what attracts me to this band is how different and catchy they sound, and tbh their sound matches their gimmick more than one would think. after all if you met the devil himself he would not threaten you or scare you, he would be out to convince you that he is your friend, your ally, the one you can come to seek help from.

Yea, that's what BC stands for traditionally, but I remember Tobias (when he went by "Special Ghoul") said that they didn't have the rights to use simply "Ghost" in all countries. It was a marketing and copyright thing where they had to add something onto the name so they could use it. Tobias is really comedic minded, so he did "BC" as "Because Copyright".

Welcome to our family. You know if you have Ghost, your have everything ❤️. As yours friend says there is so much to discover and if you keep listening you will find your own favorites. A quick summary is that the first three albums are a little bit heavier, more metal and devil vs god. The last two is more Stadium Rock oriented and has themes. Prequelle is about the black plague and Impera is about the rise and fall of empires. And one thing. Ghost is not a band. Ghost is Tobias Forge. The people you see in the Jimmy Kimmel video is paid musicians. Tobias has used the same people for the last two album tours. But they don't play on the records.

Tobias Forge has admitted as well that his main thing is guitar, he says he isn't all that great at the other stuff, but his vocals, bass, everything is crazy. He also records drums and keys and stuff, but he has two pro players in the studio to take his demos and record them cleaner for drum and keys.

Welcome to the clergy! Well this will probably be a little block of text on the songs youve covered, a bit of lore and some song suggestions.
As others have rightly pointed out, this band in reality is a one man band, Tobias Forge whom I feel is one of the best songwriters of the decade to enter the metal scene in particular, the band now is heading for a massive arena sound and stage with the latest album Impera. Mary on a Cross has done some good with bringing in new fans of the band recently and will be the only time I really appreciate the app. Tobias has played 5 characters so far in the band as the lead singer, Papa Emeritus 1, Papa Emeritus 2, Papa Emeritus 3, Cardinal Copia and Papa Emeritus 4. Each era has a very different sound, making Ghost hard to catagorise into one specific genre.
Opus Eponymous, the debut album is very much Doom metal and really focuses on guitar work.
Infestissumam, more focused on a prog rock sound with that heavy Doom metal vibe still there.
Meliora, falls more into classic Heavy metal sound and is the last of the albums to really have clear satanic church themes in the writing.
Prequelle, more pop rock sounds but still has its heavy classic Heavy metal sounds in there, has a few more ballads the satanic themes are there but are more undertoned.
Impera, very stadium rock with again classic Heavy Metal vibes, more ballds than Prequelle such as Darkness, which you heard here and once again the satanic themes are undertoned throughout although a bit more open that Prequelle was.
There are a few EP's mixed in which are mostly covers of other bands, the big one here though would be Popestar which debuted Square Hammer, the first song that really allowed Ghost to become less underground and getting them onto the bigger stages, Prequelle only bolstered that by effectively creating a gateway into metal for those who enjoy Rock.
Singles include Seven Inches of Satanic Panic which are the two '1969' re-releases including Mary on a Cross and Kiss the Go-Goat, and the first ever release they had, the Elizabeth single which released before Opus Eponymous holding the Demo versions of Elizabeth and Death Knell.
To summarise the lore, Ghost is the front for a Satanic Church whih Papa Nihil began back in 1969 before the band dissapeared for years until they re-emerged in 2010 with Opus Eponymous. Papa's I-III are his sons and each lead they're own album before being either retired or voted off from the position by the Ghouls, the exception was Papa III who was dragged off stage for his failures to reach a global status by Papa Nihil all his sons were then killed due to their failures to be made into ornaments for future tours which you can go and see with a VIP pass, Cardinal Copia was given lead position of the band at this point as Nihil's right hand man who led the band to great success with Prequelle with the aid of Nihil playing saxaphone on one of the songs on set, ultimately he died on the last performance of The Ultimate Tour named Death which promoted Cardinal Copia to Papa Emeritus IV but he was not finished, Papa Nihil was resurrected on stage to perform his part on the recent Imperatour and has remained as a Ghost ever since. There have been references and subtle hints that Cardinal Copia is actually Nihil's son but Nihil himself doesn't know that and while not explicitly confirmed, the hints are not small as shown in recent chapter videos. This adds more to the fact that the bloodline has not been broken for millenia according to Nihil.
The Ghost Chapter videos and other small clips are really helpful to explain some of the lore and ongoing practices within the Clergy and I would highly recommend you give them a watch. The previous chapters were under names such as the summoning, just go to the official Ghost channel to take a peak.
For the songs you have listened to I'll give some brief info on what I understand them to be aboout if I know personally.
Mary on a Cross is actually about Marijuanan more explicity and working together with friends to progress and become better, this was stated by Tobias Forge in an interview himself.
Square Hammer is about freemasonry more explicitly, hence the name Square Hammer and generally references the initiation to the Freemasons.
Call Me Little Sunshine is about reaching out to the devil when you need him most, Little Sunshine and Mephistopheles are other names for the Devil himself.
Darkness at the Heart of My Love is just a ballad, one of the few on the album Impera, I personally do not know exactly what undertones there are in the song but can again be attributed to reaching for the devil and how he will never leave you.
    Album themes are as follows:
Opus Eponymous, the conception birth of the Anti-Christ.
Infestissumam, the takeover of Earth and the early life of the Anti-Christ.
Meliora, God has abandoned Earth to Satan and the world is left changed forever.
Prequelle, God's wrath through the Plague and people coming to terms with that as they start to die off.
Impera, The rise and fall of Empires.
The Ghouls are just hired hands for the stage in almost every case and the ones you see live are not necessarily the same as you may have seen before. Their live performance is fanstastic and well worth seeing.
Do try to watch the official videos if available for the songs, they contain lots of information which you may find interesting.
Note on the B.C name, yes it was for copyright reasons in the USA and literally stands for Because Copyright, but is also a play on Before Christ, it is only really seen during the Infestissumam Era.
Song suggestions, Con Clavi Con Dio, Ritual, Elizabeth(try for the 2010 single release, it's a bit more raw but sounds overall better than the cleaned up album release IMO), Year Zero(yes it is censored on youtube but only for nudity, the song is unchanged otherwise, would really recommend pulling up clips from Imperatour for the live performance however, its fantastic), Ghuleh/Zombie Queen(very proggy and the song that got me started with the band), Cirice, Zenith(a hidden gem, only released on some boxsets and discs for Meliora, but it holds a very evil tone and does summarise what Ghost is all about in the early days), Rats, Faith, Imperium/Kaisarion and Bite of Passage/Respite on the Spitalfields. For the last two here, the songs are paired up since they lead into each other nicely as designed on the album so it really is a must to listen to one after the other.
There is one more album I didn't mention here, the live album Ceremony and Devotion, great recordings from their setlist in various locations from the Popestar tour. The Infestissumam songs are perfomed better live than the actual album due to som small mixing issues with the original album, record comapny forced Tobias to rush the album and he has said himself he's not all thaat happy with the final release of the album.
I think I covered everything, apologies for any typos, my laptop is lagging badly atm, I'm gonna go give it a restart for an update and rest, otherwise hope you enjoyed this Ted Talk :).
PS, I own all the albums barring the EP If you have Ghost on records and they are well worth it if your into that kind of thing, most of mine are limited releases of varying colours. :)

