Here's a slice of nothing too serious from the first, electronic edition of Earthworks, in Japan 1991. An 'emotional' shirt is one that is too noisy, too gaudy, too garish - such as was becoming prevalent within the band's stage-wear. Iain Ballamy (saxophone) and Django Bates (keyboards) were both very young - in their early 20s - when I hired them in 1987, and both in their anarchic phase. Neither wanted jazz to sound quite the way it had; neither had heard of Yes, King Crimson or Genesis; both played really well as individuals, but better still as a four-handed, two-brained organism. So, perfect candidates - just what I wanted for a new band called Earthworks. Both wrote much of the music, and both are now distingushed Professors of Jazz in London and Switzerland respectively.
The main written melody here is just three pitches - G#, A natural, A# - played in duet by bass and tenor saxophone, in a deliberately unrepetitive sequence, until it breaks down to an improvisation at 2'05". Must have been tough to remember, but Iain and bassist Tim Harries don't put a foot wrong. For some unexpected reason the improv wends it's way to Ballamy's rendition of a well-known, heroic classical theme at 4'26". That leads in turn, perfectly naturally, to a 20-note chord from the four-handed organism. After a lot of cueing the written music returns at 5'57", shortly after which the drummer stumbles with some rushed phrasing at 6'05" (it was supposed to have been tight with the keys!). Then we're off to the conclusion with a stereo race-car sample having the final say. Of course.
It's alternately messy, tight, frantic, and gentle, leading to some unexpected gems that would have been impossible to write. I like the whole thing, warts and all, and I hope you do too.

I have listened to bill bruford for 50 years, since Yes, and I have yet to figure out when he will hit the snare.
At the right time ?
@@loupasternak yes, “Bill time.”
ThAts hysterical...dude!!!
Mr bruford... " when in doubt roll" said nothing about snare!
Has that exceptional quality of careening around a corner, tires slipping, gravel flying, just about to lose it and over the cliff but out of sheer will, determination and immense talent, manage to stay on the road. Well done, sirs.
21stCenturySchizoid-D: It sounds as though you should song write for BB. Slip in a few verses and hooks.
I love Bill's creativity and precision, and snare sound!!! A "Must see performance!" Also his complete works are now available for purchase too, so cool!!! Thank you Bill Bruford for your drumming contribution to the world!!!
As a Jazz and Prog freak love the music and albums Bill has been involved with . One of the great drummers .
Really appreciated the "liner notes" on this one. As proper musicians, we can often be so critical of our efforts. So thankful you are sharing "warts and all!"
I saw this tour in Philadelphia...March 3, 1992..the audience was a bit hyped having just seen Bill on the YES Union tour in 1991.
He got this crazy loud audience response at the end of the show...That's Philly for ya....lol.
Bet Bill was glad to get back to this!
@@chrisgale5634 Yes, I remember him mentioning it during that show in Philly. Said he was glad he could actually see the people in the back row for a change.
I was fortunate enough to see the Earthworks tour in DC and it was one of my favorite concerts ever. Bill was wearing this shirt then!
Thank you Master: This is a great gift and a sample of how much your talent can make a topic grow. Until today I only knew the 1987´s LP version.
Awesome
Oh Yes! Interplay! Fine work! Thank you so much! Great sound too.
🍀🌊🌊Extraodinary brilliant, 🌿one of a kind Drummer.🌿 That's Bill bruford.
yes, i do too, thanx a lot for sharing and remembring
The Bates/Ballamy duo was my favorite. I started playing Eb Peck horn and tenor sax because of them!
Truly wild performance, i love it!!!
Great performance. Thanks!
I have just fallen off a cliff and am enjoying every abrasion on the way down.
My favorite Earthworks track, I love the Stomping Ground version, a part in the middle of that version is so bizarre. Did my own cover of it a year ago.
Great!👍
El gran Bill siempre rodeado de músicos fantásticos.
Yes
Just fucking blazing! This record had such an impact on me when it came out. It felt like it dropped from outer space. So sad I never got to see this lineup play live.
Bill
Extraordinario y cautivante
I will never forget his solo part in the show at Club Quattro in Osaka.
Just blew my mind.
4 hands…one keyboard…Brilliant
You should check out "2 girls 1 cup" if you like this, genius scat performance... brilliant.
Not many people know this but bills earthworks LPs were made entirely of fart noises put in a fairlight. Trevor Horn is a genius
Finally
Thx B!!
Brilliant!
Great video.
my favourite piece from 1987 album!|
What a risky, lovely snapshot.
My only comment here besides, "This kicks ass!" is this... WHY do we not see camera shots of Bill when he's kicking ass starting at 4:46 ?!?!?
FANTASTICOS¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Pure alchemy!
Mega.
0:06:24 Well that's the tuning up all done, when does the music start?
Essences of early Herbie Hancock ie: 1973 Sextant
I know you a retired more or less but Danny Carey from Tool has been my new Bruford so to speak as the best syncopated drummer of our time
Where's me shirt?
Sounds alittle zappa influenced.
