For some reason, the South American countries were always well disposed towards the sort of things I liked: Yes, King Crimson and later on, Earthworks. Here we are with a Tim Garland composition Bajo del Sol, featuring bass clarinet, at an Earthworks concert in Buenos Aires. As the band progressed, the administrative and social media stuff became overwhelming. Tim is a gifted composer and instrumentalist who took on much of the Earthworks writing as I slowly ran out of steam.
An alumnus of Chick Corea’s band Origin, Tim's piece channels the Hispanic flavour of some of Chick’s composing. Tim can hold his own in stellar company on tenor or soprano saxophones, flute or bass clarinet, all of which he featured in the later editions of Earthworks. One of the great advantages of being a leader is that you can invite into the band those who seem to know more about the mysteries of music-making than you do; people like Tim, Gwilym Simcock, Allan Holdsworth, Django Bates. Then you let them loose. Then you listen and learn.
Bands tend to have a greater chance of staying together if the participants’ needs are in balance with the leader’s needs. In Earthworks we had an experienced leader who was learning from musicians half his age while benefitting from their youthful energy and (frequently) superior music skills. In return, those less experienced players were getting an international platform on which to display their abilities, reasonable pay, and a decent single hotel room with clean sheets. Everyone’s cool!
I wrote a chapter on this topic in "The Cambridge Companion to the Drumkit' (Cambridge University Press 2021) if you want to dig deeper.
Bass clarinet / sax: Tim Garland
    Piano: Steve Hamilton
    Bass: Mark Hodgson
    Drums: Bill Bruford

Lo fantástico de BB es que cuando toca rock sabemos que es un batería de jazz y cuando toca jazz sabemos que es un batería de rock , es el jazzista del rock y el rockero del jazz .
    Auténtico maestro

Eye-opening performance by prog veteran Bill Buford on a jazzier side of his career.
Lovely composition by Tim Garland Bill -- and your solo at the end is wonderful.
When you toured the states in '78, on your One of a Kind album, my brother and I stood in front of you to see this same sort of brilliant performance.
Then in '81 at the same venue (Agora Ballroom in Atlanta, Ga) we got to see you again, on the Discipline tour with Robert, Tony and Adrian.
Thanks for these great memories and more from your illustrious career, Sir Bill.
    Exquisite!

Beautiful, flawless, and exquisite performance. Bruford makes it look easy because to him it’s so effortless. A true musician’s musician.

Something about Bruford captivated me from the first time I hear Roundabout in 1972. That snare sound, that different feel, that inclination to play outside the box without over-playing. I hate that he retired, but I love that her retired on top. My drum hero.

What a brilliantly inspiring band of musicians… always loved BB’s economic style of creating such complex rhythms, and his choice of musicians are always top notch and interesting .. and oh that bass clart..

The main ride? It's a Paiste Signature Dark Energy ride, I believe.... I'm a drummer and had a period of searching for the "perfect" ride cymbal, and ended up with the same ride. Only later found out that BB used the same, which is cool.

@@PurpleBled it's not popular and it's nothing if not a specific niche.. but interesting take. People do follow Bill from Yes primarily, so some people who don't play kit or like Jazz are going to run into this, but from observing Yes fans from a distance, quite a lot of them are still trying to figure out why the band did what it did 50 years ago and didn't really leave that space.

I can tell you one reason, Bill.
Many keep the rich culture of the Spanish heritage, though some do not acknowledge this.
Me, as a Spaniard, I'm really amazed at how well they master the language, with a flowerish vocab (gone in Spain 😔)
They speak like reading a book, sometimes, specially y Argentina or Uruguay, all of them really.
Their problem is politics, totalitarian communist, indigenist etc. It's really worrying to see how countries are falling into this. Chile and Colombia were the last ones to have this regimes that will make them more poor 🤔

The problem with "spaniards" like you is that you cannot understand other cultures, and it seems you prefer to live in the middle ages having a "king". Please do not give us your cheap politics comments here.
