- Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting - instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit. In this episode of City Guides we drive along Sunset Boulevard, stopping at venues and speaking with native Angelenos about the economic and cultural influences that have defined and transformed their neighborhoods.

For work I have to take buses from one end of LA to the other. It takes about 3 hours, I do it almost every day, and honestly I fucking love it every time. Watching this city unfold itself before me, and exploring it by foot whenever I can has always invigorated me. You definitely gotta get off sunset though, there's literally an endless amount to explore.
That sounds kinda nice, but does it never get boring? I've always wanted to go to L.A but i dont know if i'll be able to afford it

more people should know that the LA they see in the media is really a *tiny* portion of the city

Born and raised in Hollywood and sunset...this documentary was really spot on.The eighties were really awesome in this part of the city. So many places to go eat , party and relax.
80’s sunset strip looked a lot of fun. My pop used to be a rockabilly greaser back then and he and his buds would party all over LA and head to the strip as well. I’m a rocker myself but unlike my dad, I’m more of a metal head though I do appreciate Elvis, jerry lee Lewis and those guys for kicking of rock music in general from the start. I grew up listening to Mötley Crüe, Metallica, Led Zeppelin etc. Though rock music isn’t as big anymore, it will definitely stay alive with fans who crave guitar solos, attitude, blasting drum beats and headband their asses off to rock, metal, punk and the rest of the rock n roll family tree. Kids today will never know the total badassry but lol little do they know that they’re beloved rap and hip hop music all originates from rock n roll. Everything came from the blues, jazz, folk and even gospel music. What the music world is lacking is the progression and instrumental techniques of instruments in the industry. Sure these people today have their own talent but come on where are the guitars lol

@Thecapo Jimmyjones It's because they're young and don't have any reference points to know the difference between a movie studio that was founded in the 1910s, and a record company from the 60s. Apparently the building houses the Jim Henson company now. Don't tell the reporter or she'll be crediting Chaplin with the Muppets next.
The reason people are critical of gentrification is because it doesn't do anything to address the root issues of problems. All it really does is move the problems elsewhere. It's like shopping malls in that stay in an area that's profitable and then abandon them and move to the next lucrative investment area. It's like a city version of musical chairs. No matter where the music stops, somebody is going to be left without a seat.
+strangersound Are you sure? I'm not saying I like gentrification, but thinking about it, it would seem logical that it brings jobs, as the new residents have money to spend, so there will be more businesses. So some the older residents could find a job or a better job.
+Eric S The primary thing is you have one class/type of people coming in and in most examples, this is a higher class of people and the result is rents go up to a point where only the business class can afford them. And what jobs become available aren't that many and are the usual service/retail jobs that won't have the employees be able to afford to live in the community. Every case if different, and my comment is a generalization. Sunset Strip seems like it fared better than a lot of places. The New York (Bedford St) is a more extreme example of where gentrification completely prices out the people who live there.
It's a mixed bag. It's hard to argue with investment into communities that need it, with positive effects like reduction on crime, etc. But if it brings in a professional class of people, and the normal people get priced out and can't afford to live there, that hasn't helped them. They just end up moving to an area they can afford to live in, which usually has the same issues the old neighborhood did. The investors end up desiring these areas because they can get property for pennies on the dollar and end up making a huge profit. It's not really about helping a poor neighborhood, or bringing in jobs, it's about turning a poor neighborhood into a wealthy one. So this is more like exploiting a bad situation for gain, rather than trying to do some good.

I stayed in Brooklyn (Jamaica Ave.) for a week about a year ago and I could see the gentrification myself. Around Jamaica Ave. there weren't a lot of white people, but as soon as you get to the Barclay's Center you see more and more. I'm white myself, just so that there aren't any misunderstandings about racism or such.

Cool documentary. I'm from London, and obviously we hear a lot about LA, but we get the impression that it’s either glossy Hollywood or gangsters in Compton, so it’s really interesting to get an insight into all the different influences on the city. I visited before, but I was really confused as it wasn’t what I expected and it felt quite unwelcoming as it’s so sprawling and diverse. But watching this makes me want to go back and explore more.
The significance of the Ostrich Farm to Sunset Bouelvard is more than important than most know. For one the route of Sunset from downtown through Echo Park and Silver Lake is directly attributable to the Ostrich Farm Railway (built between 1886/1887) which ran on the same route before the street existed.

