austin’s hay day was the 1990’s.” Yes, Vice, let’s begin there. Austin definitely didn’t have an established music scene before then. 🙄
It was actually the late 70s and 80s, with the emerging hardcore punk scene.
My sister in law was attacked on 6th street. She was pushed to the ground and broke her wrist. Instead of "Keep Austin Weird" for their motto it should be " Keep Austin Safe".
I am grateful I was there when it was the greatest and most unique place on the planet!
all austinites and others in williamson/travis counties who haven't yet: go up to round rock and TRY ROUND ROCK DONUTS! best stuff you'll get. longest lasting glazed donuts too
Are they just gonna leave out all the graffiti and murals everywhere
God Vice sucks.
Craig Gibson , vice sucks ass...
I went to KMS across the street from Lola, she's one of the kindest/most inspirational people I've had the privilege to speak with.
Berlin wall? Been in Austin only 23 years, new to me. I35 is normally referred to using curse words.
Born and raised here in Austin. Proud as hell to be from here. They did not show Austin justice of what Austin really is.
agree
Damn the tech scene is ruining every city in the us into some soy boy vegan night mare damn just pick 1 city to ruin and have at it
I miss my hometown how it used to be
Five years later, 6th St. keeps going to be the breeding ground for crime.
I live in Austin. I don’t know this austin though
You notice how everyone says the city use to be great, affordable and they wish it could go back to how it was
please don't move to Austin
lukesyum why not? :)
@ 8:34 "You're putting me to work?"
You NEED to spend some more time in the kitchen. Don't even know how to properly peel a potato.
Peel away from you, not towards you.
That's why I live in San Antonio
San Antonio is becoming Austin 🏳️🌈
Surprised they didn't at least show the arch (even tho it's not on 6th) if they wanted to talk about homelessness/displacement in the city. I35 is generally called the parking lot or not spoken about at all, and that hopeful bit about the tech industry employing artists was frustrating to hear b/c of the amount of total bullshit involved.
Why didn't they mention Rooster Teeth?
Ohh Dear Austin. Our wacky culture and hatred for Californians
Full of hipsters, drunks, and homeless people.. I wouldn't go again.
Iheartjing I’m used to it 🧸🤠
I don't like my own city amymore
