Another Superhorn Showdown! Here we have a Chicago-era Monette alongside a brand-new Thane Performance Series trumpet with the large bell! Logan from Thane Trumpets used to work at Monette and his line of trumpets is amazing! There are 2 series of trumpets, with the Performance Series being the top of the line. Built with Meinlschmidt valves, the large bell Performance Series trumpet played here has a big, broad sound that leans dark but with lots of core and color. The horn slots well without being tight. And of course it looks beautiful in brushed lacquer! Monette has been building amazing trumpets for decades. This early Chicago-era Monette is an awesome player as well! It has a smaller sound shape than the contemporary Monette models and blends well with a wide variety of horns. This was a particularly fun video to make!

I liked the Thane more on all styles. The tone is my style. They both sound great but I just like the Thane more. I guess it sounded like better slots and had a little more "soul". Thanks again for doing another comparison. You did a great job and your playing is always a treasure.
FYI, from Monette:
SN 433 was made in 1988. It is the model MB-283. This was a middle-weight instrument in the 1980s, described as playing ‘medium dark,’ and it is just slightly on the heavier/darker side, compared to a common-weight instrument like a Bach 37.
That Thane is a great horn. I really enjoyed playing it the other day at the shop. It seemed easier to play my than my Monette Chicago was. That being said, I am partial to the unique sound of that Monette. The overtones and the focus of that sound is so pure to my ear. There is a quality there that is difficult for me to articulate verbally. You sound beautiful on it for sure.

Both horns sound great. I’m guessing the Thane’s bell is a little larger than the Monette? The Thane seems to have a wider sound, which I prefer.
I agree, even darker and with a bigger sound in the low register to my ears
@@Amadis37 Oh yeah, the Thane has a FAT sound in the low register. It's a ton of fun.
This was fun for me since I have a Thane Performance with a 37 style, standard size bell. I can't wait to compare between the two when that Monette arrives tomorrow! The thing I'm most curious to compare is how the intonation is between the two.
That Monette has its own vibe that no other company can replicate

I have both a 37 & 72 Thane, but have been looking into a Chicago/MB-111 Monette.
What makes a trumpet a "super horn?" Are there objective criteria for this designation? I'm not being facetious. I really enjoy your videos and find them very engaging and informative.
Austin 10 1/2 mouthpiece is better for high notes? is it better than 7c? I have a 7c and I have difficulty in the high notes SI DO, sorry I don't understand your videos very much because I don't speak English very well!!

@@ericmpena For this Monette yes, because I play in an orchestra, and this particular horn was in really bad shape. Bent bell and leadpipe, red rot, thinning brass on one of the valve knuckles and in the bell, and some other issues. The MB-283 is a little too dark for what I was looking for in an orchestra settings. While the Thane Performance is AMAZING, it ain't no Monette. Monette trumpets are still much more responsive and have a better intonation pattern (in my opinion)
Both Monette and Thane manufactured in Portland OR, USA.
The clarity, evenness, and intonation from the Monette are all superior. The Thane sounds great though, if that's the sound you'r looking for.
The Thane to me has a more velvety sound, the Monette a bit more brilliant.
I much prefer the Thane.

The Monette is just a little prettier for jAzz. I prefer jazz for both. I think the Thane has some overtones that make it interesting, it’s just not as pretty sounding to my ear.
Thane performance is so versatile.
Both horns are great ,so I’d go with the one that cost less $

honestly with the low fi recording they sound pretty much the same
UA-cam’s compression does a number on sound quality too 😎
Depends on your setup too. It helps if you play it through a nice DAC and audiophile grade headphones, otherwise you'll miss a lot of detail
The thane is more open and warm the Monett sound warm
Until you played Body and Soul they were about the same but then the Thane kicked ass …
