I feel like Karen and Chad think the term “dungeon master” is a job title, and therefore can’t wrap their smooth brains around the idea that this particular DM might be doing this for free for his private friend group

Yeah, if the event probably mentioned that the store is going to have "expert/professional/experienced Dungeon Masters" or something along that vein, I can definitely see a misguided parent thinking it's something you need qualifications for. Also, Karen's "that doesn't sound like the game I read about" seems like she thought it's something like Monopoly or Risk where the story comes from rules, so the OP's explanation of the game being rated R and being heavy with its plot would have sounded like he's either not playing the right game or the game right, or that he's gatekeeping her son on a "ew, kids" basis.
      Still a grade A douchenozzle.

This has to be one of the most depressing stories you've covered, not because of the horror itself, but because of how it ended. At least with the vast majority of other stories, there's some sort of happy ending, even if it's as simple as "the problem player was kicked out" or "the players left the awful campaign". Here, however, this can't be classed as anything other than a complete downer ending - the players and GM were forced to stop their campaign right as it was about to reach its conclusion, the Karen and the store owner got exactly what they wanted with zero repercussions and the neuroatypical kid was still stuck in an unhealthy situation.

Any reasonable adult will realize that when something is described as "R rated" it is not for children. As for the new owner, it should be illegal to monetize AL events. My husband and myself volunteered to be DMs as we had 20 kids show up every week and there was no way 1 DM was going to cut it (we had 4 DMs total). The weeks went on and certain kids wanted certain DMs; but with every group there is always the problem child, literally. I had a child that would throw a fit when they didn't get their way (when a roll failed, missed an attack) and my favorite: when this kid was talking they wanted the whole table to be completly silent and focus on him. (These are kids ranging from 10 years old to 17 so attention span is short) Eventually we had to get the kids parents involved and well.... let's say because of these parents we aren't able to do these weekly D&D sessions anymore. But maybe im just a cynical asshole and it happened exactly like OP says.

That's fair, but I've had an experience with people getting upset at me when I was younger when they've mistaken me for a store employee, I tried to explain I can't help because I don't work there and don't know how to help, and they've gotten really pissy with me and... I don't even know, assumed I was lying or something? People are wild.

Also, when I hear OP saying his group got pretty loud, I presume it's more in the way of several teenagers talking to and over each other, and getting progressively louder, not that their RP was necessarily loud for the sake of being loud. • @CatacombD

Most game stores allow people to reserve tables in order to run private games. The idea is that, just like with card games, if you provide a space for people to play, they're more likely to buy stuff from your store and, even if they don't, having an active store attracts more customers. In fact, every MtG launch event I've attended has had at least one private dnd game running in the other room while the launch event filled the tables in the main room. It's a sign of a healthy store.
It sounds like there was a miscommunication, where either the old owner didn't make the new owner aware of pre-existing reservations, or maybe the group just assumed that their old recurring reservation was still good. I'm assuming the former, because, from the sounds of it, the new owner didn't even have a DM lined up to run that table; He just mistakenly assumed that anyone running dnd at the store worked for him. If he did have someone lined up to run at every table, then they wouldn't have been able to plop down and claim the table. Some employee would've gone to setup there, or already been setup there when they arrived.
As for whether or not the group should be covering sex acts with their roleplay, well, again, it was a private game, and they claimed an isolated table, so no one has to listen to them who would be uncomfortable with their actions. Also we don't actually know how explicit they were being. If it was just, "We bang everyone in the camp, and then get ready to disembowl some orcs!" then fine. If it was, "And then he slides his hot, glistening member inside her tight....." etc etc, then, sure, that's not appropriate for a public location.

@@CatacombD I think it was equal parts miscommunication and also the group having always laid claim to the one table that wouldn't be used for a big Adventure League-style group for an event. OP calls it out as being trashy, starting to come apart in places, and with barely enough room to seat the four of them (with basically no leg room, implying that it was narrow *and* short), in comparison to the larger, nicer tables that occupied the majority of the gaming floor. It's why their group always used it: because nobody else really wanted to grab it.
And at the 4e launch event, most people would either be people who'd played 3.5e, and were coming to sample the new game, or newbies coming to sample the new game, who would probably be able to tell that the books on OP's table weren't the new ones, since 3.5e and 4e books are super-different at a glance. So they again would've been ignored as "not what we're doing today," by anyone except this possibly neurodivergent kid who just saw an open seat at the table, and his Karen mother who didn't know what any of this was really about anyway.

