A E Housman was in my opinion, the greatest, most brilliant person who ever lived. An unrivalled, undisputed genius, the like of whom the world never saw, before or since. People criticised Housman, they said he was arrogant; if so, he is the only person I could ever forgive for being arrogant - if I had had his gifts, I would be arrogant, I would be sitting on a cloud in the sky. He was a brilliant Latinist and interpreter of ancient texts and author of A Shropshire Lad, the exquisite poem which foresaw the First World War, published in 1896. An extremely private, but astonishingly gifted man.
