sci-fi doesn't mean most confusing and or impossible fantasy mind altering. Inception was a good mystery drama at best.... Sci-fi? Hardly. Shouldn't have even made the list. Also they were rated somehow... Who did the rating? Interstellar was a nice movie until we got to the end where they were the ones from the black hole in the future sending messages to themselves in the past? Bull Sh....
All our favorites can't be in the top 5. You can't please all of the people all of the time. I've been lucky with this list, many seem to like it. My favorite's not in the top 5 either if that's any consolation.
I haven't watched some movies in this list like Limitless, Source Code, Her, or Super 8. But apart from those ones, here is my top 9 list : 9. Prometheus 8. Gravity 7. The Martian 6. Edge of Tomorrow 5. Snowpiercer 4. Chronicle 3. Oblivion 2. Inception 1. INTERSTELLAR
Prometheus, star trek and Gravity are just decent for me, honestly i'm more of a star wars guy than star trek but, yeah the last jedi and rogue one weren't bad, Oblivion and Avatar were actualy pretty damn good but Intertellar, WOW! I still remember the huge emptiness I felt after finishing that movie for the fist time in the cinema, you know, that empty feeling by watching a great movie/series/anime playing a great game campaign or reading a great book, that sort of feeling
Yep this is an average score totted up from a number of sources. A year on and Star Wars VII might not get the same love it got when I first published this.
This list makes me sad. #1.Marvel's movies are comic movies, not sci-fi. #2 Star Wars saga isn't sci-fi, it's a future fantasy: c'mon guys, law of gravity doesn't exist, there's magic (the force) and there are a lot of races like in a fantasy (and chapter VII is the worst). #3 Where the fuck are AUTOMATA(!!!), PREDESTINATION, Elysium, Chappie, Cloud Atlas, Pacific Rim, Riddick, The Signal, In Time ?
I remember the long running threads on my movie forum on whether Star Wars was science fiction or science fantasy, I can see the fantasy side of it - Jedi ghosts, levitation etc but on the other hand it does contain spaceships, robots, alien planets and alien creatures.
A clear distinction has to be made between fantasy and science-fiction. I'm a big fan of Star Wars. But when you hear explosions in space or see Darth Vader choking someone to death in Star Wars movies, you know that Star Wars has nothing to do with science-fiction whatsoever. Star Wars is pure fantasy, because it does not even try to give any attention to scientific details or the natural laws of our known universe, because it has its own universe and natural laws. Science-fiction in turn is, as the great Robert A. Heinlein put it, "a realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method." Another distinction made by Arthur C. Clarke: "Science fiction is something that could happen - but you usually wouldn't want it to. Fantasy is something that couldn't happen - though you often only wish that it could."
Good post. Problem is very very few science fiction films deal with 'science that could happen' or 'natural laws' - The Terminator, Time Machine, Inception, Interstellar even 2001 A Space Odyssey are all flights of fancy dreamed up by imaginative people. In a logical universe none of those scenarios will ever happen. This where the 'fiction' side of SF comes to play, the reason you hear sound in space in movies isn't because the filmmakers are dolts but because a silent explosion in space just doesn't have the same effect on an audience as an ear-shattering sound. If all SF cinema conformed to reality it would get pretty dull very quickly, astronauts marooned on neighboring planets and moons and problems on an orbital space station is all the 'real SF' we'll end up watching. The universe might be more mystifying than we can possibly imagine, our laws of science might not even begin to explain it. No scientist has yet come up with a reason for why the Big Bang happened or what existed before the Big Bang, is there an end to the universe? Is there an end to infinity? The whole concept is mindblowing.
thanks mann you made my day... I really miss some of these movies as I live in India only some of the movies are released here that too are dubbed which horribly sucks😂😂..
Top 10 Charts a dubbed dvd?? It can be more worse... The dvds are pirated ones recorded in theatres with all that background noise I've to wait for 4-5 months until I get the HD movie from somewhere 😔😔😔
Whoa that is a bad situation for a film fan, but at least your favorite films are in the original language? You should be able to get what you want from the internet.
