It's honestly annoying to hear Cristina Vee's voice as Shantae. Her lines written in Shantae HGH took the cake, though, as they feel childish and stupid. Feels nearly bizarre. To be fair, Cristina fits better as Risky Boots and Tuki.
It's really great that you took a crack at Shantae. A lot of people take for granted how much of a struggle this series had to go through to get the popularity it has now, it's one of the many reasons I hold this series with so much respect and I'm glad you covered it so eloquently while relating it back to the character. I don't think any other video game character can take Shantae's spot as my favorite
Admittedly, this is one of the reasons I tend to support her being included in Smash. Though Shovel Knight may be considered the face of Indies, Shantae is generally not that far behind, largely due to her being one of oldest indie characters to have existed (Or at least a precursor), her long history with Nintendo consoles, and overall the struggle her franchise had to go through to get to the point where she is in terms of popularity.
Sgt Wolf I created movesets of like 3-4 variations even back when smash 4 had DLC content. There’s SOOO much to use as her move set. Plus I’d be cool to see a magic character with long wind up smash attacks via transformations and fluid air movement.

I'm drawing her a lot atm and I can safely say that I love not just her design, but also the design of the others. All the characters in Shantae have such a creative and awesome design. Things like Sky's egg shaped earrings, Rottytops' skulls, Bolo's headband and bracers, it all fits so well to their character!
I've actually met Shantae's voice actress Cristina Vee, and I asked her how she was introduced to her role as the voice of Shantae and where it all started. I even have a video of her Q&A event from Fan Expo 2019! Now this might sound kinda cheesy or cliche or something, but it really felt like I was meeting Shantae herself in person! Now I'm not just saying that because she was literally the voice of Shantae. She had the same funny, charming, enthusiastic, lovable etc vibe as the characters she plays! Then again if you're familiar with Cristina Vee's work and the untamed talent she possesses, then I don't really need to explain much. If you ask me, having Cristina as the vocal representation of Shantae is like a match made in heaven!

For a little fun fact, Shantae's particular style of belly dancing appears to be Oryantal Dans; which, yes, originated in Turkey. It's, of course, not to be confused with Raqs Sharqui, which translates into the same thing, "Oriental Dance." Raqs Sharqui is the one that originated in Egypt, and while being more energetic and the dresses more flashy and revealing than Raqs Baladi, it still isn't as energetic as Oryantal Dans, nor the dress as flashy or revealing as the Turkish style. As for wanting to romance the green girl, all I have to say is, "Of course." Or, should I say, "Of *corpse.*" XD
Having recently replayed it alongside RR and SatPC, it is a slog to play through but so much more full and interesting, so I definitely think it would be in WayForward's best interest to try and modernize so that their newer dev members and planners know what to shoot for (especially since the full Metroidvania structure got more pushback than expected...).
I would really love to see wayforward spruce up the original game, but what I can see them doing is something similar to half genie hero where the game is easy, but you can unlock a challenge mode once you beat the game

Many people haven't realized this, but back when Nintendo Power was still publishing magazine articles they always have a segment where they talk about underrated games that have been published on their old systems. Shantae for GameColor got the spotlight for that segment in one of their issues. Because of that, many people who recognize the game or were vastly interested got WayForward's attention which was enough to give them one last chance to get Shantae in the green. I haven't seen a female protagonist as appealing as Shantae, and its not just her being sexy... color, theming, and overall design is just darn good...
Her short fuse makes perfect sense in context, many of her friends and neighbors are pretty much magnets for weird problems and complications, and it's her job to fix all that stuff XD
I always like the sense of humor the series had. It was like banjo kazooie levels of charm, just reading the interactions shantae had with everyone. I'm glad Shantae had a second chance in life. :3

13:19 this reminds me of how early Kirby games were NOTORIOUS for releasing towards the end of a console’s life cycle, particularly when their successors were already out. One particular example that comes to mind is Kirby’s Adventure, which came out on the NES in 1993 despite the SNES being out for three years already.
Just finished Seven Sirens today and had to come back to this video. One thing about the games that keeps me interested is that they _never_ feel old or worn out or like its "just another dungeon crawler". There is always something cool going on and the art and sound design live up to it. It's definitely one of those games that gives you that sense of urgency that we look for in video games. We also cant forget about the booby temple
Shantae is actually getting one of her old sequels revived. Shantae Advance was a sequel to Shantae that was supposed to come out on the GBA, but was canned for one reason for another. But now it's getting its development finished and releasing on the Nintendo Switch.
Shantae is my favorite indie character of all time and her series is one of my favorite platformers of all time. Now, if only we could get more info on Shantae and the Seven Sirens (and more easily available official Shantae merch)...

