  • NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a discussion of sexual assault.
Despite strides in promoting body autonomy, sexual liberation, and gender equality, societal and political stigmas continue to shadow discussions about sex and pleasure in every corner of society. Open and healthy dialogue around sex remains elusive, leaving many individuals without the knowledge they need to navigate their own sexuality confidently. Moreover, pervasive feelings of shame hinder the embrace of sexual empowerment, particularly for women, often disregarding the profound impact that trauma and mental health have on personal agency. But what can we do to cultivate more open conversations about power dynamics, sexuality, and gender in our everyday interactions? How do we dismantle entrenched societal taboos and insecurities to empower individuals to embrace their bodies and sexuality more fully? Dr. Sara Vogel, a Pacific alum and sex educator, will shed light on promoting inclusivity and normalizing conversations around sexual empowerment and pleasure. Dr. Sara Vogel is a playful, dynamic, trauma-informed sex educator who is creating a world where conversations around sex and pleasure are normalized. For over fifteen years, she served as a leader in higher education, most recently working as a Title IX Coordinator supporting survivors of sexual and relationship violence. In 2022, Dr. Vogel launched her podcast, Ladybits and Leadership, to host authentic conversations on the intersections of gender, culture, power, sex and pleasure. The podcast became a sensation and launched her educational company to new heights.
Dr. Vogel now speaks at colleges and universities to continue the fight to close the orgasm gap, liberate sex and promote pleasure. She recently was selected as a 2024 Fulbright Research Chair exploring how to decolonize and re-indigenize sexual wellness and empowerment education-focusing specifically on Hawaiian and Pasifika narratives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
