He indeed does. He's joined the exclusive club of Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. Ronaldo (another athlete who transcended football) might be officially the most-followed person on all social media platforms (Messi isn't far behind), but I suspect that Messi might still be more popular overall (and thus the biggest celebrity on Earth). After all, not everybody has social media accounts or even wants them. Random farmers in Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Peru or Indonesia know Messi, and I doubt that they use Instagram to follow him or Ronaldo 😂.

I'm from argentina and let me tell you this guy is my hero, but not because of how he plays or because what he won, but because he never gave up, he lost so many important matches with argentina, here people hated him because he wasn't winning anything with the team, even his kids said that he should stop playing with the team because of how much the fans hated him, and yet he never gave up, he kept fighting and in less than 2 years he won almost everything that he could win with argentina

You know what makes Messi so great? Yes he’s a football master and he has every statistic and record to prove he is the best. However, one thing about him shines above all else and that’s his humility. I’ll never forget the moment I knew that Messi was the greatest of all time. It was in 2018 when the Argentina players were arriving in Russia and some Argentinians who had flown all the way from Argentina were waiting for them, and they pleaded to every single player who got off the bus to come over and take pictures and sign their shirts. Not a single player coming off that bus acknowledged their own countrymen. Not a single one came over and said hi or took pictures. Not a single one… until Messi got off the bus. He heard their pleas and came over took hugs, took pictures, and signed shirts. That’s when I knew that no matter how famous or rich, or good at football he was, he would always be that kid from Rosario, Argentina who dreamed of one day winning it all for his country. Now, not only has he become the champion of the world, but he has become the champion of our hearts. Thank you football. Thank you Argentina. Thank you Messi 🙏🏽
