  • This week Scott is joined by Dr. Agnieszka Golec, the world’s expert on collective narcissism. Scott and Agnieszka dive deep into this relevant and rich topic, touching on the effects that this thinking has on broader society, how it has fanned the flames of populism around the world, and how it can be curbed to bring people closer together and foster more peace.

An excellent podcast for our current world stage. Individuation at a global level, with inner work driven by personal responsibility and contemplation of personal processes can serve as a way out of collective narcissism. That is a personal experience driven by a quest to understand my own narcissistic human nature that simply didn't and doesn't fit in any of the current collective narcissistic groups. Thank you Dr. Golec…your podcast made a lot of sense to me.

I view populism as different than narcissism. I am not liberal or conservative, because I just see most politics as highly corrupt, and it doesn't matter what you say you believe as a figurehead. It matters what you actually do (we used to care what politician's track records actually were and we kept track of that), and I do not see many political movements now which are actually helping people to live more fulfilling lives. I think populists see this, too, and want to go back to the old days, which I do not think is going to happen. There is too much corruption. I don't know what the solution will be, but the disenfranchised pointing fingers and calling each other crazy doesn't seem like it will be the solution. I hope it doesn't take another world war to get people to see common ground again.

A study of residents of countries at war shows that people with higher levels of collective narcissism are more likely to support military action, even if it results in death and injury to their fellow citizens. The example of Russia shows this. Collective narcissism has nothing to do with concern for in-group members, but only with collective, inhuman "greatness.

Could the same be said of Israel?

It is out of my research focus, while any society during the war reveals signs of the collective narcissism. The other question is who is right and who is wrong, but it is not psychological but political question.

This is what happens when west wants to defend from migrants send by west to west. Deal with it. Agnieszka should talk a little about EU collective narcissism and exploitment of Europe for their benefit alone. Let's say, ie, extortion of Orthodox by Catholics (like Ukrainians, Serbs, Romanians, Bulgarians, Greeks).
Of course they are working nicely with protestants on this. Go figure all the colonial countries.
The best part... Turkey. Geez I love how Turks f...d you over.
And I warned you what happens if Kosovo isn't returned to us. Pandora opened.
So you decided to sacrifice Ukrainians after us. Now it's your turn.

I'm going to take it a step further than categorizing us and them because collective narcissism ultimately favors us and DEHUMANIZES them

If there is a collective trauma there must be collective narcissism as well.

As i just implied to another comment, there are many things that happen collectively. But that doesnt mean they are linked to Narcissism. She is talking about a Group feeling entitled and deserving of special treatment. I'm still watching, but i dont think she's saying it's a positive reaction to trauma. At the moment she's speaking about collective Narcissism with its tendency towards group violence and hate.

I meant it's one of the reasons collective trauma exist, rather than a form of maladaptive reaction.

I just watched Dr. Ramani’s episode and came to watch this episode on collective narcissism when the an ad break came about 3 minutes in from Turning Point USA spouting some racist and misogynistic nonsense about Black people. Are you choosing which ads support your show? Is this channel ok with that type of ad revenue?

Resilience is a great thing, and has nothing at asll to do with barcissism. They aren't opposites of each other.

@johnmoyer99 if you wish to then i would need you to explain. But i've only watched the beginning. She was talking about Nazism and hatred towatds Jews, and i dont think Naxis were victims of collective trauma... but they coud be...perhaps the way of raising childrwn was a bit brutal. Or maybe you mean victims of collective narcissism, may be collectively traumatised?

I like this idea of collective resilience. It would have to be something like a conceptualisation if the ingroup as healing and supporting collective whose common ties and values are psychological resources for individual group members

Interesting episode, however the way it’s presented, so full of statistics, makes it dry and complex instead of engaging. It would be better to focus on interpretation expressed in approachable way.
