FIRST LOOK: 2024 Porsche Macan - Best-Selling Porsche Goes Electric
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лип 2024
- This is the new Porsche Macan, and it is now an electric car. Which is a punchy move by Porsche. When the Cayenne and Macan SUVs are your bread and butter models globally (with the Macan being Porsche’s best-selling model in the UK), going full EV early feels… bold.
There will be two initial models - the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo - both of which will be on Porsche’s new 800-volt PPE (Premium Platform Electric - which is incidentally the first time Porsche has electrified an existing model), both with dual-motors and all-wheel drive, and both get the same 100kWh battery, of which 95kWh is useable.
Range is slated at 380 miles for the less powerful Macan 4, 367 miles for the faster Turbo, so you’ll be looking at high 200s in the real-world. Which is all very nice. But it wouldn’t be a Porsche if it were slow or cumbersome, so Porsche hasn’t skimped. The Macan 4 puts out just over 400bhp at max and hits 62mph in 5.1 seconds with a 137mph top speed. The Turbo is capable of 635bhp with launch control, can hit 62mph from rest in just 3.3 seconds and run on to a 162mph max.
Currently, a basic Porsche Macan with a 263bhp turbo petrol 4-cyl engine costs £53,400. The most expensive six-cylinder Macan GTS weighs in at £71,700. That’s good value. But, inevitably, the electric version will set you back more - it’s priced at £69,800 for the Macan 4 and £95,000 for the Macan Turbo.

The new Porsche Macan has gone EV only. Good move? Or bad?
I’m definitely surprised with this move I think they should do both
Would have thought a Hybrid & an Electric model would have made more sense, but I'm sure these will be quite popular despite the higher cost of entry. Range is pretty decent (Claimed 381m vs 264m for an IX) so coupled with EV tax benefits will likely be popular with business people who charge away from home frequently.
Very sad. At least it looks decent.
Why on earth would EV be good 😂
It looks awesome and will drive just as well.
If the Taycan had one too many Krabby Patties…
Yeah, it went all they way to the thighs.
And then it will explode.
Can the Macan play the clarinet better than squidward?
@@TopGear I’m not sure about clarinet, but I do know it’s better at painting than he is…
HAHAHAHA
Nobody knows what that means
I LOVE how Porsche kept the door handles classic. Unlike Tesla, BMW or Benz with the retractable door handles.
I like what BMW did with the i1X, seems like a good middle ground for usability/looks/aero
Enjoy it while it lasts 😅
Which BMW has retractable door handles ????!!
Stop Making Stuff up.
BMW actually has normal door handles lol
@@futurehofer1564 that's what im saying. lol
The looks have grown on me since I saw the leaks but that is quite the price hike.
The used Taycans at those high depreciation prices on sale are mightily appealing now.
I want to know if they have made the battery platform modular? As it stands EVs are almost throwaway items after 8-10 years because some will need a full battery swap by that point - which is excruciatingly expensive. So the depreciation for EVs is off the charts. If they've made it so that the battery can be easily refreshed for a fraction of the cost of an entirely new battery, that would make this more compelling. I'm sad Top Gear doesn't mention anything about this in their review.
@@PaulEubanks Could you clarify which EVs need their batteries replaced after 8-10 years. Most EVs have warranties on drivetrain and batteries till 8 years anyway?
@@PaulEubanks Battery innovation has strongly improved the lifetime. Even the first Tesla Model S from the 2010s are still driving on their first batteries to this day with over 1.000.000 km. Most modern ICEs don't make it over 350.000km. And with the newest gen the battery will realistically last up to 20-25 years and 2-3.000.000 km.. Unless there is foul play involved (planned obsolescence)
@@PaulEubanks You can replace the battery pack on any EV so they’re all modular. Don’t know why you’d “upgrade” a battery pack. You realize the control modules, thermal management, electrical architecture, etc will all be different and upgraded too right?
Show me proove of that..
The tesla model s with almost 1 million kilometers has gone throu motor changes and also got a new batterie so what you say is bs my friend@@user-qv5lr1sy9o
The world is not ready for an all electric macan
My world is ready👏
Totally nailed morphing the Taycan design language into an suv.
It does remind me a lot of the 1st-gen Cayenne for whatever reason, and I both love and hate its styling for that.
At least they can fund the 963 programme with it...
RIP Macan
Taycan visit his grandparents house 😂
Porsche must be limiting the zero-60 speed to keep the Taycan relevant. All around, seems like a great EV. Plenty of range, Porsche dynamics and tech. Going to be a huge seller.