I really enjoyed Pandorum, with Dennis Quaid. A great action, underated, roller coaster ride, yet so many people who only watch these big blockbuster, highly promoted Hollywood movies have probably never heard of it. Check it out ;)
I was reading Alec Guinness biography a few weeks ago where he referred to Star Wars as "fairytale rubbish" well it made him a millionaire for the first time, so he should have been nicer.

Thanks for posting zainab, appreciate the kind words, usually people are so abusive when their favorite isn't no.1. Sorry Interstellar isn't higher but that's how the final scores came in. You can try my previous sci-fi video for the years 2000-2009 maybe there are films on there you haven't seen.
And we get to the final Sci-Fi movie. #30 Limitless is pretty good...and now it is a tv show here. Ratings starting out pretty strong too. #28 A Tom Cruise movie I liked. #27 Snowpiercer was awesome...loved that movie. Disappointed with #26, #25 & #24. #23 Source Code...Duncan Jones strikes again. #20 Edge of Tomorrow ....another Cruise movie I enjoyed. The Martian was a great fun movie ride....seen all movies #30 to #16.
Hello Bruce, yes we've reached the end of the road for sci-fi ratings. I think I've done a reasonably good job sifting thru 60 years of sci-fi cinema. There will always be disagreements on the ratings, everyone has a favorite they wished was placed higher. Some of the films that missed out on a place in this video include - Pacific Rim, Ender's Game, Tron Legacy, John Carter, Battleship, Under the Skin, Elysium and Cloud Atlas. Out of 100 films I had rated for this time period last on the list was Hot Tub Time Machine 2 with a score of 3.4 and 2nd from last was the new Fantastic Four which had a 3.9 score.
In my opinion 'Gravity' really didn't offer anything to the table except some nice visuals, I'm absolutely shocked that anyone had the audacity to rate it higher than actual plot-driven movies. In today's day and age it takes a lot more than just nice visuals to impress the majority. I'm certainly not saying it's a horrible movie that shouldn't have been made, but I would definitely have preferred spending the time watching something with at least a little bit of substance to it. If I wanted nice visuals of space without a story to bring them together I'd have just googled it :).
not agree at all inception shoudl be number one , interstellar in top 4 for not saying 2 , and for some piece a shit who dont like interstellar , u really didnt get into it
Uh.....I doubt anyone has ever come back from the theater after seeing The Avengers: Age of Ultron' and thought, " Wow! Now THAT was a great science fiction movie!". This list is weird and random. Friggin' Birdman is more "science fiction" than a Marvel movie.
I'm sure I've asked this question before but do you love Interstellar because it's a good sci-fi movie or because it's by the director of The Dark Knight? Cheers.
Hey! I actually didn't like The dark knight that much, the second one was good because of Heath Ledger performance, but the batman movies don't appeal much to me, but still Christopher Nolan is a genious, and i honestly loved Interstellar because of the story, the actors, the soundtrack, and the whole plot was believable, even though it was sci-fi, the way they explain the movie, and the actors performance was believable... Gravity it was too boring, its like 127 hours but in space, i think interstellar had a more interesting plot, just that ;)
Being a bit of a 3D fan I did like that aspect of Gravity, especially if you saw it on a big screen, the feeling of being in space. But storywise Interstellar is definitely more interesting. As for the video rankings critics did go nuts over Gravity, and Star Wars too had 'stellar' reviews. Not sure they'd feel the same way about it now after all the excitement has died down. Thanks for replying.
Its a matter of personal taste :P Star Wars was a good movie and it had the hype because it was the big return to the classic star wars, but the movie basically used the same plot from A New Hope, it didn't move me much, but still was an amazing return. Interstellar really had me with the soundtrack, the most emotional moments, and the finale, it was weird but it was like something from a dream, nothing like anything i've seen before, it was original, didnt feel like a recycled plot to me, same with Inception. Original and Interesting :P
Ok because of this talk, i went and re-watched Gravity, and it wasn't that bad, for some reason i had the ideia of it being really boring... still don't think is better than Interstellar, the story doesn't evolve much from floating and grabing on to space stations during most of the movie, but it wasn't as bad as i thought...
i know its ranked by rateings but Gravity is trash , its great film for visuals , but the movie is pure trash ... and it makes me sad to see interstellar being rated not 9 ...
