FYI in terms of the sound you might hear my ribbon mic got knocked over a few weeks ago. This on a Shure 57 but still sounds fine with headphones IMO and my furnace kicks on halfway through the video (and you can hear that hum). Thanks everyone for your comments! If you have any further comparison video suggestions I'll be happy to do them if I have the horns here at the home studio.
I agree with one of the posters earlier on - the BACB has a more commercial sound, especially for jazz. Whereas on the fast jazz passages, the Monette sounding sluggish and "blatty", the BACB was nimble and the passages were executed much more articulately. The BACB just seemed to respond a lot faster. Also the extreme high notes on the BACB were cleaner and slotting/intonation was more secure. I do think that at the low end the sound of the Monette was richer, however also consider that playing the same mouthpiece on both trumpets introduces certain biases for each trumpet, for certainly you could put a different mouthpiece on the BACB and darken the sound considerably. And that brings up another aspect that wasn't tested - how "mouthpiece sensitve" was each trumpet's coloration to changes in mouthpiece styles? Wish I could've heard each on a variety or cups/rims. But all in all, I liked the sound of the BACB more. It just seems to be a more versatile horn all around, especially if you are a commercial/jazz player.
Found the Monette to have a broader rounder sound as opposed to BAC which was also broad but thinner. Also the Monette was more focused. Slotting was great too.
Both are nice. That room, with that mic, makes both sound flugelish. The Monette sounds a bit more covered. I'm not sure how much the reverb is affecting them overall, but unprocessed might give a better idea.
Hi Trent, thanks for the demo - to me the BACB had more pop in the sound, and would be my preference for what I like to play. I do like the "old school" look of the Monette though.
Monette is darker. I prefer the sound. Bell size and taper appears to be different and probably contributes to the difference. How is the flexibility to bend notes between the two?
The BACB sounds fantastic. Definitely a little more brash and brassier sounding. For a guy who likes the Benge sound it is the better horn for me. The Monette you can tell is a HIGH end horn with a goal that it does very well…
I like both. I am a big fan of your trumpet playing on ny horn/mouthpiece setup. For me the monette sounds super locked into the slots, which can be a blessing or curse for an improviser. When you played Joy spring was the only time I overwhelmingly preferred the Monette. I like the sparkle of the BACB, kind of reminds me of a Benge. The horns are really different and hard to compare.
To my ears, the Monette appears to be a soloists horn. It has a very dark and "heavy" sound compared to the BACB, dare I say "thick?" The BACB has more of a mainstream sound, and would blend better in a section. The BACB also seems to respond better (easier to play?), and the high notes really pop compared to the Monette. As always...a pleasure to hear you play!
That BACB sounds GREAT. I like the Monette but man, the attack and core on the BACB was spectacular. Lots of overtones to my ear. Just send me that one hahaha. No really, I need to save but BACB was #1 for me.
The 111 seems both a bit more nimble slotting and has a richer low end. I’d pick it for the kind of playing I do. The BACB has a nice round tone and would be a good pick for section playing.
Trent, I like the sound of the BACB better. It seems to have a brighter sound and happier. I have been a little against the Monette horns since Maynard started playing one. The sound is just too round with out the center as the BACB. Don't know how they play but I like the sound.
I know this would make it more apples to oranges in this case, but would you consider using Monette mouthpieces when you demo Monette trumpets? If you can track down some XLT models, they feel and sound much more like non-Monette pieces, but are much more compatible with Dave’s horns. Just a thought. Thanks for all your videos!! Hope to meet you in KC sometime. Spent 5 years there for college. Lots of close friends still there.
one other reason is the fact I prefer to not switch too many variables. If you switch the mouthpiece then I have two foreign things to try and navigate through. At least by keeping one variable consistent I have a bit more of a chance to feel more even. I'm not sure that makes sense? ;-) Thank you for checking out the videos!
In every excerpt I preferred the Monette. Focus and clarity were better in all ranges. The other was ok but the focus seemed to get away sometimes leading to less clarity on articulations. My 2 cents. Love your channel.
The MB-111 had, at times, a thicker sound than the BACB, but I felt the less crisp articulation and general "fuzziness" of the sound were drawbacks at times. (By fuzziness, I mean the sound definition.) The BACB, while clearer and with more pop to the articulation, sounded a little on the thin side. So I'd have to say I wouldn't choose either horn. 🤷♂️
Beautiful playing Trent! What mpc set ups were you using? I could see early on was something with your modern blank, then switched to a two piece with acrylic rim. Take care, man!
The Monette is a bit heavier. I'll try to see if my food scale can weigh the horns (my shipping scale which I normally weigh instruments is at the shop which I cannot go to currently due to Covid). Thanks always for watching!