The Macan Turbo has a bit more power than the Taycan Turbo S but with more height comes more weight and more weight transfer, which hurts launch traction.
Nope, won't be a huge seller, it's too expensive now....
the Macan is a SUV. The question is how much the boxter will cost. i suspect very close to Taycan. Anyway, still happy with having just the CT to go around in
Plenty of range we will see! They never appear to do what’s in the can. Plus depreciation is more aggressive than ICE cars I general. With companies now pulling the plug on some EV vehicles. Is this a case of launching because they’ve now got to. Will be interesting to see the reviews not from journalists, but the first owners coming out of the ICE Macan into the electric version. If in fact they do.
Range only if you drive it slowly
EVs with Turbo badging. What a time to be alive 🤯🤒
To be fair now even a Carrera is turbocharged. So the "Turbo" badge had lost its meaning long ago lol
Hoover vacuum cleaners were called the turbo 😊
Agreed. Very weird, i guess turbo now means very fast , not turbo charged
You can set "Turbo Boost" for your Intel CPU in the BIOS settings or there was even a "Turbo" Button on older PC's... I am always amazed that people think that turbo still has the meaning of a real turbo fitted in a car. It has been synonymous with "fast or speed" for more than 20 years. I mean no one complained when they used wording "Turbo Boost" in Knight Rider :D
@@marcobrancorsini2479 That has nothing to do with the fact that this car has no Turbo 😂 it doesn’t make any sense.
I would have liked to see a roof spoiler to hide the ultra-bubbly look.
Looks like a pretty solid vehicle.
No mention of PCCB or at least PCSB on the Turbo. Not dealing with brake dust on my 2021 Turbo has been a gift from above.
Looks like a pretty uninspiring box on wheels
There won’t be any brake dust when regen slows it down
Future of design looks really sad
Said everybody in human history
Would be interesting to see real world efficiency
It looks like a cartoon version of the Gen 1 Macan, for roughly 50% more money. Brave move.
Great review guys, very comprehensive, I really like how you examined and explained the chassis and battery pack. Now I just have to wait for driving impressions.
Hearing about the Macan EV inspired me to configure my own. I started with the base 4 for $78,800, I chose the Papaya metallic for $1,250 to stand out but not be obnoxious, with the 22" exclusive design wheels painted to match for $1,290, I chose black leather for a nice contrast and added 14 way memory, and ventilation at no cost, I spent $3,900 on heated rear seats and 4 zone climate control, I got the LED matrix design headlights at no cost, but spent $370 on a rear wiper! Finally, I got the BOSE surrounded sound system at no cost, and 1 year of 30 minute charging sessions was included. All in, out the door it cost me $92,970.
Nice car I will definitely be looking for one once it's depreciated 60% from list price in 2 years like the Taycan😂
I was hoping for a high 50k base price and 250hp 😆 . It doesn’t need to be this serious for the misses to daily.
You are describing a BMW, lol
@@trevorphillips3922 The last generation is 50 to start and mid 200hp.
@@CincySupercar Oh yeah lol you’re right man. I guess Porsche just wants to move upmarket. Mind you, the BMWs have gotten more expensive too (as has everything).
@@trevorphillips3922 I just need the shitty 2.0 in the new body or basically a super base taycan macan EV 😂
I love Porsche but honestly, I think I prefer the Ioniq 5 N. Can't believe I'm saying it but I replaced my 718 for a i30N (needed the room) and I'd loved it.
They’ve out priced their own customer bracket for a normal macan
I think they’re changing the market from “baby porche SUV” to “porche’s model X”, which is a pretty different sector.
Maybe, but the Model X frankly is a better car for the money. Porsche def has the driving dynamics and build quality but the Macan is tiny whereas the X can easily seat 7. The X and Macan have similar range, 0-60 time, similar price all while the X is a much bigger car (+ supercharging network) @@AkimboOfficial
Absolutely superb, and looks stunning.
That's a nice Citroen C4 Cactus you got there.
A very professional yet fun to listen to video. So much useful new and comparative information is presented as well as realistic questions being asked. Very well done. Liked his concise three word comment, “all Porsche perfect! Subscribed as a result.
Love the b-roll 😂
They just need to make the IC version of this and then I'll trade in my Turbo.
I’m not into SUVs but they nailed the proportions … the front and the back are super short, everything feels like it fits perfectly. It’s a designer dream in terms of proportions with the big wheels, the really narrow windows, etc.
The interior is also a perfected Taycan interior and I love it too!