Or how he dramatically pulled out his acceptance letter to the college to prove his intellectual prowess to the Karen? or a manager that didn't have a clue as to who his actually employees were and unprofessionally threatened to fire an employee in a crowded shop (Defamation and managerial harassment aka lawsuit)? Or the fact that the "new Owner" who obviously "could care less about gaming etiquette" was hosting a tournament and didn't bother attempting to explain that they were having a private game and wasn't part of the tournament, especially when the proper thing to do would be to designate all the tables for that night to the tournament and not letting private games take place in house that night, especially since it was a "rated R" game and the tournament seemed to be for all ages (so PG at best)? From the sound of it, the employees were tied up running the tables, and probably knew the group and had of course left them to their business knowing they were going to use the back table no one else used. The owner was new and probably didn't know these teens were just regular patrons because it sounds like they'd missed a few sessions while OP was prepping to head to uni, so they weren't aware of/present for the change in ownership any more than the new owner was aware of his store's regular patronage. Heck, sounds like the new owner probably thought that D&D was only ever played in big events like this, rather than in a casual capacity, so it's unsurprising that he didn't expect anything but people coming for this launch event.
As for "taking up space while an event was going on," it sounds pretty damn unlikely that this table would've been used for the event. It was pointed out to be kinda falling apart, and only big enough to seat a group of 4, which is basically useless at a big event like that where you'd want to be able to seat large groups in order to be able to run as many people through a module as possible. 4e modules in particular are mechanically scaled for a minimum 5 players, so you'd need a table that seats 6, at the very least, to run one.

That Karen really makes me angry. The entire ordeal could have been avoided by her just talking to people like normal humans do. Instead she technically assaulted that DM, made racist remarks towards him and got him thrown out of that games store for no real reason while at the same time causing all kinds of psychological trauma to her neuroatypical kid and making sure the kid could still not play the game. GREAT JOB, MAM!

The clarification was made at 5:32 through 6:10 that the orgies were not between the players, only the characters due to the uncanny luck it seemed to bring everybody's rolls. Just an in-game ritual. Just saw some people say they could d&d at home if they had the space for orgies and noticed it didn't hold up as an argument.

I empathize with the mother, who probably has to fight to make sure her kid is included in activities, but at the same time I can't understand people fighting so hard for something when they're so clearly in the wrong.

@@thegreydragonangel2836 Things that seemed odd to me is that the Karen came over to their table instantly angry that they wouldn't let her kid play, even though her kid never went to tell her that there was a problem. She could've overheard what was happening but since the OP describes the shop as being the busiest it's ever been that seems unlikely, and if she was standing close enough to hear I would've thought that the OP would've noticed her and questioned why a woman was watching them. And then another thing that was weird was that Chad didn't know that the OP didn't work for him. I mean sure, he was new, but game stores aren't that big normally so it's not like he would've had to memorize dozens of employees. Of course he could've just been an idiot, but it's just fishy. And then there were lots of little things that weren't really "damning" but were still just odd, such as the OP being really close to his friends, but they didn't know that he was moving across the country? While none of this stuff proves that the story is fake, it makes it seem unlikely to me.

@@thegreydragonangel2836 The party was at least half female, the OP was tall, well-liked, and was supposedly sexually active with his players on an implied frequent basis, and just got his other-side-of-the-cointry college acceptance letter, yet none of them could find a private place to play. Furthermore, there was never any issue with them including sexual violence in their game in a public space in the store until then, and he was planning to wrap that up _while_ the store was packed with a bunch of new players and kids during a big event.
While Karens certainly exist, the depiction of the woman and new owner (who was unfamiliar with all of his employees or how to even verify in a _game_ store, which usually have a very small staff size) is highly dubious in light of all of the former. The store was simultaneously sufficiently organized to rum a big launch event with a lot of employees active running games (which would be both a freakishly large staff size for a gaming store, let alone in Smallville, and expensive to run that many employees at once) under the new management, yet not organized enough for the new manager to even verify whether someone was an employee?
Most of that setup was not even relevant (or at least far more detailed than necessary) to the horror story. This whole thing is overflowing with unnecessary self-aggrandizement, sketchy circumstances, and completely sets up the OP as a Gary Stue.

gonna be honest this sounds a lot like r/thathappened, with the OP having a group of friends since kindergarten that they knew in a biblically. Along with a game shop that allowed them to have a R rated campaign is frankly unlikely as is was the Chad New owner. this story seems completely made up

I think what makes this sound super fake to me isn't that the Chad owner didn't know how DnD works but that this guy would automatically align with one non-paying customer versus three paying ones. Like even if he thought op was an employee that's still two paying customers that he kicked out for nothing.

Crit Crib lore being expanded right here.
On a more serious note, it always seems to me that kids with some kind of mental or neuro disorder often seem to have mothers who are unnecessarily protective and aggressive. While you can chalk it up to stress and constant pressures of having to look after them (my brother has severe mental disabilities, and my mum is very similar in many ways), I still find it completely unacceptable to act like that. The kid was clearly scared by it. I also feel bad for the DM, alway sucks not being able to wrap up a fun campaign, and having an important moment like that ruined just makes it worse.