Great comparison and great sound Trent! II really love listening to you play! To my ears, the BACB has a more focused sound, but both trumpets sound really good. How do they feel to play? I'm going out on a limb, but the BACB sounds a bit easier to play? True or no?
I would pick the ACB in a hot second over the Monette for all-around playing, it has a better sounding brass core to it with the articulations sounding more distinct and focused whereas the Monette sounds fluffy to me but would be great for small combo jazz playing. What is the price on the ACB by the way?
BACB definitely has a more commercial feel to my ears. The Monette has a "creamier' darker sound and, probably great for solo work. The BACB can sit right on top of a band, with it's brighter articulations. Both great sounding horns, depending on what you need. Of course, the horns won't make a great player! You bring that to the table already.
hi, i'm not a trumpet expert but I love instruments and my father is a trumpet player. Monette seems limited compared to the other, ,the tone seems a little choked, a sort of frequency cut , at certain times, the BACB seems to me more female and elegant and solar. anyway both are beautiful, thank you for the sympathy and quality entertainment
Well played! You sound best on the BACB all the way! I kind of wanted the Monette to sound better initialy, but yeah the BACB sounds more focused and seams to slot easyer in the upper register.
That was The ultimate showdown. When it comes to the high notes the bacb kept it sparkle the Monette sounded dull and ugly on the high notes maybe they did that on purpose so that you'll buy their more expensive trumpet. The bacb trumpet is better looking in appearance. The Monette trumpet sounded good on the low notes but the bacb sounded good on the low notes too. I almost want to say that the Monette sounded better on the low notes but I'm not sure about that. It's like comparing Peet's coffee to Starbucks. They are both coffee. The Monette has a rich flavor like Peet's coffee on the low notes but when the high notes were played it sounded like s***. The bacb trumpet is the best trumpet that I seen in its class for any price. That Monette trumpet lost the game when you played the high notes. I would love to see another showdown between this trumpet and their flagship raja p3 stc. It's because the Monette sounds so good on the low notes it don't sound no good on the high notes it didn't make any compromise so that it could sound good on the high notes but the bacb did. That's what the Monette trumpet should have done in order to be perfect. Everything's done ugly about that Monette trumpet and everything is sparkly about that bacb. I'm not completely satisfied with the valve caps. I'm hoping that you'll create some valve cap options. Wooden buttons that is thoughtful and thoughtful is good but I may not want wooden buttons I may want to switch the buttons to turquoise buttons or marble buttons. Or just maybe buttons a little more typical. I would also would like the common dual tuning slide option and you would really kill the game if you create the arrow shape tuning slide option as well as the square shape. How dare they try to charge us so much money acbc you're a hero.
Both sound great. BACB seems brighter & a bit more responsive. Monette is what you’d think - darker, more spread (yet bright for a Monette) Based on the sound of each, I’d choose the BACB to replace my Bach 72 lightweight, and then an Adams A4 (NOT this Monette) for a darker sounding horn. S’up Trent! ✌️
It's the player not the horn . Trumpets shouldn't cost much based on the nature of the instrument. If I ever run into someone with a monette I'm going to show them that the trumpet is nothing special at all, just a name. Theory, athletic strength, knowledge of vocal singing, lung power, posture, tung control, sound image imitation, lip and facial muscle strength, and more power. You need skills not some fancy piece of Metal tubing. Do you think Pops changed the game swinging on a 10 thousand dollar trumpet? Get real
I can listen to you play the B-111 all day! What a beautiful tone!
FYI in terms of the sound you might hear my ribbon mic got knocked over a few weeks ago. This on a Shure 57 but still sounds fine with headphones IMO and my furnace kicks on halfway through the video (and you can hear that hum). Thanks everyone for your comments! STILL more quiet than the Monette lathe machines in the background.
There’s such a nice richness and velvety property to the Monette. Nice horn man.
For what I play, I prefer the low-end of the Monette. Very rich sound .
Lead work, BACB all the way. Nice and focused.
Great Job I like both. But How much>> $$,,??
To me the BACB sounded Alittle brighter, maybe lead work, and the mb-111 for jazz?
I agree with one of the posters earlier on - the BACB has a more commercial sound, especially for jazz. The Monette by far has a complex sound with more depth and overtones.
Found the Monette to have a broader rounder sound as opposed to BAC which was also broad but thinner. Also the Monette was more focused. Slotting was great too.
BACB
@@austincustom Oops sorry my bad. BACB
How much is the ACB ? I do not feel the diferente... Both sound amazing.
email us at info@austincustombrass.com for more pricing details. Thanks!
To me, the Monette and the BACB sound very similar. They may have a very different feel... Love your playing, Trent!
Both are nice. That room, with that mic, makes both sound flugelish. The Monette sounds a bit more covered. I'm not sure how much the reverb is affecting them overall, but unprocessed might give a better idea.

