  • My first game for my 6 x 6 Game Challenge was Cold War Commander.
    This is my first play of this game, so I didn't do everything correctly, but I had a good time. The camera footage is a bit shaky at points. I'm still learning the best way to record these reports and will work on doing them better in the future.
    This game was a small battle set in 1985 between the US and Russia. Each side had about 1,000 points and I played the Encounter Scenario.
    I like the activation mechanism in this game and think it offers an interesting way to reflect the command process.

      Glad you liked it. I thought it might be helpful for folks looking to try this game out. I got a lot of things wrong, but I think it gives a little feel for how the game works.

    I've only played wwii Blitzkrieg Commander II and I love it. I have many videos about it. Good to see Commander series getting some videos.

      I will check out your channel and videos. Maybe it will help me to know what I'm doing wrong.

    You did roll awful for the Americans, however, I am struggling with a platoon of Abrams being wiped out by two platoons of T-55s (very poor tanks in this era) without taking out a single T-55.

      I made several mistakes in this video that would probably have effected the outcome. I'm not going to say these rules are perfect by any means, but don't judge them solely on this play though. :)

      I agree. That would never happen on the battlefield! T-55s are garbage compared to M1A2s.

      You are welcome. I've been reading the Team Yankee rules so I can try them out.

    I only saw the video so far up until the first firing action - your stabilizers don't apply if you're taking a simple fire action. In that case you get full ROF - if you have stabilisers what you get is another action, called move and fire - it allows you to move up to half distance and fire with the reduced ROF, or fire and then move up to half (page 21). Great video, btw!

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому

      Thanks for pointing out that when firing while moving you only get a half move. I missed that. That will make a difference.
      Please let me know if you see me doing anything else wrong.

      You're welcome!!
      Another thing I think you got wrong - sometime in the first turn, your Russians did a move all along a road - that negates the negative distance modifier to your command roll whilst your guys do their full move along the road.
      The save values on a unit hit from the flank is reduced by 1, so the M1's would've had a 4+ save on your third turn flanking Russian shots at them.

      Thanks for the info. It seems I got more wrong than I thought. Good info though. Keep it coming. :)

    Oh, there you go, you mentioned opp fire and suppression.

  • @WARdROBEPlaysWWII
    @WARdROBEPlaysWWII 7 років тому +2

    I use a d10, counting backwards as a way to remember their command roll after each activation.

  • @WARdROBEPlaysWWII
    @WARdROBEPlaysWWII 7 років тому +1

    Also, can units take opportunity shots during enemy movement? Again, I don't know if just BKCII has that.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому +1

      I missed that rule when I played this game. I will try to make sure I use it in future games.

  • @WARdROBEPlaysWWII
    @WARdROBEPlaysWWII 7 років тому +1

    Did you forget Suppression after they take hits? Or, does CWC not have that roll?

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому +1

      Another rule that I missed. CWC and FWC have this rule. It can be good for reducing incoming fire even if you don't manage to kill off the enemy units.

  • @WARdROBEPlaysWWII
    @WARdROBEPlaysWWII 7 років тому +1

    But with the Americans you could've split your forces to send a couple tanks to the flank and two more to the front.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому +1

      I could have split forces, but with only 1 command unit, ordering the flanking force would be challenging.

  • @WARdROBEPlaysWWII
    @WARdROBEPlaysWWII 7 років тому +1

    And I've always used the "Hits stay on." Optional rule.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому

      I missed that optional rule in the book. I will look for it. I'm not sure if I will use it or not, but could make a huge difference in the game.

    • @rastamann2009
      @rastamann2009 7 років тому +1

      Sean Gewecke I always use the Hits Stay on optional rule as well - it's not in CWC but BKC2 but that would be the natural evolution - without it you' probably never remove an M1A2 from the table, for instance.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому

      I might use the hits stay on rule, but want to play a few more games without it. I think it would make games move faster if nothing else.
      I disagree about losing the M1A2s being impossible. I lost all of them in this game.

