The guitarist, Will Swan, (the one who actually created the band), said in an interview in 2018 that the band name was genuinely just "the least bad option of the names they came up with". They were planning shows and they couldn't go out on stage with no band name. And so they chose "Dance Gavin Dance" :)
i heard it was named after his pet turtle.
I thought Gavin was Jonny Craig's pet turtle or something.

Jonny Craig was by far their best. He had so much soul in his voice. He did their old demos as as well as Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean, and both Downtown Battle Mountain albums.

There is actually an unofficial sixth member, Andrew Wells, who is the frontman for his band Eidola, and Dance Gavin Dance’s touring guitarist and backup vocalist. He features in two songs on the two most recent DGD albums, and has been touring and performing live with them long enough to be called the unofficial sixth member of the band by fans.

That guitarist is mesmerizing live he’s so talented
Absolutely love this band. At one point one of you said " I didn't know what was going on, but I loved it" that pretty much sums up their entire discography. Jon Mess (screamer) always spits out random sometimes deep lyrics while the clean vocalists swoon over like some angel. This band has a long complicated history with different band members coming and going but the spotlight was always on the clean vocalists. Guitarist Will Swan, drummer Matt Mingus, and screamer Jon have been the only consistent members. Although Jon had to miss an album due to a battle with Lyme disease during the Kurt Travis years. Would totally recommend listening to a song next featuring Jonny Craig back from their first album then one featuring Kurt Travis. They all brought something new to the table. Saying goes Jonny brought the soul, Kurt brought the funk, Tilian brought the pop.
Next song should be Its Safe To Say You Dig The Back Seat. Off the first album it features a powerhouse Jonny Craig performance as well as a very prog instrumental.
After that I would say Carl Barker featuring Kurt Travis. A very funky song indeed! Sorry for the long comment!
Tilian is a countertenor which is a very high male voice type. Combine that with years of developing his mixed voice (blend of chest and head resonance voice) and you can achieve these high notes.
The song is about cults, and religion in general, in my opinion. The relationship between a “savior” and the “savior’s” people. DGD is art.
I heard that the name came from a friend of Craig's, a kid named Gavin that always danced at parties and would get cheered on. He passed away at a young age and he wanted to name the band after him. Not sure if it's true or not, but it's something to look into.

welcome to the dgd cult 😁😌 a few people have commented about tilian’s solo stuff but you should also check out secret band! it has most of the members of dgd but jon is the only vocalist. they started it as a side project they tried to keep secret from jonny craig when he was in the band (hence the name secret band). i recommend either projectile comet or moon!
4:25 the lead singer of linkin park has that really long scream in given up (banger btw) it's mad similar to this chorus. and linkin park is pretty high singing

the imagery in both this video and betrayed by the game are so on brand with the bands lyrics its insane. addiction and being stuck in their own path. a lot of it reads to me as coping with being a band and theyre writing about it and living it. and also its got another 4th wall breaking feature where it talks about the fans eating up their problems as well because they deal with the same thing. and the fans addictive cycle towards the band is the same toxic pattern that props up the band itself while also holding their personal growth back.

I heard the name came from Craig as his buddy Gavin loved to dance and he unfortunately passed away in a car crash I believe. I could be wrong but thays what I know from my knowledge, if anyone wants to correct me if I'm wrong pls lmk!

I love how a bunch of people find it unfathomable to karaoke this...and how my friends react when I nail it 😁 of course its hard to keep the vocal chords going on a consistent flow over various songs without proper preparation especially and hey studio enhancement does play a role in this video of course but needless to say they are a masterpiece live aswell to be able to be constant song after song. Props
Tilian's range is really close to mine (he can go a little higher with more clarity than I can though), but I was so happy I found DGD a few years ago because it gives me something to sing along to that isn't a type of music that I don't love. The only other that has come close is Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria.

I’m a tenor singer. I can sing Chester’s singing effortlessly. He thing that made chester so great, he was singing genuinely, Cathartic lyrics that he obviously wrote. It’s embarrassing but Chester’s death hurt me for a year. We lost a great Rock singer
