What a hymn! And what a history ... pastor rinkhard who wrote it certainly went through difficult times yet was able to thank God for all of life’s blessings. Amen
Oh how can i listen to this great hymn without an outburst in tears in deep tears of joy, especially after carefully listening to the powerful words of the first stanza
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (October 20, Pentecost 21), we sang this as our Closing Hymn. It is #839/840 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. My guess is that we sang this because our Gospel of the Day was Luke 17:11-19 (Jesus healing of the 10 lepers).
"But as it is written: No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him." 1 Corinthians 2:9
True... And it's still inspired by God... And, moreover, just imagine Heaven with All Instruments Present... 💯... Wonderful, Splendid.... I'm short of words......
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 22), I played this for Sunday School Assembly. I did so because Thanksgiving is this Thursday.
Another great hymn from this great Choir. What a great composer and arranger John Rutter was specializing in Church and Religious music. He was nothing short of brilliant..
The horn section and drums together with the majestic organ are truly an anthem to God. May God bless all who are involved with the MTC and Orchestra. Collectively, you raise a joyous sound with your voices and instruments to praise our God above.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If 2 Chronicles 7:1-9 is your Scripture of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it.
Wunderbare Sänger und Sängerinnen , viele Grüße in die USA,ihr werdet Weltweit gehört! Wonderful singers, many greetings to the USA, you will be heard worldwide!
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6-7)
I fell so excited each time i listen to these hymns and i have made it a point of duty to listen to it everyday , and at times people around me will call me names and feel so disturbed , but at times i do say to myself ,is it not better i stop it but i can't because i was once a member of my Anglican church choir , but i and my family are still suffering because we are very poor to the extent people now make jest of us , i need help please
these are beautiful material that is put together by Mormon Tabernacle , I enjoy listening to your song ministrations , it keeps me alive in spirit and uplift my soul, more grease to yours elbow
The text of the first two stanzas are based on Sirach 50:22-24: “Now therefore bless ye the God of all, which only doeth wondrous things everywhere, which exalteth our days from the womb, and dealeth with us according to his mercy. He grant us joyfulness of heart, and that peace may be in our days in Israel for ever (KJV).”
Words: Martin Rinkart / trans. Catherine Winkworth Melody: Johann Crüger / harm. & arr. Rutter According to the music publisher (OUP) of this arrangement.
With the current cold indifference to Religion in the West, will.all these marvellous legacies of Christiendom not be lost? Those whose ancestors brought the Bible to Africa have abandoned Christianity to us. Sad.
Sorry, there is no finer instrument for leading humans in praise than an Aeolian-Skinner. please do not question this until you yourself have lead others in the praise of God the Father, Son and Holy ghost with such a marvelous instrument. Please learn the instrument. I promise you, you will never regret doing so.
In the third verse, the MTC does not sing "Eternal Triune God..." but substitutes different words for "Eternal Triune". I'm not LDS. Can anyone explain why the change? In general, I do not like it when words are changed in hymns that have been part of Christian hymn praise for centuries, in the case of this hymn since 1647, adapted in 1840. Thanks in advance for any responses.
LDS theology rejects the idea of the Trinity as taught in Catholicism and most other Christian denominations, so that is likely why the words were altered.
We never rejected the Holy Trinity! Please try to read The Rules of Faith of ours and think of them. I believe that words could be changed like a way to make people know the song was sug by MTC. Many Hymns in christiandom have been altered according cultural context, music tecnichs like a form of sounding better and get speed understanding of public. I think that if any music does not copyright everyone of us are free to rewrite or sing as we wish it. We belive that Trinity is formed by THREE distinctives persons; Two of them have a flesh and bones body and only One has a Spiritual body. They are united in purpose of providing happiness, immortality and Eternal Life to Adam and Eve's children.
Leonardo. Just for the record, I am LDS. As you say we do believe in the Father, Son and Holy Ghost as three distinct personages, who are one in purpose. The majority of Christians (including Catholics) believe that the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are three manifestations of one personage (someone can correct me if I have characterized that incorrectly). This belief is quite distinct to our belief in three separate beings. When most Christians use the term Trinity it is this belief (one being - three manifestations) that they are specifically referring to. So in answering Francis, who is non-LDS, I think my answer is correct - we reject that doctrine, and I am quite confident that that would be the reason why the words "Eternal Triune God" were changed in this rendition of the Hymn. However, thank you for pointing out that indeed we do believe in the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost as that was not clear from my post.
As a liturgist, I can safely say that anywhere I have played this hymn, people love it.
What a hymn! And what a history ... pastor rinkhard who wrote it certainly went through difficult times yet was able to thank God for all of life’s blessings. Amen
right! I too said the same thing!!! What a Thanksgiving adoration arising out of" dark" times!!
We simply should be thanking God everyday. 24/7.
For sure
God indeed is forever faithful.
A song for when victory has come against all hope, freedom after a nightmare, justice after terror. Now thank we all our God!
Oh how can i listen to this great hymn without an outburst in tears in deep tears of joy, especially after carefully listening to the powerful words of the first stanza
This is so moving and appropriate for Thanksgiving.
Just magnificent..what a great rendition of this great hymn, beautifully sung and played by great musical players.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 22), I played this for Sunday School Assembly. I did so because Thanksgiving is this Thursday.

FYI, Mr Rutter is still very much alive and still composing and arranging :-)

The brass fanfare as the intro is pure genius.

Breathtaking!
Lovely way to start my day, thanks!
God bless you for good songs

Thanks, Craig, for the explanation. For non-LDS readers, LDS theology rejects the principle of the Trinity.