    • @rastamann2009
      @rastamann2009 7 років тому +1

      When I was referring to the M1A2's, those are the ones with the 2+ save roll (the M1 HA, in the rules, not the M1 105mm which I think were the ones you were using them as) - granted, they'd not be in that timeline, but still...
      If you had remembered opportunity fire and suppression, the CO's Russian T55's wouldn't have survived moving into the open on their 2nd turn, most likely - I'd have taken a shot at each of them with the M1's, if only to suppress them. Then, in the American 2nd Turn, they'd be toast - you'd probably be within 60cm of the Russians and that would mean 6 dice each if they stood still on their first and second activations, and 4 dice each as they pulled away if you managed a third activation.
      Finally, consider that, had you entered and parked in the woods near them, the M1's would have been in cover and the Russians would have needed 5+ to hit them, which would have changed stuff up a bit :)

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому

      I don't see the M1 HA in my book. Which list are they under. Yes, I was using my models as M1s for this battle.
      Good advice on the opportunity fire. I'll try to be sure to make use of that in my future games as well.
      Having additional eyes on a game helps to learn it. It can be a challenge to learn a new set of rules by yourself.

    Glad I saw this vid. I would have been furious if I had bought these rules. 10-20 dice and then saving throws, then a tank takes so many hits then the tank fairy comes along and heals the tank. By god what are you trying to simulate.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  5 років тому

      I'm not trying to simulate anything, just playing a game. :)
      Not every game is for everyone. This game abstracts a lot of things and that is just one aspect. There is an optional rule that leaves hits on the units from turn to turn.
      I'm sure there are other rules out there that would fit better with what you are looking for.

    • @peterfmodel
      @peterfmodel 5 років тому +1

      This is a common complaint about these rules. While I understand the theory that at this scale we are not knocking out tanks but it just does not seem right. In other rules, which use a semi-similar system, they either keep track of this for the following game-turn, or determine if the tank is removed or not during a housekeeping phase. The rules look good and there is good support, but something about them just does not get me excited. On the other hand the state of the art, FFT3 and Modern Spearhead, while good rules, use an older style of sequence of play which encourages the move to line up the best short and let lose the dogs of war tactic. Spearhead does have rules which tried to break this tendency, but that can be overcome. So in summary, if my group used these rules I would be happy using them, and as these rules are activity being updated so I wish them the best in their efforts.

      It does seem like there is less dice rolling here than in Team Yankee, which is good, but that game does have a mechanic that doesn’t let you gang up hits on single units like the T-55s did in this scenario.

    love this, I can only wish to have your setup. I am super green. but I speak a bit of russian. those tanks are soviet tanks советские танки. with soviet troops. they may or may not be russian. saying all soviet soldiers are russian is like saying all US soldiers are virginian.

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  7 років тому +2

      Fair enough. I have just used Russian and Soviet as interchangeable words and I probably shouldn't.
      My set-up here is pretty simple and anyone can put it together. The game mat is just a piece of fabric from a local craft store, the roads are made of felt, cut into strips. The oil tanks are PVC pipe ends that I painted grey and then applied a wash of black shade. The trees were purchased from eBay and glued to poker chips that were then flocked. The tree bases are also felt cut into various shapes that I applied a light dusting with a couple of cans of spray paint. I'm working on some new terrain pieces to add some more diversity to the table.

    I was considering buying CWC, but not now - too much/too many dice rolls for my liking. I use Command Decision rules for WW2, also have a copy of CD for the 'modern' period. However even those rules are very generic. Little in terms of command & control in those rules. So have taken to command and control method from the Fire & Fury rules for the American Civil War rules and adapted the method for Command Decision (WW2 & modern periods). Much less dice rolling, by using D10's instead of D6's

    • @HerooftheTable
      @HerooftheTable  6 років тому

      CWC does have quite a few dice rolls.
      I've not tried the command decision rules. I might have to check them out.

    • @peterfmodel
      @peterfmodel 5 років тому +1

      I would not worry too much about die rolls for fire combat, as long as there is not much effort in calculating how many dice or what to roll. Saying that there is a tendency to dice for everything, such as activating, I am certain the game systems could of created a better system. If you a CD/CA player you should look at FFT3.

      Good to know. I'm mostly just playing with the rules at this point and haven't put any effort into making the forces historically accurate. I'm also limited by my collection of models. Though I have been working on expanding my forces as well.