The thing about Ghost is that they're so recognizable. Once you listen to like 3 songs, you will be able to recognise any of their other songs, and they do it without being repetitive somehow. You should've included ritual and I believe in this because it shows more range while these songs are mostly somewhat similar.
I also do have to say that the band is still anonymous, it's only the lead singer that revealed himself(Tobias Forge). Everyone else in the band is and will always be anonymous, they call them "Nameless Ghouls", and usually you can tell them apart from their body compositions. The most popular of them is Fire Ghoul, and he's recognisable because he's a short and skinny dude, he looks almost like a kid. The only Nameless Ghouls that are known were past members.

Actually, Mary On A Cross was modeled after the 1960’s… the lore for the band says the song was released in 1969. It was released in 2019 as a “50th anniversary” of the song.

  • @jonasmandersson
    @jonasmandersson Рік тому +14

It’s correct in a way when you say that Mary on a cross doesn’t belong. As the story goes, MOAC was recorded by Papa Nihil in the late sixties and re-released 2019 if my memory serves me correctly.
The lore is a big part of Ghost, you see. Every album sees a new Papa Emeritus take over from the previous, which also makes it possible to do some musical changes from album to album.
The latest two (Prequelle and Impera) actually has the same singer even according to lore. Papa Emeritus III was dragged off stage during the last concert of the Meliora album tour, and the Clergy (Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil first and foremost) appointed Cardinal Copia as new lead singer for Prequelle.
On the last concert of the Prequelle tour, Papa Nihil died on stage during his saxophone solo on the instrumental song Miasma, and this meant that Copia would become the new Papa Emeritus IV and continue to do the Impera album and tour.
No one really knows what will happen to Copia/Papa Emeritus IV, but it is heavily suggested that his days are numbered and he will probably be killed off and replaced at the end of next years summer tour.

