- Lionel Messi’s wait for World Cup glory is finally over after Argentina beat France in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday.
It was a final for the ages, with momentum swinging both ways throughout a pulsating 120 minutes before Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty after the game had finished 3-3 after extra time.
Messi, playing in his fifth and final World Cup, scored twice but France’s Kylian Mbappé netted a stunning hattrick - the first in a final since 1966 - as both superstars brilliantly slugged it out on the biggest stage of all.
Messi’s penalty and Angel di Maria’s first-half goal looked to have settled the tie in normal time but Mbappé scored two late goals - one from the penalty spot - in as many minutes to draw France level.

France’s Kingsley Coman saw his spot kick saved by Emiliano Martinez, who was named as the tournament’s best goalkeeper, and Aurelien Tchouameni pulled his effort wide before Montiel secured Argentina’s third World Cup title and a first since 1986.
After winning seven Ballon d’Ors, lifting 38 trophies and playing over 1,000 games in his career, the World Cup was the only title missing from Messi’s collection.
It’s fitting, perhaps, that the 35-year-old clinched that elusive title in such a remarkable game.

In 2014 the Argentinian team was built around Messi and the team was very average with the likes of Biglia, Garay, Lavezzi and Perez. After Scaloni took charge, the team hasn't been all about Messi anymore (although he's still their most important player). Great players like Emiliano Martinez, Romero, Fernandez, Lautaro Martinez, Mac Allister and Alvarez have brought the required stability and diversity that a winning side needs. 💪

I'm a Barcelona and Messi fan and I remember being hurt by Sid's comments. For me he was the GOAT even without international trophies, but I'm so so so happy Messi has finally achieved legendary status at the international level. It was not only a triumph, but a life lesson as well. Messi once gave up with Argentina, back in 2016, and then he reversed his decision, with patience and perseverance, he finally achieved glory with Argentina.

On the other hand football has been my favorite sport as long as I can remember. So seeing Messi play football has always been so special. How can anyone hate him. He is a genius and a humble human being. An exceptional talent who proved his worth more than thousand times and still continuing to do so. He had some bad luck in national games. Only people who lacked an understanding of the game thought Messi didn't perform internationally before winning the trophies he has. This is someone who prior to the world cup and Copa America wins, helped his side reach four finals, was the golden ball winner at the 2014 world cup, best player at a copa America; was the record assister at Copa America's; while also having surpassed Pele as the top international scorer in South American history.
The reality is that teams win trophies, not one player. To try and define Messi's international career by something that is won by a team is illogical. However, the fact he was able to play such a key role in helping lead his side to a world cup at 35 just underlines further why he's the greatest.

People act like reaching a final and losin it is worse than not reaching a final. If u ask people who s better between a player who have played in 10 finals and won 4 and a player who played in 4 and won 4 they would for sure answer the second player. But you are missing the part where the one who reached the final only 4 times have lost in the previous stage of the tournament. Even if Messi lost so many finals , just the fact that he was able to carry his team to that point is worth a lot in my eyes🐐