I loved all the interviews! It was a glimpse into various lives and values and I felt like it depicted everything that I’ve seen in LA - when I was visiting family, being a tourist and even lived there. I think with most bigger cities in Ca, one loves parts of the history and energy these places give us but hate the unfortunate parts of its reality; gentrification, gangs, the blue mafia, racism, etc.
I loved watching this. I'll never forget my first trip to LA, and I am beyond excited to move there. Great work VICE!

Sunset =/= Los Angeles
Sunset is tourists, hipsters, and the rich folk coming out of the hills to slum it. The real LA doesn't exist on an iconic street. It's in the neighborhoods that never appear on TV. And it's all too diverse to go to one neighborhood say, "this is LA."

I was riding my bike on Sunset right where Beverly Hills turns into Hollywood. I look over at the 1950s Chevy convertible, and I see the passenger is David Lee Roth. I said "hey Dave," and he looks over and says "hey man" as the light turns green, and they drive off into the Sunset.

Most of Los Angeles is ghetto and the nice parts are so expensive to live, most leave California if they want to buy a home, but the tv and film industry continues to show only the pretty places as though that is most of Los Angeles.

Cities like my hometown L.A and New York, always feel endless......These Megalopolis's are so huge, that even if you've been to a spot, it can honestly feel like a lifetime since you pass it once again and yet you can pass by a spot everyday, but it always feels like you can never engulf it's colossal size in one drive or one trip. I miss the size of the city, but also am glad to be out of it in the same sentence.

Went to La 1 time walked the city met a cool car detail artist he showed me around a bit. At first i felt kinda uneasy. But in reality the people besides skidrow were passive and mellow and carefree and open. Beautiful girls in summer dresses with smiles on there faces. Normal conversation. . Nice ocean weather is in the city. Alot. Alot of sweat shops making clothes and other items. Mini stores everywhere. If you got money. Its got nice people who are relatively open. No filters.
I grew up in LA starting 1958. I lived in Brentwood before the San Diego Freeway went thru the Santa Monica mountains, it was being built. Went to Olivara Street as a kid. I love latino culture, its part of me. The only problem has been illegal immigration and the influx of gangs and drugs.

A really well-done piece that I thoroughly enjoyed
Boyle Heights is the current gentrification “frontier” and the push-back is community based, not some gang thing. The thing about LA is that it is so vast, a place like Echo Park is just a drop in the bucket. There are still a fair number of working class homeowners who will, in all likelihood, eventually cash out for millions. A great place to buy 20 years ago.
This is wrong. Wilshire is by far the most important street in LA.

Crenshaw can't compare against Sunset because Sunset runs from the the oldest parts of L.A. and it runs through at least 9 neighborhoods that range from poor to the very rich and it ends at the OCEAN.

I have lived in Echo Park since 1974. I'm glad the Echo Park Locos can't afford to live here. Good riddance. And I approve the gentrification of my neighborhood: new restaurants, new businesses, a cool mix of people, and a safer neighborhood. It hasn't "lost" any flavor. It has just added and changed it. hear hear long live Echo Park.

Sad that every time some one talks about LA they say echo park is the east side WHEN THERES AN ACTUAL CITY CALLED “EAST LOS ANGELES”. Just like in almost every video you stood right at the edge of the actual east side and leave us out of the what makes this city run. Such a disappointment AGAIN. Thought vice would be different but actual east los is ALWAYS left out.

L.A. isn't a city like NYC, Chicago, SF, or Seattle. It's interesting that they focused on the historical Sunset Blvd. stretch of land and while this is technically within the "City of L.A." millions of residents that live in L.A. county work and play all over the Southern California region. This documentary makes it sound like L.A. culture only revolves around Echo Park, Hollywood and Beverly Hills which all have their own scene, but there are literally hundreds of other enclaves they didn't cover.
Amoeba Music moved to Hollywood Blvd in late 2020.

that may not make sense on the surface but these minority officers have to operate under ORDERS given to them from a racist police chief and city hall.. If they wanted to keep their job they had to do what they were ordered to do. It meant proving they could do their job even if the orders had bias and racism interwoven into the directives.

Please. How the fuck are they different from Starbucks when their prices are worse than Starbucks? Doesn't matter if it's a married couple running a business, if they're pricing out the population or specifically creating a business that doesn't cater to the locals, and instead only to the influx pop or tourists, then wtf is that? Starbucks is annoying as a chain and slightly more expensive than a small drive through hut, but they're nothing compared to these trendy little spots. At least I can roll into Starbucks without worrying about judgement or a dress code.
