I understand that you are a little bit confused by their looks. But this band is so much more than a gimmick. It's a lore! They started, as you said, 2006 as a doom metal band. But instead of screaming and having very difficult music, they made songs with a foundation in ABBA and the 70's and 80's rock.
The main character, Papa Emeritus, has evolved numerous times and is now Papa IV. As he said from the start of this video, it's a song that his Papa used to sing. In this context, Papa Nihil, is supposed to be a song written in 1969.
I can guarantee you that you will have quite a yourney with this band if you start to explore them. I will recommend you to listen to Cirice, Dance macabre and Rats. Some songs are heavier but always with splendid musicality and underlying tones of a darker side! Good luck! 😊

@@BritPopsReact If you're wanting something that sounds more inline with how they look check out "Year Zero" and "Con Clavi Con Dio". They're both older tracks that are a little harder and more doom metal.
As mentioned above, there's a narrative that runs through each album, both in the albums themselves and then "around" the albums. So as the lead singer character has changed so has the style of the music. Papa Emeritus I was really hard and heavy. Gradually the Papa's and their music, became more "poppy" in order to become more accessible to a mainstream audience. So, now that we're at Papa IV, formerly known as Cardinal Copia (which is a fantastic pun name), he's a lot more flippant and whimsical. In the lore, this song was originally released in the late sixties so it's meant to be more psychedelic and sexy.
The closest comparison I generally make to them over all is Blue Oyster Cult. When you first hear their name you think they're going to be dark and evil. But when you listen to them you realize they have some darker and more mature themes, but their music is surprisingly light and upbeat.

You need to start at the beginning to understand the Ghost "Lore". This tune was supposedly released in the 1960s, of course it wasn't. They're a lot of fun, and have a lot of gimmicks, but have the musical chops to be able to pull it off.

You've managed to react to two of Ghost's more "pop-rock" songs. If you want to hear some of the more "metal" side of Ghost, you could try Faith (from A Pale Tour Named Death), or Mummy Dust, or Year Zero, or Ritual, or Elizabeth.

This song was released in 2019 as a supposed re-release of a 1969 record called 'Seven Inches of Satanic Panic'. It is none of the kind, of course. Hilarious. All part of the lore. They have MUCH heavier stuff. But it is all super-catchy.

The founder has stated that he grew up listening to bands like KISS and Alice Cooper and that he had grown tired of doing the regular rock band thing and wanted to make the whole thing a bit more theatrical and fun, so even if some of their songs don't match their looks the idea is just to embrace the concept behind the band and play along while your dancing along in the crowd.

The song is almost certainly about trying to make it in the music business with your friends and failing... but appreciating the journey. It is kind of amazing to me how people ignore the majority of the lyrics to focus only one one bit of the chorus.

    I knew this was Chuey's Mama's request!!😂
I'm not real familiar with this band so I cheated and looked up the lyrics and meaning.
Well, from what I could find the band won't nail down an actual meaning.
The lead singer(I believe) said it can be about how friendships can change us in different parts of our lives.
Or about how Mary Magdalene was judged to be a prostitute when in fact she wasn't.
So her cross to bear was going down in history as something she wasn't.
Orhers believe it's about Marijuana because of some of the lyrics they interpret that way.
The song apparently blew up after a slow down version was used on a compilation of Stranger Things on Tik Tok.
    I liked it!😊
It does sort of have an 80s vibe to it.
His makeup I think is a cross between Gene Simmons and Alice Cooper!!!😂
    Looking forward to hearing more.
    Nice choice Cheuy's Mama!