Best birthday gift so far! Like many people, I started with Risky's Revenge; I heard about it from a GameStop ad of all places and been a fan of the series ever since. I still hold on to that "Shanate for smash" thing since the intro made by Studio Trigger and hope she gets a slot despite people saying "she not in, she's a spirit".
I've played every game in the series, and I agree with pretty much everything you said (also Rottytops is quality). And I know it wasn't relevant to the video, but man the OSTs for all 5 games are incredible. I hope WayForward continues to maintain the quality that the franchise is known for.
I love your analysis on one of my favorite indie darlings. Your bit on her first game really helped explain my own thoughts on her success despite a rocky beginning.
Female characters with sexual designs & traits are usually either weak & pointless to the story or have personalities that are at odds with their design/mannerisms but Shantae has none of those problems. She does sexy dances because she likes it, she dresses how she likes to, she's tough & determined, the world doesn't fold in on itself to stop her from accomplishing anything, & she's confident & energetic enough for it to all feel consistent. It also helps that she has abilities that are triggered by her dancing so it makes sense that she's acting that way in battle. It really distinguishes her from all those female characters in other fiction who go into gun fights or sword fights barely clothed while all the men around them are in full armor. She's also not one note. She has nuance like a real person. She's able to be sexual in some ways without being sexual in all the possible ways. Normally, a female character is 1 of three things. 100% sexual all the time, romantic all the time but never sexual, or so devoid of romantic or sexual traits that she could be asexual for all anyone would know.
Got the GBC original at the store way back then. I fell in love! And now, I buy every games at release. Shantae was saved by digital distribution. No longer is a publisher mandatory for the release of a game. I'm thankful for that.

Shantae is probably my favorite female character in gaming, so often in games, female characters are given hyper-masculine traits. Shantae is allowed a girl and a strong character because of it, not despite it which is what you often see with the strong female character trope.
As a diehard fan, I was a bit skeptical when you mentioned you hadn't played any of the games, but you have given one of the best analyses I've ever seen about this series! You hit the nail straight on the head here, man.
I gotta say, the art for these videos is usually pretty good already, but the Shantae piece in particular is great! It’s so vibrant and shiny! I love it. That insight into the similarities between the things that both the character and her developers go through in universe/real life was a pretty intriguing point.
One thing I've always liked about Shantae's design is that it doesn't feel too fanservicey. Like, even though we never see this girl with her torso fully covered, it doesn't feel like that choice was made to draw in horny gamers to drool all over her. Her attire feels completely appropriate for her character and the game's setting, and it would be jarring if she wore anything else as her main getup

I have seen her pop up here and there and she was on the back of my mind but didn't invest but now listening about her and her story, you have intrigued me where I want to personally check her out, thank you Digi. I became a fan of you since you gave justice to Knuckles and Amy Rose, where other dissed them, where you actually explain them and with your segmented on Shantae, I am very much glad I have follow you. I started knowing about this character thanks to Pirate's Curse but I never played the games, but when Half-Genie Hero came out I was having a strong need in playing the games, and good luck came to me last year and noticed that Limited Run Games was doing a port of Pirate's Curse for the Nintendo Switch so I pre-ordered it before it was gone. I played it on April or May of this year and I fell in love with the game, it's very charming and I love Shantae and the many characters I met along the way. And from that day I became a fan of the series and I beat the game, it was challenging but not unfair and it was fun. I can't wait to finish Half-Genie Hero and play the fifth game, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your thoughts on the character and because of that I'm now subscribed to your channel. 😊

I’m so glad i picked up half-genie hero when i did. I hadn’t really heard much about her until that game, but learning how bumpy Shantae’s past was but Wayforward pulling through anyway really is inspiring. Can’t wait for Seven Sirens.