I'm sorry you hated Gravity, it didn't have much of a story to it but I thought it was pretty good and it looked great in 3D, why do you say it's pure trash, would Christopher Nolan have directed it any different? Or maybe you didn't like the actors? Anyway the highest rating I could find for Interstellar was 8.6 and that was from IMDB voters. Thanks for posting.
Top 10 Charts thats the point there was no story , like i said the only upside was visuals , everything else was realy not good ... no story - no point of watching the movie , like mad max that movie was just action movie but it was made so well, it had a story not a great one, but that action just made that movie so good, it just meshed so well with the story you know? , and i dont think visuals had so much impact to make gravity a good movie .
#15...loved Her. #10 Looper....a classic....Bruce's finally great movie? It is beginning to look like that. #9 Interstellar...I liked most of the movie...but the final 30 minutes were weak. Wow most of the Top 10 were sequels or superhero movies....but then again...almost all movies fall into that category today. Star Wars 7 rating seems a little high....seems as time goes on....people are turning on that movie....and the IMDb rating continues to go down. Still a fun movie. Great end to your Sci-Fi videos. 30 for 30 seen. Voted up.
Star Wars TFA was getting top marks everywhere, the critics went gaga over it. I wonder if they feel the same now that the excitement has died down? I thought Interstellar would do better but not all the critics liked that one, they much preferred Inception. The question is should I include superhero movies? Iron man is clearly sci-fi but Thor is fantasy, where do we place Spider-Man? Fantasy? I had to include The Avengers because there was an alien invasion in the first one and robots on the rampage in the second. Thanks for the comments.
Top 10 Charts Science fiction needs science behind it. If you look behind the scenes and see very little to no science there, it means that THAT is not a sci fi EVER.
Inception is pretty high up. Gravity got rave reviews and so did Force Awakens. I was surprised too at Star Wars being no.1 maybe the critics would rate it differently now that all the excitement has died down.
The Force Awakens has 8.2 score now.. and that's still way too much, for just a rehashed and recycled movie... Many just bought into the Star Wars overhype bandwagon machine.. if this movie wouldn't have had the title Star Wars, many would see that it's a weak movie.. they are just blinded by the overhype and fanboyism...
Yeah a year ago people were just excited to see a new Star Wars movie, even the critics went nuts over it, a year later and it doesn't look like the film will age well. Maybe we'll be more impressed when the entire 9-film saga has finished in a couple of years.
Hanger games have nothing to do with Science Fiction, superhero movies are just tales. Where's The Arrival, The Independence Day? The Martian was underrated....
You're right! "Alien, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Matrix, Blade Runner, Moon, District 9, The Dark Knight" are totally overrated. Three cheers for the Marvel Universe and the very, very, very old Han Solo. May God rest his soul.
Hunger games are bullshit. Movie is nothing like the book. Actors seem mediocre, the movies are too short to even convey the feeling you get reading the book. I'm not being salty because "book is always better than the movie" (which is) but honestly because the movie is overrated. First of everything seems so rushed. Like it happend so fast I was like "And that's it? Whole book in a hour long movie?" they changed some important parts from the book. Honestly it seems like one of those attempts of rookie film makers to become famous by making a movie based on a book. Some do it good, some just flop. Like Maximum Ride for example. Book is awesome, movie is comeple crap. Also why do people have the need to make movies based on cartoons? Like Jem and Holograms. Also new Titans movie is also crap. Latest marvel movies are also crap. Wonder Woman is crap. That movie when they fight Superman is crap. Honestly do people think just because they have flashy effects and good animation that it will cover horrible acting and actors that do not mach the apperance of the original character from cartoon or comic. Also some coststumes look like they are made for holloween **cough** Titans movie **cough** Starfire *cough**
Wow, this list is just bogus. Almost half of these movies were pure trash, at best a 4 on my scale. And that piece of junk star wars "the force awakes" was #1, what a joke. Oblivion was 10 time better and it was a mediocre story with great special effects. My list, #1 Interstellar, #2 The Martian, #3 Captain America the Winter Soldier. I liked most of Gravity, but it's not for everybody and the ending is a complete farce. Those ratting sites are way too beholding to the studios for access. Rotten Tomatoes has become a complete joke, and IMDB has always been way off.