And love the theatrical aspect. He uses a lot of words and analogy to make it seem to be about religion. When in reality. It's about Man. And mankind. Real life.
What is he whispering? Well, it's: Come to me, Pleasure me, filling me, obsessively, Agressively, Respectively, Pleasure me, Agressively, patiently.

I know I’m late and someone probably already let you know this but Tobias Forge, the lead singer, IS Ghost. The whole band is effectively his project and the album is recorded by session musicians and there are deferent musicians that go on tour with him. At the end of the day Tobias is the only one getting paid for album sales, merchandise, etc. and all the “Faceless Ghouls” are just paid for their time.

I am honestly so glad you reacted to Ghost, its in my top 3 favorite bands together with Sabaton. I did actually have the fortune to see them live here in Stockholm when they played at an amusement park that also hosts music shows. I saw them around the time that their album Prequelle had come out and the show itself was absolutely amazing. Papa (their singer) is really good at entertaining a crowd and even though the evening kinda sucked at the end when trying to exit the park the show itself was golden and I would love to see them again but preferably at a place that is actually made for music concerts. Also about the song "Darkness at the heart of my love" while it's not obvious a lot of their albums tell a story. For example Prequelle tells the story of a plague and what a man will do to keep his loved one alive. And while I'm not 100% certain I believe Impera the album Darkness is from tells the story of well, an empire. I really do hope that you will consider reacting to more of their stuff as I honestly think that their music along with their gimmick is rather compelling. Oh also on the comment about how one of the songs sounded like it belongs in an 80's horror movie I have to say that's kinda bang on. And while it's a movie that came out recently they have a song called "Hunter's Moon" that appears in one of the new Halloween movies although I am uncertain if the song was written for the movie itself or not as I think the song appears on Impera but was not a available song before said movie came out.

    Oh,and Little Sunshine?
The song is actually referencing Aleister Crowley (the English occultist) with “Little Sunshine” being one of the names he “humorously” called himself.
BTW,..every tiny bit of that music, and all the videos released for Ghost are overseen by the lead singer,Tobias Forge. He dictates how everything sounds and looks. The band members change occasionally.

I was able to see them live for the first time at the end of September, and it was easily the best concert I've ever been to and will likely ever go to. Because they're all portraying characters on stage, they all have distinct personalities and so many great interactions among each other. They're a joy to watch.
Some of my personal favorites when it comes to their songs are "Year Zero," "Spillways," "Griftwood," "From the Pinnacle to the Pit," "Cirice," "Zenith," "Witch Image," and "Life Eternal."

Ghost is fantastic, if you can get by the faux satanism act. Became a fan last year due to the Metallic Blacklist release (which also introduced me to The Warning). Saw them in Toronto in September - great stage show. My favourite track is probably Cirice, and my wife likes the more 80s-rock tracks like Dance Macabre and Rats. The official video for Square Hammer shows that they don't take themselves very seriously. Very fun band, lots of variety.

Ghost's sound is old and new coming together. A young guy and an older guy making music together, which is really how it all started with the lead singer and a friend. Start from the beginning and work your way through their catalog. Mary on a Cross wasn't a single from the EP six inches of satanic panic, it was kiss the go goat, there's a video for the song and it explains what went wrong with the band in the late 60's.

So, I have actually tried to figure out what the Ghoulettes (female Ghouls aka background vocalists) are whispering into our ears, and to me it sounds like:
Either "listening" or "pleasure me" lol. Most likely the latter, given the context of the other used words and knowing Tobias Forge (the lead singer lol).
    Followed by:
    Willingly
    Obsessively
    Aggressively
    Possessively
    Pleasure me?/listening
    Fantastically
...and something I don't understand as clearly.
Maybe this helps somehow, but don't worry, it's generally a little debate in the Ghost fandom regarding this part of the song.
Also, generally speaking (for the other songs), there's usually more to the lyrics than what meets the eye. Every single album has a theme and there's loads of historical and religious background information that explains the songtexts. If you are interested, almost all song meanings were covered by the Genuis Lyrics website. Plus there are songs that are more metal than others (for example Con Clavi Con Dio, Year Zero, Mummy Dust, Faith, From the Pinnacle to the Pit, Twenties, Elizabeth, Spirit etc. If you're more into that.) But they usually mix it up pretty good in each album, ranging from rock & hardrock, to metal.
Looking forward to more Ghost reactions, since I absolutely love everything about this band.