That's exactly why it has more in common with a sedan than an SUV. Low seats? That's the opposite of why people buy SUVs.
@@krane15you’re right! SUV now tend to turn slowly into sedan, its a kind of trend with the fact that most become electric and they need the right coefficient to have less air drag! Aerodynamics etc! :) It also looks way cooler! Just like the Purosangue, CX-30, The new crown sport, etc I am more into Sedan though and that’s actually what I have! (Mazda 3 Sedan)
It's sad describing an infotainment system in 2024 as "quick" and "when you touch stuff it just happens" is still a necessary comparison
I drove a friend's old Toyota the other day. Manual steering, no AC, and real *rolling* windows - no power anything except brakes.
It was glorious.
Depreciation on wheels
Like all production cars then. EVs are no better or worse
@@harrymc523 Come on, the anti-EV crowd needs something to despirately clutch at.
@@harrymc523 actually EV depreciation is catastrophic. Look at low mileage Jaguar EV’s or even the Taycan.
You say that like there's a car that doesn't depreciate.
This is just likable at the first glance. Well executed and mission succeeded Porsche!
it was -27C a few weeks ago for us. As much as I would like one of these, the upscale hybrids are more trusted. The Lexus nx350h fsport won us over and did not have any issue in the snow and cold. They cant win me over until we get a hybrid version as they do in the Cayenne
Thankfully most people don't experience negative 27c. Perhaps with global warming you might be able to get an EV in the future?
@@almac9203 its possible! more likely they'll grab the hybrid drive train and fit it in the macan
Also what happens when the battery dies? it's just paper weight!
Well.. for now I'm happily keeping my 2024 Macan S combustion engine with the sport exhaust system option and ringing the absolute life out of it thank you very much. Lol.
liking the turbo already
Really excellent video. I wish I could afford one of these. The designs for both exterior and interior are much more attractive than most electric cars, IMO.
Looks like insane
if 635bhp is a thing, why not make a last ICE Macan Turbo S farewell 550-ish car?
That’s what I was thinking. Wish they sent it off with a hoorah
I believe the ice version stays „as long as there is interest“
Because it's a Macan... get a fucking sports car if you want a fast car. It's for picking kids up and doing the shopping.
The price seems to rule out volume sales
Somebody always says that about every new car regardless of category from entry level to ultra luxury. Every single one.
As if the passenger wasn't enough self-involved with the phone, you now have a passenger screen.
Actually, that's how it should work. Driver and navigator.
I've never been a Porsche fan. However, specs-wise, Porsche has hit all the right notes with this car. I'll obviously wait to see independent reviews but, so far, I am impressed.
Top gear focusing on screens and light bars before performance. What are we coming to?
Yeah it indeed feels like its missing the origibal top gear spirit… but honestly already for years
Design is absolute very nice. I hope they bring out some hybrid version. Also the interior design the Navigation screen should be a little bit higher for a more comfortable driving.
We’ve got a 2022 Macan S and it’s glorious. The new electric look impressive. It’s a whole new world.
Your glorified Volkswagen Tiguan that came out in 2015 it’s glorious? Hahaha delusional Porsche fans
You do not own a gt3 dude you have a simple q5 with a different body
@@Rapido20 haha hates gonna hate. But you’d love to have one! 🤣🤣🤣
Really enjoy your car reviews. Great details and great humour. Keep up the great work!
So the Maccan and the tycan have a baby together now !!
Looks like rails are an option? I gotta have my roof-top box for skis & gear ;).
7:26 looks much better
I’m surely not the only one that thinks this is uglier than the current ICE Macan
"turbo" but electric?
Did they explain that the car doesn't have a turbo?
In 2022 you could have paid over $70,000 for a Tesla Model Y so the price is not out of line for this much luxury.
Only a degen living in California would pay 70K for a Model Y.
I think you meant 11kw AC charger not 11kw DC charger.
Either way, you need DC to charge a battery.
@@taideeno you don’t. You can choose to charge at home with 11 kw ac or at a fast charger at 270 kw dc
Beautiful car however will they build a hybrid version? Also for improvement make the Navigation Screen higher not in the middle something from the 90's Also increase the legroom ifor the backseats for long drives.
I still find it stupid they call it turbo…
A plug in Hybrid is starting to make more sense than these full blown EV'S
exactly, when battery is over, what will people do?
No rear wash wipe 😢
Must be great to live in a country where rear visibility isn't important.
I don't think you need a clear view out the back, when you are doing 0-62 in 3.3 seconds.
