very interesting video ! As a Belgian (Fleming) it's always interesting to see how foreigners look to Belgians. I didn't know that a lot of things are considered to be expensive in this country, such as public transport. But I guess you're right, I almost never take public transport because it is not very convenient, it takes you 2,5 hours to get to the coast while the coast is only like a 75 km. away... And yet still expensive. Not the ideal situation. I would advise expats to buy a car with several persons to cut on expenses, hopefully the group can then efficiently use that car, I've seen Chinese students do that in order to get their food from a Brussels big Chinese foodstore. And investing in a bike is not my piece of cake since this year in 2021 it rained like more than 300 days out of the 365. It just doesn't stop raining. We experience climate change as 3 years ago there was a drought lasting for 5 months and we were one of the driest regions in Europe ! The weather really is unpredictable and seems on the border of several continental influences (warm influence from the south against humid influence from the Atlantic Ocean against arctic cold from Siberia...) Bye

As an Indian man living in Belgium past many years, I find public transport in Belgium convenient than driving through all those traffic jams. Many cities here have enough buses, trams, metros, and trains to travel throughout the country. Though public transport is quite expensive it would be economical to take an abonnement . True, weather is unpredictable here.....but many in West Flanders ( I live here in Brugge) brave, rains and wind and bike to work, shop etc and back

also interesting for foreigners I think (and based upon my foreign travels abroad comparing other countries to my native country Belgium): you might want to consider exporting chocolate abroad as a family gift since we are very cheap when it comes to chocolate. I compared the price of a large Milka tablet (chocolate + nuts) and in Belgium it would cost you around 3,4€ while the same tablet will cost up to e.g. 15€ in South America !! Although Belgium does not produce the cocoa beans we do process them into chocolate and we are at the base of it !! A "praline" here in Belgium has a mean price of 0,5€/piece while in Japan one pays up to 8€ each !! Calculate the difference... In South America they chopped my given chocolate up like a salami (because of its price) = totally crazy behaviour...I had to stop them "raping" that nice chocolate... And chocolate is healthy !! But then you have to buy the dark chocolate called 'fondant' which has at least 50€ or more in cacao butter mass...

Very good information for the new comers or expats in Belgium. I am from India living here past many years. Yes, public transport is expensive here, but if you take a year ticket ( to use buses, trams and metros with same ticket), it is cheaper. But still...it is expensive. Belgium, like you mentioned is bicycle friendly nation, encourage its use, or even walking...and discourage cars or vehicles, especially in the center of town, where parking charges are much to pay per hour. In my city of Brugge, they even close roads in the center in weekends or other festival days...allowing pedestrians to walk or bike on the road. Year after year, in many cities and towns they are making it difficult for car drivers to drive in the city center. Some of the streets here are called " Fietsstraat" means Bicycle street. That means, cars are allowed but have to keep behind the bicycles. Any small traffic violation....big fines here!
Yes, most of people here give importance to time keeping, punctuality especially at workplaces, meeting each other mostly with prior appointments is a norm. But at small villages, people do visit each other spontaneous. I do sometimes go to meet few close Belgian friends , just calling them few minutes before ( I am always welcome there). Sometimes my Belgian neighbours come over, which I dont mind. But people prefer to make concrete plans with friends or relatives ( Including me).

Hey, thank you for this very informative video. I have seen a few of your videos before, but never realized that you live in Gent. The places from your bike plot and the Kringwinkel shot did look similar this time. Good to know that, I am also living in Gent for more than a year now. And thanks for the Expat group idea, it is helpful.

Parenst have a lot of money(sold their business for over 4 million.)
They still won't buy a new car, only buy second hand.
Their full option BMW X5 was like 30k cheaper because it had driven a few 100 kilometers as a test vehicle.
And we were taught to generally be a bit cheap.
We don't save money on things we do want, but it's really about not wasting money. It doesn't matter how much you have, waste is waste.
I like that general attitude honestly. It's better for the planet as well.
Moved house this year and most of the furniture there we sold online for an apple and an egg(cheaply). If you keep an eye open for good deals there's is plenty to grab.