  • @IRanOutOfPhrases

Great vid, I hope you'll engage with this band a bit more, and maybe touch on some of their heavier songs. Year Zero & Circe come to mind in particular. Maybe even take Stand By Him off the first record to see where they first came from.
One thing I'd say (of most songs) is that there can always be room to interpret songs however you feel about them. I don't know there has to be a right answer. So some of my thoughts:
    1. Mary on a Cross - I never heard the nun thing before, so that's certainly interesting. But yeah, I'd say pops here nailed the general theme pretty accurately (as it certainly fits with the nun thing, right?) I've seen a lot of people link the phrasing of "mary on a" to "marijuana" and this being a love letter to weed. I feel like there's also room in here for the actual singer to be talking about his career in general. Travelling hard for so long and not getting anywhere. And the idea of no longer "following the rules" by changing his entire gimmick up and suddenly finding big success through controversy. And obviously very easy for us to relate to in our own struggles on our own journey. Its even further enhanced by the fact that it has a 'retro' feel to it, making you feel even more nostalgic about those times. Side note: I feel like this song is a direct relative of Iron Maiden's Wasted Years for that theme alone. Both kinda implying a lot of the same things in that regard.
    2. Square Hammer - Pops again is pretty on-it. Its either a video or a magazine interview somewhere, but Tobias Forge (real name of lead singer) says they wrote this song with the intention of being suitable for large arena play. They were quickly becoming a more popular band, taking on bigger gigs, and he felt they needed something 'bigger' to play in these larger arenas. He envisioned it as an opener, but lately it's been used as a closer.
    3. Call Me Little Sunshine - Got nothing to add here. Just a chill song that delivers.
    4. Darkness at the Heart of My Love - A really interesting one. Love the 'ethereal' sounds in this one for sure. Pops once more is probably closer to what the song is 'supposed' to be about as far as the original, literal intentions. He was right to be weary that it's not as simple as a standard love ballad. If you look closer at the words, there are certainly some 'red flags' there. It sounds 'beautiful' but he's saying he's reserving the darkness of his heart for you. You know, the bad part. He's not really saying you're making the darkness in him go away. He's saying his darkness is for you. Near the end its pretty confirmed to when he says, "And all this time you knew that I would put you through the darkness at the heart of my love." Not great! But like I said, songs can always take on multiple meanings. And I feel like the goths here would be able to find this as a love ballad written for them (with darkness actually being good.)
Anyway, Ghost is great. Following my message of "songs can always have multiple meanings" I feel that a lot of Ghost songs are particularly great at that. Especially since their gimmick always has the 'official lore' meaning, but there still is an actual more meaningful message that we can still relate to. Like watching a musical/opera where they're clearly singing about the plot, but at the same time you can still make it relate to your life.
And even better, this band is really hard to pigeon hole into any specific genre. Even when they go "metal" they bounce around from subgenre to subgenre. Helps keep them fresh.

21:30 they did that with Dave Grohl at one point, the old drummer from Nirvana and front man for The Foo Fighters. He played guitar with them at some point although when is unknown. The original Ghouls in the band lead a lawsuit against Tobias because they basically weren't satisfied being anonymous and saw the whole thing as a band, which it wasn't. They were hired musicians who were paid well. They did not succeed in the lawsuit because the whole project has always been solely Tobias, he writes everything, creates the lore and the ideas, the only "Band" aspect is that he needs people with him to perform live. The first band members came out and had there identity out there through the lawsuit, so over the years Tobias has had people sign contracts to not reveal that they are members of Ghost and that the group is solely his. He is upfront about it and pays well, but he wants it to be clear that in Ghost, they are a musical unit, not individual famous rock stars. Although every Ghoul adds their own flair and personality to the group through their music and stage antics. The current iteration of musicians he plays with are all known publicly, we know who they are and what they look like, they aren't trying to force anonymity anymore, but they still don't openly discuss to the public that they are members. All the Ghouls here are talented people with their own musical careers but under this theme they are anonymous, and you won't know who they are unless you dig a little bit

Darkness at the heart of my love is about how religion alienates you from your loved ones (when the summer dies severing the ties) in the name of being faithful to god. Why would you need other people if god is always with you giving you his love?. That's the darkness that the song talks about, the isolation and separation you suffer as you devote your life to religion. It seems sweet but it's something that runs deep, cold like the song says. It's almost like a love song but once you know the meaning it's creepy which is how cults make you feel the first time you interact with them.
It's such a good song. You should listen to Cirice which is very similar in concept and lyrics to this one.