You probably know that Shantae: Half-Genie Hero have 2 DLC and a few months ago was released Shantae and the Seven Sirens. And there's animated cutscenes, but I don't tell anything more. Anyway I'm creating OC and I didn't know that colors was so important to character and balance between them. Well Shovelknight's creators are a group of former employees from Wayforward, the company that owns the rights to Shantae, so it's not out of the question. 🤔
I find it also interesting how her struggles technically keep happening as well. Shovel Knight released around the same time as Pirate's Curse (who Yacht Club Games were original WayForward Employees), so Shovel Knight took a big spotlight and during the Half Genie Hero Kickstarter, it was released during a major kickstarter…. Might No. 9, so she was competing against the kickstarter that ended up raising $4 Million. Honestly though, I think despite these struggles, she seems to keep pushing forward getting a bigger and bigger audience each time, and if The Seven Sirens does well, I hope she gains even more popularity. and obligatory, I want Shantae for Smash... I hope she makes it as one of the DLC in the future.
I found Shantae thru Risky's Revenge and fell in love. I wanted to play the original, but was floored by the cost. Fortunately, it hit the 3DS eshop too and I've played every game sinse. Easily one of my favorite series.
I love the shantae series i found the series in the form of shantae and the pirates curse(it is free on xbox if u owened live gold) randomly like a year ago and it ended up becoming in my top 3 favorite games I love this series and can't wait for the 6th game:)
I haven't played either game but I do think it's a shame that in the indy retro gaming scene, she's completely overshadowed by characters like Shovel Knight.
Being a Game Boy collector, the first game has been on my want list for years. But regardless of whether I find a copy or not, I've played the other games in the series and adore them! The writing of the games are just great to put it bluntly. I'm very glad Shantae had a chance after the GBC.

I knew of Shantae's presence through UA-cam and other media. It wasn't until I finally got into the series recently due to Steam's game sale and loved it as a platformer! When i do get into a different series i usually watch analysis videos about and i really enjoyed yours DiGi!~ :D

Her short fuse makes perfect sense in context, many of her friends and neighbors are pretty much magnets for weird problems and complications, and it's her job to fix all that stuff XD

13:19 this reminds me of how early Kirby games were NOTORIOUS for releasing towards the end of a console’s life cycle, particularly when their successors were already out.
One particular example that comes to mind is Kirby’s Adventure, which came out on the NES in 1993 despite the SNES being out for three years already.
I never thought there'd be a perfect way to sum up everything we love about Shantae all at once, but it looks like you've proven me wrong.
Shantae is just one of those characters that is so underrated, yet so popular at the same time.
Just finished Seven Sirens today and had to come back to this video. One thing about the games that keeps me interested is that they _never_ feel old or worn out or like its "just another dungeon crawler". There is always something cool going on and the art and sound design live up to it. It's definitely one of those games that gives you that sense of urgency that we look for in video games.

Shantae is actually getting one of her old sequels revived. Shantae Advance was a sequel to Shantae that was supposed to come out on the GBA, but was canned for one reason for another. But now it's getting its development finished and releasing on the Nintendo Switch.
Shantae is my favorite indie character of all time and her series is one of my favorite platformers of all time. Now, if only we could get more info on Shantae and the Seven Sirens (and more easily available official Shantae merch)...
Thanks for making this video about Shantae. She's always stuck around in my mind for almost the same reasons as yours. Recently I watched some clips and if she were real, is someone who I would easily want to be friends with.
Best birthday gift so far! Like many people, I started with Risky's Revenge; I heard about it from a GameStop ad of all places and been a fan of the series ever since. I still hold on to that "Shanate for smash" thing since the intro made by Studio Trigger and hope she gets a slot despite people saying "she not in, she's a spirit".
I've played every game in the series, and I agree with pretty much everything you said (also Rottytops is quality). And I know it wasn't relevant to the video, but man the OSTs for all 5 games are incredible. I hope WayForward continues to maintain the quality that the franchise is known for.
I love your analysis on one of my favorite indie darlings. Your bit on her first game really helped explain my own thoughts on her success despite a rocky beginning.
Female characters with sexual designs & traits are usually either weak & pointless to the story or have personalities that are at odds with their design/mannerisms but Shantae has none of those problems. She does sexy dances because she likes it, she dresses how she likes to, she's tough & determined, the world doesn't fold in on itself to stop her from accomplishing anything, & she's confident & energetic enough for it to all feel consistent.
It also helps that she has abilities that are triggered by her dancing so it makes sense that she's acting that way in battle. It really distinguishes her from all those female characters in other fiction who go into gun fights or sword fights barely clothed while all the men around them are in full armor.
She's also not one note. She has nuance like a real person. She's able to be sexual in some ways without being sexual in all the possible ways. Normally, a female character is 1 of three things. 100% sexual all the time, romantic all the time but never sexual, or so devoid of romantic or sexual traits that she could be asexual for all anyone would know.
Got the GBC original at the store way back then. I fell in love! And now, I buy every games at release. Shantae was saved by digital distribution. No longer is a publisher mandatory for the release of a game. I'm thankful for that.

