    If toy story was real and toys were alive then you'd have a lot of ponies that are grateful for your dedication

    You can tame the acrylic hair using very hot water btw! Or, hot enough that it won’t melt the pony, of course. Some of other doll customizers I followed tends to prefer it over the nylon because it will stay put once you stylize it via hot water. So if you curl it via metal hair clip or even braid it and then pour hot water over ir, remove the clip/rubber band, it’ll stay wavy. It’ll stay down too. I’m no expert though, this is what I observed from being a causal doll custom fan, so maybe test it on an un-customizable pony first. :) great redo, as always

      Thank you for your comment!! 😊😊 For the Peachy I did a while ago I used very hot water and it was amazing, the curls are still intact. Definitely a great idea. I wanted to release this video before the weekend and I actually tried to make curls but the water was too cold and they didn't stick :(

      @@RetroGeekCrafts you can also try heating up a butter knife to tame the hair a certain way, lots of doll artist tend to use that method or the water method as others mentioned.

    • @thechellenator
      @thechellenator 3 роки тому +5

      Yeah, I've seen doll customizers use a heated butter knife to press down hair that is sticking up, use heated chopsticks to wrap hair around like a curling iron, or hold hair in a particular shape with elastics and clips before running boiling water over it. I know some doll customizers will even do multiple rounds of boiling water followed by ice water to really set stubborn hair. :)

      I have some recent ponies (more than ten years old now) and whatever they use for hair will hold a style for a decade+ just with cold water.

      Thank you so much 🤗😊 I tried to make this one extra relaxing because it seems that's what people prefer (over the "enthusiastic" ones). It's quite fun, although it depends on the type of hair (nylon is easier). Seeing how the mane grows is really satisfying, you know that once you've done a strand you (usually) won't have to redo it. You should definitely try it! ☺️

      Thank you so much!! 😊😊 I use a cream called Ican, but any hydrogen peroxide cream (or salon cream, it's what they use to whiten hair) works well. Just make sure it's hydrogen peroxide and not benzoyl peroxide - that one bleaches the pony colours!!

    I love it when you pop the head off and you can see the original colour of the pony. It's always such a contrast. Most of the Blossoms I own are in terrible condition. Is there something about her that just begs for kids to get a bit creative with the scissors and pen?
    You always make re-hairing look so simple. It's my least favourite task. I go with the needle and dental floss method because I've yet to find a re-rooting tool that doesn't break after a couple of goes. I know this is a me thing, because almost everyone I know uses the tool without issue, so I'm probably being heavy-handed or coming in at a strange angle.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 роки тому

      Yes! I love that part too. Sometimes it's completely different. I also enjoy opening the UV chamber for the first time after I apply peroxide. It always looks better than I expected! Rehairing is definitely NOT my favourite part. I usually put some music on and take it slowly. Realizing that wetting the hair made the whole thing easier has been a game-change; my first rehairs were a nightmare, hair everywhere! About the needle, how much distance do you leave between the tip of the needle and the handle? I broke a few needles when there was about an inch. I now cut the needles and make it so there's only 1 centimeter. And it's been fine so far!

  • @lunacorrain

    wow, absolutely loved this video! The calm and the ambient sounds were really great!
    Not a criticism just my personal opinion/preference: I think the second song was a little to fast for the relaxing mood and I would love if you could show more "real time" instead of timelapses especially for the initial cleaning at the very beginning. Like I said before I would love to see a version without music I hope you can get enough patreons to afford better equipment to make it possible, I wish I could join but I can barely pay my rent :(
    Thank you for another great video!

      Thank you so much for your comment and your suggestions! I have been thinking about slowing down in general, and this video is a step towards that. Really enjoyed watching this video! I loved how clear and well lit everything was! No camera shakes, no fuzzy images in and out, no distracting stuff on the desk/table. Thank you!
    I have a couple of tips for you that I wanted to share if I may. I discovered a really good cleaner with either plain baking soda and water OR, for a cleaner that will stick while you work it, use baking soda with liquid dish soap and work it into a paste/cream. Then after, when things are this dirty, I go straight in with acetone (taking care around the painted parts though). And I would use a cotton ball to cover more area faster. I only ever knew hydrogen peroxide to help with yellowing. Do you have good results with HP and the UV lights? Also, along with what the other posters here have noted, dunking the hair in hot water (just before boiling temp) with the hair set in braids (if wanted kinky) or rods (if wanted curly) and letting it sit for 10-15 minutes and then putting it in a baggie and placing in the freezer for about 10-15 mins, then air dry works wonders for saran, nylon, and the like. The style will stay in place - as long as the item is not in a humid location. Lastly, using a flathead screwdriver to run along the area where the hair plugs are will be much faster (and easier!) than using the small pliers. Then, when all the hair is out of the hair shafts, that's when I use my needlenose pliers to pull out the hair bits.
    Hope that info helps you on your next restoration! ^_^

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much for the tips ☺️☺️ It was really kind of you to write them down for me (and others reading!). I hadn't heard of putting the pony in the freezer after doing the hair. That sounds really interesting! Yes, I use HP and UV light and it works really well, especially now that I've duplicated the number of lights I use. But you can replace UV with sunlight if you live in a sunny place (I live in the UK, not much sun around here!)

    If I put peroxide on the eyes or cutie mark, it fades, right?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 роки тому

      Not necessarily, it depends on the quality of the original paint. Ponies made in Hong Kong are almost always fine. It's with the ones from other countries that it can get a little riskier. Just in case, though, it's better to avoid them if you can.

    Yay!!! I just the new G5 movie and saw this! I want to support your patreon once my new job starts! I made a UV light box from your video but haven’t used it yet

      Oh nice!! I'm watching it tonight 😊 Thank you so much but please don't worry, only join the Patreon if you can and want -- I will still make practically all restoration videos available here as well. About the tempera, I always cover the symbols and eyes for Argentinian ponies, because the paint quality is lower. I also tend to cover them when I'm doing a pony for someone else, just in case something goes wrong. But so far, for Hong Kong ponies, I haven't had any issues. Congrats on making your UV box!!

    I am curious, when you rehair doll/ pony and then secure hair with glue, if that is strong enought for children to play. You know, comb hair, braid it, or if it is just for adults to put somewhere and dont touch it anymore .

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 роки тому

      The glue I use is not strong enough for children to play, no. I try to use reversible PVA glue but that's because I keep most of these ponies. However, for commissions I use fabric glue, it's quite effective!

      They are still a little yellow :D For some parts, you can do peroxide treatments but they tend to take longer and longer and give less visible results. So for the videos, especially when I make one for me, I tend to only do 24-72 hours. The pink highlighter marks can take months to fade, I'm more impatient xD

    I've noticed you used to cover the paint (eyes and symbols) with tempera before UV treatment, but now you don't. I can assume that with the white symbol in this case, it doesn't matter either way, but I'm just wondering why you didn't cover the eyes this time?

    • @foxx_kit
      @foxx_kit 3 роки тому +1

      They actually responded to a similar question earlier! You might want to look for that but I’ll paraphrase- Argentinian ponies have lower quality paint, so they protect the symbols and eyes with paint. Hong Kong ponies have better paint so it’s not needed!

      What Katnip said 😊 I always use tempera on Argie ponies (because of the paint quality) and also on the ponies I make for other people, because I'm terrified something will go wrong and I will mess them up xD HK ponies don't need it, the paint is great.
