My Dad worked at Raytheon when ST first aired in 66. Like all 60's engineers, he came home from the bar just to watch ST where my brother and I sat with Dad and watched ST quietly. Jump ahead to the late 80's and I'm running an R&D facility with a bunch of engineers who stop work when Next Gen comes on. The entire place comes to a screeching halt, especially when the Borg are introduced. The weird thing is that I wanted to watch too and the engineers were like my kids.
Again, great to see Dorothy singled out for her contributions. Having worked with her on a couple of projects I can see how her strong belief -----usually voiced with diplomatic but VERY firm, persistent conviction ----in certain ideas (and visa versa) could be- highly influential on any project.
Credit should be given to the Czech film IKARIE XB-I and Ib Melchior's un-produced STARSHIP EXPLORERS project as inspirations for Roddenberry's idea to produce a show like TREK. The film and Melchior's very STAR TREK-like premise proceeded the actual show and created a template that would worked nicely as a continuing series due to the endless array of possibilities.
Dorothy C. Fontana was graduated from my high school about 10 years before me. I never knew this until years after Star Trek was played as reruns. This video didn't mention that she also wrote "Tomorrow is Yesterday" where the Enterprise was whiplashed back to the mid-1960s where Captain Christopher had to return to Earth and the Enterprise had to return "back to the future".
I had the coolest STTOS experience in Ticonderoga, NY. They have an awesome TOS Enterprise set tour. It’s a labour of love for the creator. So real. Shatner has been there several times. Highly recommend it. Parmen

The Enterprise from TOS was the most honest & simple design of all of the Enterprise variants throughout all series & films.
After'The Motion Picture", the Enterprise' design got more & more contrived.

I heard that a lot of people rate Assignment: Earth as one of the worst episodes. I don't know about that, but it is a bit awkward since it's a backdoor pilot.

People who have never acted on a stage or a screen have NO IDEA about dynamics on a set. All this stuff about feuds is just hooey. There are always tensions, there are always fake feuds that gossip mongers start, and they have absolutely no clue what is really going on. To hear what some people think was going on - nothing would have gotten done. Also...This guy has several mistakes here that don't coincide with several published accounts. Also, in TV shows, actors always protect their characters - they're the only ones who can. oh...Shatner was a producer. It isn't officially recorded, but wincing from the 50% Jack Lord had demanded to play Kirk, and with Shatner very much in demand at the time, Roddenberry, NBC, and Desilu provided Shatner with a percentage and the authority that in those days, stars had. Although not explicitly stated in publicity, Shatner acted like a producer on the set because he was, and when there were issues with creativity or production, he would meet with producers - especially in the third season. This has been the source of a lot of bad publicity for Shatner, but he was simply doing what he had been given leave to do. Proof? No one stopped him. He was, obviously, doing his job. He also, by all accounts, kept the tone of the sets light. (P.S. All the actors appreciated the table reads, and Shatner says that a director (I believe Daniels) was the one who originated the idea, and everyone liked it - it sped up production. READ THE DAMN MATERIAL, DAN! Nice accent, though. But these posts are not dependable.)

@@trackman174 That's not a stupid question. There are, in fact, two answers. For Star Trek, they set up a table for the actors and director to work on lines while the crew was setting up lights - usually, that doesn't happen. So performances could be honed more quickly. This sounds like common sense, but it was unique in practice at the time. "Table reads" in general means any time a cast gathers around a table to read a script, usually for the first time. For Star Trek's table, lines would have been learned, but that's not always the case.

General Question: my wife and some others say they have trouble watching TOS. They say the colours on screen make them hate to watch it. I have heard this from others. Anyone else?
What about the colors do they hate?
To say that Shatner and Nimoy shared equal responsibility for problems on set is absurd.
Shatner is an egotist and a bully who continually played mean practical jokes on Nimoy. Check the famous issues with Nimoy's bicycle.
Shatner also lacked empathy and tells a "joke" about how insensitive he was about DeForest Kelley's daschund considering it not a "real dog" next to his dobermans that he brought on set all the time.
To say it was an equal problem between Shatner and Nimoy is not exactly accurate particularly as the other cast members all had issues with Shatner but knew they could go to Nimoy for help with the show if they needed it. See their books to learn more.
Nicoles was not being paid as much às Takei or Koenig and Nimoy got that fixed he also famously refused to voice Spock in the animated series unless Nicoles and Takei voiced their characters as well.
Shatner didn't care about anything or anyone but himself.

I really enjoy these videos, but I wish you had checked with the portrayer of Chekhov: his name is not pronounced "KOH-nig." While I saw one online explanation that claimed it was "Kuu-nig", that would be more or less according to Dutch rules of pronunciation, and Walter Koenig is of Russian-Jewish descent. He himself pronounces it "KAY-nig." Sorry to be picky--but you know how ST fans can be! 😉
Kinda' mindless for actors to argue with producers, like customers arguing with a store... the customer is ALWAYS right!!!

Assignment Earth was plodding, tedious and barely a TOS episode. In no way is it in the top 4. It's not even in the top 4 of Teri Garr back door pilots.