Shantae is probably my favorite female character in gaming, so often in games, female characters are given hyper-masculine traits. Shantae is allowed a girl and a strong character because of it, not despite it which is what you often see with the strong female character trope.
Yeah, I don't recall much female protagonists like that in any games I've played, except maybe Heather Mason.
As a diehard fan, I was a bit skeptical when you mentioned you hadn't played any of the games, but you have given one of the best analyses I've ever seen about this series! You hit the nail straight on the head here, man.
I gotta say, the art for these videos is usually pretty good already, but the Shantae piece in particular is great! It’s so vibrant and shiny! I love it.
That insight into the similarities between the things that both the character and her developers go through in universe/real life was a pretty intriguing point.
One thing I've always liked about Shantae's design is that it doesn't feel too fanservicey. Like, even though we never see this girl with her torso fully covered, it doesn't feel like that choice was made to draw in horny gamers to drool all over her. Her attire feels completely appropriate for her character and the game's setting, and it would be jarring if she wore anything else as her main getup

I personally haven't playing any of her game, nor heard of any of the games. I have seen her pop up here and there and she was on the back of my mind but didn't invest but now listening about her and her story, you have intrigued me where I want to personally check her out, thank you Digi. I became a fan of you since you gave justice to Knuckles and Amy Rose, where other dissed them, where you actually explain them and with your segmented on Shantae, I am very much glad I have follow you. Keep doing what you do.
I started knowing about this character thanks to Pirate's Curse but I never played the games, but when Half-Genie Hero came out I was having a strong need in playing the games, and good luck came to me last year and noticed that Limited Run Games was doing a port of Pirate's Curse for the Nintendo Switch so I pre-ordered it before it was gone.
I played it on April or May of this year and I fell in love with the game, it's very charming and I love Shantae and the many characters I met along the way. And from that day I became a fan of the series and I beat the game, it was challenging but not unfair and it was fun.
I can't wait to finish Half-Genie Hero and play the fifth game, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your thoughts on the character and because of that I'm now subscribed to your channel. 😊

I’m so glad i picked up half-genie hero when i did. I hadn’t really heard much about her until that game, but learning how bumpy Shantae’s past was but Wayforward pulling through anyway really is inspiring. Can’t wait for Seven Sirens.

I find it also interesting how her struggles technically keep happening as well. Shovel Knight released around the same time as Pirate's Curse (who Yacht Club Games were original WayForward Employees), so Shovel Knight took a big spotlight and during the Half Genie Hero Kickstarter, it was released during a major kickstarter…. Might No. 9, so she was competing against the kickstarter that ended up raising $4 Million.
Honestly though, I think despite these struggles, she seems to keep pushing forward getting a bigger and bigger audience each time, and if The Seven Sirens does well, I hope she gains even more popularity.
and obligatory, I want Shantae for Smash... I hope she makes it as one of the DLC in the future.

I found Shantae thru Risky's Revenge and fell in love. I wanted to play the original, but was floored by the cost. Fortunately, it hit the 3DS eshop too and I've played every game sinse. Easily one of my favorite series.

I love the shantae series i found the series in the form of shantae and the pirates curse(it is free on xbox if u owened live gold) randomly like a year ago and it ended up becoming in my top 3 favorite games I love this series and can't wait for the 6th game:)

I haven't played either game but I do think it's a shame that in the indy retro gaming scene, she's completely overshadowed by characters like Shovel Knight.

Being a Game Boy collector, the first game has been on my want list for years. But regardless of whether I find a copy or not, I've played the other games in the series and adore them! The writing of the games are just great to put it bluntly. I'm very glad Shantae had a chance after the GBC.

Loved this 'Who Dat'! I have always found this character and game series intriguing, never got around to it, but always remembered this iconic character. Been watching a lot of vids lately and hopefully will play the games soon!
I knew of Shantae's presence through UA-cam and other media. It wasn't until I finally got into the series recently due to Steam's game sale and loved it as a platformer! When i do get into a different series i usually watch analysis videos about and i really enjoyed yours DiGi!~ :D
