- Well as you know, I've had a pretty great collection of instruments over the years(perk of my job). Included are a few instruments from Monette throughout the years. This horn is very unique as it's fairly light weight, extremely well balanced, and boy does it have an incredible sound! It's most definitely not a trumpet sound, but something completely unique and interesting in my opinion! monette does it again in terms of making a work of art that is completely its own thing.
I'm always felt like even though they are extremely expensive instruments, they are worth the money and this horn is no exception. The opportunity came up recently for me to purchase this instrument from one of my old students and I jumped up on it. You might have also noticed that I've been selling a bunch of my collection this past year that was in order to fund this one singular purchase.
New these horns are around 18,000 and yes, that's not a small amount of money. But for what this instrument is, it is absolutely worth every penny. Truly world class in every aspect. Now I still have a long ways to go on in terms of my acclamation but I will say this horn is just blowing my mind.
So here's a video of me playing through a few things on it and talking about the horn a little bit. I hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions please put them in the comments!
As always, thanks for watching and I do hope you subscribe to the channel. We have so many cool new videos coming in the next few months!

Great in your hands on your chops !
WOW !!! One of a kind suits you ! Soooooo Happy for you !
What a beautiful instrument! Thank you for sharing! And wonderful playing as always.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful horn, wonderful sound, and great playing even if you are not fully acclimated to it. Let us hear it again when you are!
Beautiful playing ... and thank you for often featuring that Jerry Goldsmith tune ...
Sounds like a dream ❤
It would be great to hear this with a binuaral microphone set up so we can hear what you hear?
Wow, you sound at home on this horn. It’s hard to explain, but there’s a texture you’re getting that’s beautiful.
I have the Ron Miles Resonance mouthpiece that was designed for this instrument. You have inspired me to dig it out and give it another go. There was confusion over the rim numbering and it was smaller than I expected.
I remember when Ron Miles came to town with Matt Wilson he was playing the prototype of that horn and sounded amazing (of course). I do believe it has been improved since then it sounds great!
What a beautiful and mellow sound ...like it's not a mute
lapis lazuli finger buttons what a beauty ! just an unctuous sound !
Wow! Absolutely beautiful Trent. This would sound fabulous on the old “true” cornet solo literature of the late 19th & early 20th century.
For some very interesting reading, check out John H. Barron’s very comprehensive book, “Concert Life in Nineteen Century New Orleans” he has information on the not so well known cornet soloists in the post war New Orleans concert scene. Highly recommended book for anyone interested in the music of one of the most important musical cities in 19th Century America. There’s some excellent details on the 1884-1885 World Cotton Exposition in New Orleans which featured the Mexican 8th Regimental Band who performed concerts in New Orleans for several months in just about every venue and their influence upon NO Music was very important. Their appearances were the first in NO and also possibly the entire US where the saxophone was first exposed to NOLA Musicians. Upon their departure from their lengthy engagement they gifted many band instruments to the musicians on NOLA. Barron’s expose on this band gives an interesting look into just how much this very well rehearsed ensemble influenced the music of New Orleans.
I get it. Hmmm. If I was patient enough I might get Dave to make one for me. I think my P3 took over two years. At my age that's a long time.
Beautiful little happy horn. Shape is sweet. Kinda reminded me of silly Sgt Pepper movie trumpet … but this isn’t a prop!
Yeah you can't get this one at Thomann 😎
@@austincustom 🤣
Sweet!!!!!
So, what kind of case would that fit in to? ;-)
The one it came with
@@austincustomnice! ;-)
Sounds amazing!
So besides this new horn, what's left in your collection now?
Not much! I'll get to doing a video sometime in the next few weeks
Maybe I missed it (FOMO!). Was your Böhme Praedo among the horns sold to finance this Monette?
Yes
We are happy to order one for you! Email the shop at info@austincustombrass.com
Does a PUJE fit in this sound slot ?
No
Nothing but the Monette sounds like this horn.
Nat Adderly would have loved that horn.
neve let it go
Monette horns are priced to sell and are in demand. Their formula works.
Nope
Maybe he should call it a Mornette.
If that was supposed to be humorous Don't quit your day job. 😎
@@austincustom I assure you, I will not. :)
I don't get it. I can see that are so beautiful and I know they are quality built instruments; but every one I have ever heard, including the couple I played in their shop, sounds so breathy and honestly kind of dull. I know how to make a breathy tone when I want it, but I wasn't a fan of the fact that on a Monette, I just couldn't turn it off.
Does this sound "Breathy"all the time? No. It doesn't really matter if you get it or not but I understand your post. Personality I get it and got it 😎
Trent is right, you either get it or you don't. I own a Monette trumpet, heavier weight B957 model built in '97. It has a beautiful satin like sound, but man it can scream if you need it to! Very nice instrument and beautiful playing as usual Trent! One day I would love to travel to K.C. and pick out my dream flugel! Keep up the great work on the channel!
I certainly don't mean to belittle your choice, and I hope to see more videos of your Cornette over time to see how your playing it evolves as you get to know the horn -- I also hope you have a blast with it, Trent, it's a seriously cool horn design! Despite not really getting the Monette thing, I would still love to own one. They are a thing of beauty and perhaps if I owned one, the time spent with it would open my eyes to how to make the thing play the way I want. I currently play a Monette mouthpiece, which I am hoping to replace as the specific model just doesn't work perfectly for me. I would consider another Monette mpc if I can find the right one. I've actually been looking at your mouthpieces for a couple months but am having a hard time figuring out the equivalencies.

@@austincustom I intend to! I've got a Doubler's Cornet on preorder for my kids who want to learn and for me to test because I've been about 10 seconds away from pulling the trigger on a doubler's flugel and large bore Doubler's Cornet for several weeks now.
$18k? Yow. I was sampling horns with Mick Gillette once and asked his opinion about Monette. He said: "A hunk of lead for the price of a car." No offense, Trent!
none taken I know most people can't afford one and then will get aggressive about the price. I don't have any problem with the price. It's a work of art. You can't expect Morton's food at McDonald's but both are meals I guess.
Cornet is the proper name.
Gosh they must have spelled it incorrectly on the instrument.
This trumpet is amazing but in this vídeo is sound terrible.
Thanks for your deep insight
Oh and it's not a trumpet 😅
Awesome horn, leave to Monette to come up it, with the price of a compact car......
it is an amazing instrument!