The Monette you can tell is a HIGH end horn with a goal that it does very well…
How would you compare Schagerl to monette?
I wouldn't. They are two entirely different entities.
For demonstrations;I subject you you all trumpet and said the brand name each time you change the trumpet.
Thanks.
The monette has a two piece bell, you can see the band right at the bell flair so it’s easy to tell the difference
they all fantastic, would be so hard to chose
I like both. I am a big fan of your trumpet playing on ny horn/mouthpiece setup. For me the monette sounds super locked into the slots, which can be a blessing or curse for an improviser. I want both!!!😎

Do you have any Bach 72* with a STANDARD lead pipe? Wondered if you’d compare that to some other lead-ish horns.
I do not have that horn combination at the home studio. Thank you for checking out the video and your comments!
Trent, I like the sound of the BACB better. It seems to have a brighter sound and happier. I have been a little against the Monette horns since Maynard started playing one. The sound is just too round with out the center as the BACB. Don't know how they play but I like the sound.
Didn't Roy Hargrove play a similar style Monette trumpet?
at one point he had one of Wynton's old ones. This Model in this video is one of their newer "production" models made in Portland, Oregon
I will not. I greatly prefer my own pieces.
Trent Austin Cool.

At least by keeping one variable consistent I have a bit more of a chance to feel more even. I'm not sure that makes sense? ;-) Thank you for checking out the videos!
Trent Austin Absolutely!! Like I said, it would be more apples and oranges that way. I love hearing you play changes, btw! Straight-ahead swingin’!!
In every excerpt I preferred the Monette. Focus and clarity were better in all ranges. The other was ok but the focus seemed to get away sometimes leading to less clarity on articulations. My 2 cents. Love your channel.

acb 3c for everything but the lead stuff Taz in acrylic with a ka3 backbore for that.
It sounds like flexibility is easier on the BACB. Is that true for you? Also, is the Monette heavier than the BACB?
The Monette is a bit heavier. I'll try to see if my food scale can weigh the horns (my shipping scale which I normally weigh instruments is at the shop which I cannot go to currently due to Covid).
Thanks always for watching!

No question, I like your sound on the BACB better. Sounds great!

great for small combo jazz playing. What is the price on the ACB by the way?
There are links in the video description for both horns.
BACB for that back alley jazz, Monette for that bull fighters prayer. Or maybe the other way around?
The BACB holds its own, I cannot justify one cent higher for the monnette
Monette has a deeper sound, I like it
BACB definitely has a more commercial feel to my ears. The Monette has a "creamier' darker sound and, probably great for solo work. The BACB can sit right on top of a band, with it's brighter articulations. Both great sounding horns, depending on what you need. Of course, the horns won't make a great player! Som bonito demais! Dos dois...
The 😩😩BACB is a little too bright for me. It’s a great classical sound; but for jazz, I prefer the sound of the Monette.
Monette definitely- much more colourful sound
the Monette has more core and a more secure front of the not
monette sounds richer to me but they both sound good
At first I preferred the darker sound of the Monette, but by the end of the video the responsiveness of the BACB won me over.
Christina Kaspersen totally agree
hi, i'm not a trumpet expert but I love instruments and my father is a trumpet player. Monette seems limited compared to the other, ,the tone seems a little choked, a sort of frequency cut , at certain times, the BACB seems to me more female and elegant and solar. anyway both are beautiful,

The Monette has more overtones, but the BACB is a better lead horn in my opinion
Well played!

The BACB appeals more to my ear. It's quite a handsome looking horn too. Which one gets your vote Trent?
Both sound great. BACB seems brighter & a bit more responsive.
Monette is what you’d think - darker, more spread (yet bright for a Monette)
Based on the sound of each, I’d choose the BACB to replace my Bach 72 lightweight, and then an Adams A4 (NOT this Monette) for a darker sounding horn.
S’up Trent! ✌️
Monette it has a little fatter body to the sound with a bit more point in the articulation.
BACB
BAC - 1, Monette - 0 Trent, you sound great, especially on the BAC.
BACB
BACB is a very nice luxury BMW the Monette is a Ferrari
BACB sounds sassy, MB-111 sounds serious :)
I liked the sound BACB way more
I like the fact the Monette didn’t sound like a Monette
I think the Mouthpiece has a lot to do with that honestly (and one of the reasons we make acb pieces!). Thanks for checking out the video!
