The material here was pretty new to the band, and I should have liked to have enjoyed playing this a bit more. The hybrid (half-acoustic half-electronic) kit was in its infancy back then. Tough to play because the sounds are emanating from different sources, not always under my control. The acoustic part is OK, but the electronics are coming from some speakers that I can’t control. The electronics have a comparatively limited dynamic range in comparison to the acoustics; so the former were always too loud or too quiet. That got better over time.
Never mind the drummer - the performances from Django (keys and tenor horn) and Iain (tenor and soprano saxophone) are worth the price of admission alone. #billbrufordsearthworks
Love Earthworks!! And the always innovating Mr. Bill Bruford🙏🥁💯🎶
I enjoyed this a lot. All of them are simply blazin' away on their own instruments.
Again. Thank you Bill. Happy!
I was fortunate to catch Earthworks on this tour when they played at Nightstage in Boston! What a band… thanks for sharing this, Bill!
love the part in 6 + 7
I had the pleasure of meeting Bill at the first Earthworks gig at the Queen's Hall, here in Edinburgh. Nursing a pint, and fielding questions on various topics from we fans. An absolute gentleman, and extremely patient. I had dabbled in drums back then, although I started late and was, frankly, too lazy to make anything of it, but it left me with an appreciation of the craft, and, at that point especially, of the developing electronic drums thing, led by Simmons of the UK. I had learned through a magazine of the new Simmons kit, the SDX, which was supposed to elevate electronic percussion to a new, incredible level. Bill said that he was indeed working with Simmons, and testing it, but that it remained "a bit of a beast". Not long after, I had the great pleasure of seeing Bill again, at the Edinburgh Playhouse, as part of Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe (Yes, without Chris Squire, sadly), and he seemed to make great use of the SDX, although I understand from references elsewhere that it could be a highly temperamental system. Always a pleasure to watch Bill play, regardless.
7:20 this is pure magical!!!
unbelievable versatility :D
First heard up north on yes family album and loved it. Bought the earthworks cd and wasn't disappointed

43:28 this segment has a killer bassline, what's the name of the track?
"Never mind the drummer" -- oh sure Bill, whatever you say, haha! Seriously though, Bill's right of course: Django and Iain are both great, reminding us what a great talent scout and bandleader Bill was, not to mention drummer & composer. Love how some Earthworks Mark 1 tunes resurfaced in the all-acoustic Mark 2 edition! And hey let's hear it for bassist Mick Hutton -- wonder what it's like to anchor a band where the drummer is playing equal parts rhythm, harmony and melody?

Hi
Thank God that those horrible Simons drums disappeared
Ooo thanks Bill, nice stuff! You and Adrian Belew were my inspiration to get into electronic kits.
Have all EW albums on original EG vinyls. LOVM all!
I bought their first album on cassette(stil have it) and then saw them live at the Coach House in SJC, never heard them on jazz radio though. 😮
Later I caught the next incarnation a couple times at the old Catalina Bar & Grill. A couple of beers makes this music even more profound.
This formation has found a space in my heart and it never leaves.
Coherent and yet a valid counterpoint to the usual names of fusion/electric jazz of the time.
My greed for performances like this is untolerable…
My best wishes for the channel, Mr. Bruford.
A couple of points. Am loving Bill's channel. His descriptions have a touch of the Fripp about them - well mannered, polite, a tad understated and unintentionally amusing. And Django at keys reminds one of the freewheeling Pat Moraz.
I wanna meet you, Bill. Teach me 🥁
I completely love this album! Superb.
So innovative!
Bill, you can't keep re-inventing the instrument, gimme a break
Very beautiful concert! Grazie :)
Hi. Bill. Can. I. Meat. You. Some. Time. Love you 😍
I remember this, I was there
Thanks for introducing my to Django Bates. His phrasing hits me in the gut like Lyle Mays’ and Scott Henderson’s. Not that those three are similar, but somehow for those three musicians I’m always pulled straight in by the phrasing. Precisely fluid…maybe that’s it.
why dont i see him with miles on this here tv shows?
free form lives
ah am mooved1
The great ones make it look easy.
You are too humble in your descriptions good sir! "Never mind the drummer..." ha!
Did Crimson use this piece as a way point for waiting man?
Maybe the other way around!
I'd like to imagine Bill getting so angry at the electric kit and kicking it around on stage then exclaiming, "sorry folks, there will be no show tonight"
Have you seen that video yet where he tells the guy it’s really funny it’s not that but it’s really funny at the beginning of the interview. He says Bill Buford says the guy was having too much coffee. It’s really freaking out. It was funny. Oh my God I laughed so hard when I saw that.