    @_SledgeHammer_ 8 місяців тому +4

Hi again BP1 and BP2 🤘 You have been tricked to listen to two of the poppiest songs that Ghost have.. Very good songs, mind you, but Ghost is sooooo much more than this.. They play a lot of different styles of music.
The band has a huge lore that takes more than a commentary field to explain.. The only permanent member of the band is Tobias Forge. All songs are written by him, or co-written with other contributors. For the studio recording sessions he uses different people than the ones who are contract based live musicians who he brings on tours.
Now, to some of the lore that probably will put some of your confusion as ease.. Behind the band (according to the lore), is the "Ministry of Ghost", controlled by a group called "The Clergy" who in the late 60:s early 70:s wanted to push the satanic message through rock music. The lore says they formed the band back then, and the band released a couple of songs namely "Kiss the Go Goat" and this one, "Mary on a cross". (Marijuana cross, tongue in cheek) Thus the 70:s feel of the song. With the Marijuana angle in mind, take another look at the lyrics and see if the lines "We were speeding together down the dark avenues", "But through all the sorrow, we've been riding high", "And the truth of the matter is I never let you go, let you go" and "If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that"' now has a different meaning? Tobias is a mastermind when creating music, and writing lyrics with double and even triple meaning.
Now, back to the lore again, the response to the songs and message of the songs were not what The Clergy wanted, so the band lay dormant until they "reformed" (according to the lore) in Sweden in 2006. They "re-released" (again, according to the lore 🙂 ) these two songs on the "Seven inches of satanic panic" single in 2019, for their alleged 50'th anniversary. The bands first lead singer back in the day was Papa Nihil, the legit father of the 3 first Papa Emeritus characters.
For each album/tour cycle there has almost been a new lead singer of the band. To avoid a lengthy explanation about the rise and fall of the different, the first cycle ("Opus Eponymous" album) Papa Emeritus I was the singer.. For the second cycle ("Infestissumam" album) Papa Emeritus II was the singer.. Third cycle ("Meliora" album) Papa Emeritus III, fourth cycle ("Prequelle" album) Cardinal Copia, and latest cycle ("Impera" album) Papa Emeritus IV. All characters portrayed by Tobias Forge.
All live session musicians are called "nameless ghouls". In an interview, Tobias did estimate that somewhere around 15 different people have performed as ghouls all through the cycles.
Enough of that .. I don't want to recite the whole lore.. There are a lot of ways you could continue this Ghost journey.. I'd recommend you check out a variety of their songs to get more into what they are all about.. I strongly recommend that you check out some of their other material, as I said.. you have now listened to the two more poppy of the catalog.
To balance these two poppy ones I'd recommend that you check out some of their more heavy stuff, like "Faith" from the "Prequelle" album, "Cirice" (Grammy winner), "Mummy dust" or even "From the pinnacle to the pit" from the "Meliora" album, "Call me little sunshine" (Grammy nominee) or "Hunter's moon" from the latest album "Impera"... More into the slow ones? Check out "He is" from the "Meliora" album, the beautiful "Life eternal" from the "Prequelle" album, or "Darkness at the heart of my love" from the "Impera" album. Feel like dancing? Do "Dance Macabre" from the "Prequelle" album. (The setting for this one is also "back in the day" according to the lore, featuring how Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator first met) 🙂
And to totally throw you off of the "you think you have figured witch genre you could fit Ghost into"...
Try "Twenties" from the "Impera" album for some serious, serious metal reggeaton.
Remember... if you have Ghost, you have everything. 😉🤘

You two remind me of the guardians of proper reality reacting to the Alice Cooper band in 1971 and Kiss in the late 1970s. There is a difference, however, between you and them. Those moral gatekeepers had no idea there was anything other than pop rock/power pop/hard pop rock, etc. And then there was Peter Gabriel era Genesis.

You gentlemen need to go furthur back into their catalogue and check out their earlier material. A little heavier, a little more of a serious vibe, but still tinged with that vintage feel. That 70's vibe. It's funny because it evolves with each album. Always top notch though.

Some good ones to check out: Square Hammer, Dance Macabre, and Kaiserion (reminds me of Rush), or if you like heavier music, try From the Pinnacle to the Pit and Mummy Dust. Or in Rush's case, any damn lyrics at all!!
All that really matters in the rock world, is getting a song that gets hot women out on the dance floor and guys buying them drink after drink.

Normally you think about music like slipknot and so on.. but what would be more clever by the devil to use songs that everybody is singing along to. It is fun because there are church choirs that sing Ghosts song.. I am not sure they even think about the lyrics that often is some sort if love song to the devil. Ghosts song has many layers and meanings.. but the biggest layer has always been this king of worship to the devil.. and that why all the ladies is dressed like nuns.. not christian nuns though :)