It's an option to include it
I don't have a rear wash wipe, and never needed it. If the body shape causes no dirt to end up on the back window, no wiper is necessary.
As a German , I don't understand this decision .
Just within the last 4 months i had two long Autobahn trips , one included an extreme rain water conditions one - reminiscent of 1990s F1 rain battles in Spa - , the other was recently in snowy/salt conditions where basically your car just over time gets doused / sprayed / covered in grime .
Both times I used the rear windshield wiper well enough .
Especially in Germany , where on the Autobahn some super speeding psychos can always appear on the horizon in the rear view mirror , it is s-u-p-e-r essential to avoid lane change collisions , I assure you .
But then again , I am an atypical defensive driver who most of the time follows the "Rechtsfahrgebot".
I guess the "smart" folks in Zuffenhausen think Porsche drivers always floor to the maximum and don't need "assistance" like that for us mere mortals.
They probably think something like "where we are going we don't need any rear windshield wipers ! " or "rear windshield wipers? that's for peasants ! "
@@tk80mufa5 you can press a button to view the rear camera feed.
Looks like a sleek jet ski
I thought it was a tall ionic 6 at first
First look, i thaught that was a Polestar 3 😍😎🤗
Absolutely superb, and looks stunning. I’m a petrol head (with a tuned and obnoxiously loud rs6) but love EV’s as well and have an Audi Qtron which is also superb. Unless Audi up their EV game however, I’m going for the turbo macan ev.
I wonder what turbo charged batteries feel like
They probably play a turbo noise through the speakers lol
I like it a lot as an electric car, but I'd still take a Macan S any day both for being $8K cheaper, faster and for the feel of an ICE and PDK
100%. Still a soulless golf cart
I'm not agree with the decision to turn all electric. Taycan's demand is really poor...
The oldest Macan was in sale for a decade, i don't think this will hace the same success.
First glance, I thought it was a Hyundai Ioniq 6
I like the way they tried to integrate the main beam headlights to look like air intakes so it doesn't end up looking like it has that strange new split headlight design trend looks pretty natural might need some time to get used to the back though it's giving me sportback Q5 vibes🫠
q5? lol
Split headlights invariably look terrible, this is no exception.
@afrodezy1 yh the way it slopes at the back strangely but still claims to be an SUV I think it's terrible🥲actually I just realised the underpinnings more of less of the ICE macan is actually a Q5😂bleh...I grew to like the ICE macan though especially in GTS trim its mean💯
@boostav you gotta give them credit for trying😂it ain't that bad I think it's a man looking front end but yh split headlights are a terrible automotive design trend
really intrested to see this agasint the model Y performance. Similar looks , size and specs
I have seen some videos of the test drive. While they couldn’t push the car hard, the range looks very promising
Some really great design and improvements have clearly gone into this, but such a shame there isn’t a PHEV one. I totally get that engineering a pure EV vs. Something that has to accommodate an ICE as well is a completely different exercise, but I will not consider a pure electric car at present so it’s very disappointing that this great entry point into Porsche is essentially now off the cards for me.
Not keen on the rear end
The repeated figures in the video make it a difficult watch
I love that he said to wait until he actually gets to drive it to decide whether to buy it or not. Other presenters sometimes glorify a car before spending good time in it, just simply from theory.
That’s exactly what I think. I have a Macan S and would like to drive the EV back to back with my car before forming any real opinions. The biggest difference is the + 500 kilos of weight between the two vehicles. That may be a real disadvantage to the overall drivability?
Finally starting to get suv styling right...
The glitch effect transition looks cheap. Good video overall as well. Well done TG,
More of a hot hatch than ever. Looks great in the front...not so much in the rear. . Sad its only EV
I wish I could see

I can’t decide if I like the purple color or not. I need to see it in person. We’re on the wait list for one and we’re trying to decide on color
A frunk for your portable power generator, nice 👌
Nah, as a Porsche driver you use the frunk to carry money 😂
@neothehackerV2 excellent my friend 😂😂
This might very well be my first ev. I like this car 😁🏎
Those turbo namings are becoming very silly on electric Porsches... Naming throughout the whole care industry is becoming extremely silly and confusing
Cant wait it to be compared with 5n!
Possible 380 miles range, so real world 250 if you're lucky and all conditions are perfect.
But, I do have a question: have you ever seen, in a highway, an EV to overtake you at a speed over (let's say) 180km/h???