I know what you mean. Critics went gaga over The Force Awakens when it came out. I'll bet the ratings would be different now. But it does look like it's rare to find people who are huge fans of Star Wars and Christopher Nolan too. FWIW I enjoyed Inception more, there far too much crying in Interstellar. "There's no crying in space!" ;) Good to see another Martian fan and I did enjoy Oblivion, music too. Thanks for posting.
You're not looking forward to Ridley Scott's next Alien film I take it? I'm not a fan of Prometheus but Scott did direct the first Alien back in 1979 a movie thats arguably better than any of the films on this list.

The fact that Gravity was rated higher than Interstellar is one of these things why aliens don't contact us. XD

StarWars is more of a fairytale movie, and should have been much down the rank. Interstellar has all the theoritical science fiction elements.

Great list!
Thank you!
Wow critopher Nolan people are loving you man you are genius
Thanks!
i know its ranked by rateings but Gravity is trash , its great film for visuals , but the movie is pure trash ... and it makes me sad to see interstellar being rated not 9 ...
Top 10 Charts
thats the point there was no story , like i said the only upside was visuals , everything else was realy not good ... no story - no point of watching the movie , like mad max that movie was just action movie but it was made so well, it had a story not a great one, but that action just made that movie so good, it just meshed so well with the story you know? , and i dont think visuals had so much impact to make gravity a good movie .
B Fame 4 INTERSTELLA GREATEST MOVIE OF THE CENTURY
B Fame 4 Just like 2001 space garbage. Its all visuals and shit story.
Fam3 yeah dude you are the one who understands, interstellar is the best
Prometheus should be in top 10
The Force Awakens is now an average of 8.3
Yeah when that video was made the critics were nuts over that Star Wars film, not so much now. The sequels were a bit of a let down too.
you have right 😊😊😊
thanks
Glad you liked it.
Does Anyone Agree With The List ????
Can some one say me that is interstellar is Hindi dubbed ??available or not
Gracity looks like it sucks - Inception MUST be number one - Mad Max is in a pretty good position - Force Awakens shouldn't be number one
Inception is pretty high up. Gravity got rave reviews and so did Force Awakens. I was surprised too at Star Wars being no.1 maybe the critics would rate it differently now that all the excitement has died down.
Top 10 Charts
yeah true
Go to a mental asylum and say that, I guarantee you they will take you in.
got 2 know a lot by this list
The way back ,martian , intetstellar,gravity,127 hour
Make now from 2016 to2018
It's a good idea. I'll wait till the end of the year.
I think I w8tch thema all a long time agone
Gravity is No. 2 ???? Dafaq ???!!!!! It is the most overrated movie in the history of movies.

நன்றி 👍👍👌👌👌🙏🙏
So number 30 is best and number 1 is worst!
Take out all marvel films and make a proper list. Absolutely hate those films. Way too fake.
so what, DC is better?. why is a "fake" movie among some of the highest grossing films in history?
Harry potter ?????
Intesteller awesome
should've excluded superhero movies
bAkA Definitely NOT science fiction as I know it.
Sir,..... U NAILED IT
The Martian at no. 2? Funny
1. Interstellar
2. Inception
3. Arrival
You got to be kidding with that Prometheus entry right there. The flick is pure hogwash.
You're not looking forward to Ridley Scott's next Alien film I take it? I'm not a fan of Prometheus but Scott did direct the first Alien back in 1979 a movie thats arguably better than any of the films on this list.
