My favorite thing is to eat the greens! I also add shredded turnips to my sauerkraut. I fine it adds depth of texture and flavor to home fermented Kraut. Here were I live, many people keep a permanent turnip bed for the greens. Occasionally we will dig up the huge and woody turnips. Those can have the outer part peeled and shredded off the wooden center. That is what I use to make kraut along with some cabbage.

Best mashed potatoes you will ever have is add one turnip four each 5 of the same size of potatoes. Mash the cooked potatoes and turnip the same way. Add just enough heavy cream to get the mash to your desired consistency. Salt to taste and you're welcome.

So true many people still think turnips are "poor people food"! Go figure! LOL 😂
I love turnips but specially the greens. Definitely among my favorites!
I've been trying to get some turnip seeds. For the life of me, I can't get them anywhere in this country!! I really don't understand yesterday went to one of the largest stores in here. Some 15 to 20 varieties of radish and parsnips, etc. Not a single envelope of turnips! WTH!

If you get maggots in spring crops, plan on a fall crop. The flys that lay the eggs that produce the maggots won't be around in fall.

Turnips are one of the few food crops in which you can eat the entire plant. Very efficient. You can also eat them at all stages of growth, so that, in most places with succession planting you can essentially eat them year-round. A great backyard (back-up) food supply. Or in containers, as in All My Secrets of Organic and Container Gardening So Far.
