Fellow mobile home resident here. I ran across your delightful little woven strip project you began last year when I was feeling a bit run down and overwhelmed. I then had a massive anneurism from which I managed to recover and am here to say it's wonderful to just go back and pick up those wonderful projects as they fit in to my mood and level of stamina. I missed the whole continuity bit, but am loving the availability of the projects as they stand alone beautifully! Both you and Marion's World helped my recovery along beyond what I can express. The words Thank you are a bit hollow, but they're the best I can come up with.

Sound advice, thank you Katherine. Having a space you can go to that has all your supplies ready to hand has made an enormous difference to me. It the same with drawing and painting, don't pack it away. If you just have a tray with your supplies on it is easy to go. They say the hardest part is starting.

I have only hand stitched my whole life. I can't sew on a machine to save my life. Hand sewing is satisfying for me. I just finished a quilt for my son. My family cherish the work and thought put into gifts. Every stitch is therapeutic. I also I feel my connection to the person it is made for. Sewing has gotten me through the hardest parts that life gives sometimes.

Loved all of this 💜 and about “Zombie time” - my mom always called this winding down time “vegetating” (with a negative connotation) but I have been rethinking that; vegetables are gathering nutrients to share with the world, and growing, and ripening. If my down time helps me to vegetate in that way that is certainly a positive. Nothing recharges me more quickly than stitching away on a little bit of cloth and feeling the thread hold my world together. 🧵🪡 Thank you for inspiring me!

I love how stitching gives me permission to make it up as I go along...to follow my muse without a lot of confining judgments from my brain. I was showing a friend our current projects and she said, "You are 'feeding the holy' ". That really touched me as being a truth. "Feeding the Holy" feels like an act of deep connection with life. Once again, creativity is power.

I am a very process oriented person so I was thrilled to discover the idea of slow stitch about 5 years ago. I found the small stitch projects for the journal to be very effective when I feel blocked; a great way to try out new stitches and not feel like I'm "risking" a bigger project.

There are so very many wise word in this segment. Thank you for all of them!
I too stop stitching with the needle threaded. I deliberately take a few stitches with a new length of thread, then stop. That way, the work is ready to pick up and begin again, without having to “find the thread, find the needle, thread the needle, make a knot.....”. I can begin with a stitch, which is the whole point, isn’t it?
Enjoy your Friday and weekend Kathryn.

The ‘too many projects’ was an interesting query. I usually have more than one book on the go at any one time. Similarly with creative projects; various stitching projects, several journals, different types of writing. I used to feel shame for rarely moving from start to finish. Now I take joy in the variety available to me. The focus on process has liberated the creativeness and increased the pleasure. A lot of that is thanks to you and your channel. 🙏🏻 I also follow Marion and am in awe of her phrenology wheel project - from small beginnings….

That way I could have the pleasure of some elements of each in one project. I’m hoping it will work. I’m getting the fabric together for the coverlet. Hope to start soon. I will start with you on the February block and play catch up on January’s block. I enjoy your videos even if I didn’t sew along. As I am getting older (70) it takes me longer to do housework and projects. I like all the projects that I have started, but physical limitations dictate what I can do when and for how long. I would just add that heat helps me to ease stiff or painful joints in my hands (e.g. resting my hands on a hot water bottle, or putting my hands in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes), and just switching activities (e.g. from knitting to sewing) can also work wonders..

Are dandelions good candidates for eco-dying? They are my favorite and I always wondered 🥰

I haven't ever used them but they are not known to contain dye pigment as far as I know. They might give the kind of vague, pale tan colour that most plants do.

Just a note for the person asking about hand pain: I see a lot of stitchers work with a rolled up cloth in their hand to serve as a cushion and perhaps to prevent them from gripping too tightly? I don't know exactly what keyword to search for or I'd try to provide a link. Perhaps someone else in our lovely community can offer further advice along this line?

I know how that person feels about feeling left out/behind only because last year I was behind a bit in the slow stitch journal and I missed out in getting my friendship star in the group photo. I think I will be forever sad about that. Only because I Love this community so much. Yes, I am sappy. 😂

in reference to the "pause button" question. I retired a bit over a year ago and have been stitching to my heart's content. There are some things I have seen on you tube and thought maybe someday. If the idea stays with me, I go back and find the video, put on the watch later list. I have accomplished a slow stitch bowl. It's nearly complete, just doing when I feel inclined.

It was a plain Calico cotton curtain onto which I machine stitched lots of scraps of cloth, mainly upholstery samples from those sample books, a neighbour in France gave me a load. ❤️

I mentioned Cotinus, buddleia, Cornus, Geranium, Coreopsis, Rosemarinus and Salvia, I hope that helps. Those are the botanical names so should be universal. ♥️

Creativity is a personal process and in my view no one should judge another’s preference or performance as to style… it would be a sad and boring world should we all do the same 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sadly our recycling won’t take paper that has glue, it has to go in the landfill waste. I have to be really careful when making journals. ❤❤❤

Why do you make the distinction between 'fabric' and 'cloth?'

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales  День тому +3

I started saying cloth around the time I started slowstitching, inspired by a retired tailor who came on some of my workshops, he always said 'cloth'. It's just an arbitrary distinction but I find cloth a more gentle word and maybe more suited to old, worn repurposed cloths than fabric that I think of as new, by the yard (or metre) off the bolt. Absolutely no basis in fact of any kind, just an arbitrary distinction of mine, a foible. 😉❤️