It never happened to me, cause, I guess, whatever the vehicle could be, if they do so, they'll run out of battery in less than 10km
I think they also announced an even more powerful version as the current versions only mirror the power output of the Audi Q6 etron. However, another EV show drove the Turbo version from Munich all the way across the Austrian Alps to Lake Garda without recharging, and concluded it was massively efficient.
wait it actually looks like a good usable car. damn
I actually work at the Porsche development center in Weissach, Germany and I had a run with it as a passenger on our test facility a couple of weeks ago. It drives insanely well around corners and the build quality is insane
Will it come with a gas engine as well? Or its only electric?
@@born1in1a1sauna BEV only for this generation. It is developed from ground up on a new electric platform shared with the Audi Q6 e-tron
@@rubystarcarrera ah, thats sad. But thank you for the reply
Looks like the last version of the VW Beetle from the rear!
well...
Not convinced the Macan 4 will quite have the performance I'd want (when not in 'boost' mode). Seems to offer less than the Model Y, perhaps less space also but admittedly with massively increased interior quality. Macan Turbo starting price too excessive (considering the usual optional extra budget you need to add to Porsche). New or nearly new Macan GTS still the sweet spot for me.
I have the same issue with this car. Price versus performance is not good. I dont understand why Porsche had to make these models so slow. 3.3s with turbo sounds ok but why is the price so high for the same battery.
If the ICE Macan got a similar interior update then it would be a no brainer. GTS would be backordered
Living in Chicago where we just saw a huge pile up of dead Teslas at a super charger during a winter storm, I suspect the new macans will not sell nearly as well in colder climates.
fyi the current macans sell really well here.
EVs aren't quite there yet when it comes to cold. Tesla just released a new update that helps out with this problem by warming up the charging port when you navigate to a charger. However, I'm not arrogant enough to claim that this fixes it to the point consumers would like. EVs are still relatively experimental, with teslas being very common across the country due to price cuts. Despite that, the technology won't be there for at least another few years. Even as a tesla owner, I'd say ICE cars are currently far more reliable in the long run. Although where I live in, LA, is probably one of the best cities for charging and climate for EVs.
Most compressive review of tis car!
Too bad Porsche didn't make those models with a petrol option.
Petrol is dying....
@@Seventh7Artnah, biofuel will be a thing (hopefully)
@@resadrecebli2263 Bio fuel cannot be cheap by nature.... Current synthetic e-fuels are more expensive than race fuel... and it is not possible to scale up production for a number of reasons. Lastly, internal combustion engines have issues that are impossible to fix, such as low energy efficiency, since more than 80% of the energy produced, becomes thermal instead of kinetic. That means 80% energy loss... On the contrary, electric motors have a very low energy loss rate: Approximately 20%. That is 4 times less losses than ICE. Also, electric engines have few moving parts, no gearbox, no driveshaft and no other parts that could break, unlike ICE.... In other words, there is no comparison... Fun fact: In Norway, 90% of new car sales are electric. It's really game over for ICE.
Unless you're a mum taking the kids to football practice it's not the car for you anyway.
There's never really been a need for a Macan to begin with, so....
Do you think the Taycans will get an update to allow the user to control the spoiler
£70k for the base model vs £50k now? Do they think this will still be a top seller at that base price?
How much are BMW and Mercedes EVs?

I love the purple
Can’t wait to see it be drop in value by 50% in 12 months!!!
Cool story 😂
That would be awesome for 2nd hand buyers. Get a 1 year old Porsche car for the price of new chevy equinox
Not a fan of EVs but the Macan blends looks and practicality nicely. Turbo wish list ice for me all day long.
Looks good, but Ev's I just don't like the whole charging inconvenience
Looks like a super cool car. But gotta say, I am not buying an EV anytime soon and I think most of the USA is with me. Just look at the disaster in Chicago with the cold weather. Not nearly enough charging stations for a road trip and even if we did, it would crash the grid. EV's are cool and I hope they work, but it's a no from me right now.
Indeed, they aren't there yet. I have a model Y but I live in LA where these problems will never reach me, but I think ICE cars are far superior to the vast majority of consumers in terms of price, reliability, and service. EVs need more time to catch up before it can be a truly viable option to replace gas cars. I'd only recommend an EV if the city someone lives in has ample chargers(usually teslas) and doesn't get too cold. Even then a gas car would be cheaper on average(aside from getting gas itself vs charging).
Honda HR-V meets Porsche Taycan was the first thing that came to mind, not gonna lie. Want to see it compared with the Maserati Grecale.
Well if you want to lose a shed load of money..yeah all good..i guarantee Porsche dealers forecourts will be full of em after an initial surge..just like the Taycan.
