  • Heilung is amplified history from early medieval northern Europe and should not be mistaken for a modern political or religious statement of any kind.
Remember that we all are brothers
All people, beasts, tree and stone and wind
We all descend from the one great being
    That was always there
Before people lived and named it
    Before the first seed sprouted

However, remember that you all are visitors on our page, so keep your discussions respectful to each other. We can and will not tolerate hateful modern political or religious shouting here. Anyone doing so, has clearly not understod what Heilung is about, and will therefore without warning be kicked out. Stay cool. Heilung

I was shown this video - to my shocked and awed surprise by my good friend's 4-year old son (half South African, dreads and all), being a click-happy tech-savvy prodigy he had gauged the mesmeric quality and neural hum of all ancestral - not the immediately hijacked monochrome interpretation, pseudo-pagans spiritual urbanites all.
Thank you for the experience and for you valiant, sadly neccessary defense of YOUR OWN WORK.

i dont understand why everyone is projecting their own insecurities onto this work of art, its not saying we are all the same, its saying we are all interconnected and cut from the same fabric, if you are a heathen like me you are a pantheist, you beleive all of nature is alive and we are all one divinity, who said divinity is just feel good shit? the narrative that plays out here is as much a part of divinity as anything else, how can there be order without disorder, good without bad? the divine reality that we are all a part of is older than even the gods, nothing expressed in the video is out of sync with the old ways and it certainly isnt marxism, have you read the lyrics? its about defending your people, wanting to be left in peace but not being afraid to fight.

Hollywood and the church have really scrambled up people's perceptions about the world and what resides within it. Sounds like your friend has been fed the same propaganda from the middle-ages.
A band called 'Heilung' meaning 'Healing' that advocates peace, to live & let live.. if this concept is weird, and clearly evil then your friend is in serious need of getting their head checked at the very least.
It's that same narrow minded understanding & hard-line ideology that has gotten so many generation's murdered or outright liquidated from memory. Just like in the song, the attacking force refuses to live & let live.

The non-English lyrics are taken from the runes of Panel 2 of the Eggja Stone, a gravestone from AD 650-750 in Norway. It likely describes burial rites/sacrifice and passage to the afterlife, but Heilung has interpreted it for a story.

We are all one, coming from the same place....
We whites got pretty lucky with the best spawn location in the world for advancing tech-wise....Horses and other draft animals, rich in pure iron, and an extremely diverse ecosystem that perpetuated so many different cultures to grow in close proximity. All whilst also being generally pretty safe environmentally, compared to other parts of world (less disasters, less predatory animals that are huge and can easily kill a man, less extreme weather that acctualy affects brain usage [heat stroke]. Humans can brave cold and lose a limb over it, but extreme heat cooks your brain...).
Not to mention being in such a location that was hard to reach or mysterious to Asia/Africa. A boon though, because it inspired them to explore the unknown, or invade. Mongols brought us better horses, philosophies, and war tactics. Africans/central Asians brought us better forging techniques, and craftsmanship principals like mathematics, and engineering.
We just used everything the world gave us to the greatest of our ability like any other human culture would strive to do.
-Native Americans were still tribal because they didn't have horses, or much forging/tech knowledge. No true system of mathematics. They were too separated from everyone else to benefit from our togetherness, not really their fault at all. (same goes for any far separated native group. Look at pupa new ginie, or the amazon.
-Mongols had little resources in terms of their geology, and had to take what they could, or trade with other cultures. Using their mass supply of horses to get around and discover new things.
-Central Asians and North Africans live in deserts/savannahs and life can be scarce, and so concentrated on survival and daily needs.
South Africans suffer from the no horses problem too, and while they did have draft animals (elephants, bison, etc) they had a lot more environmental hazards to deal with compared to anywhere in Europe. (Lions, cheetahs, hyena's, etc). They had wayyyy more environmental extremes to deal with than most Europeans on average.
I make all these points to highlight how lucky we are a ethnicity among the people. That it is our duty to help elevate the other peoples to enjoy the luxuries of safety and technology that have been shared with us through the generations.
The reality is, no matter how much we fight, how much we say we hate each other, we all have a part of one another in us. We are all one people with common goals. (unless your a socio or psychopath....)

K-aW-tEk God your point pissed me off. You have the exact mentality of the conquistadors: "we have the good culture, everything else is savagery." Native Americans were happy before French people got there. They had their own culture and respected nature, something we're clearly lacking today. They were all about balance and family and respect. What is it about now again? Individuality, destruction and disrespectful behaviour. Maybe we should've adopted their culture instead? Without all that pollution and complications to life that are maths and metallurgy. Get out of your simple world and face reality.

What I like about this song, is that it does not celebrate war and combat, unfortunately like too many artists in this corner of music do, stuck in the "viking" blood-and-thunder mindset.
It begrudges it. It hates it. It makes peace with the fact that conflict, and regrettably, combat is a part of human nature and evolution, but these people did not want this. These people did not enjoy this. They lost their own, they were raped, tortured and killed, and were pushed to the point of exterminating their enemy. But there was no celebration, only quiet afterwards. Quiet for healing and mourning. Because no loss of life should be celebrated, only regarded as necessary.

    Times of anger
    Times of lie
    Times of suffering
    Times change
    World is change
The times of blood and war, sword and axe
What am I supposed to do
If I want to talk about peace and understanding
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace
But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking
So my tongue shall become iron
And my words the mighty roar of war
Revealing my divine anger's arrow shall strike
All action for the good of all
I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun
    The sword is soft
In the fire of the furnace
    It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
    They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain
    Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
    The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
And bliss in my heartCoexistence, Conflict, combat
    Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you
I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise
    To melt away all moons....

As a historian, I am most seriously impressed how much this composition and presentation combines. A commentary of the conditions of the early human experience. The story is as old as time and universal even until this moment. A group of people tribe together to survive the rigors and enjoy the experience of life, only to be targeted by other human beings with a different agenda. There is conflict, murder, pillage, woe, and assumption of victory. This is followed by vengeance and slaughter. We , humanity, are a disappointing lot. We are born with all the potential to truly be natural and beneficial. We know the ideal, but all of those we encounter affect what we become.

    • @oni2538
      @oni2538 5 років тому +55

Conflict, murder, pillage, woe, and assumption of victory, and the effects thereafter of vengeance and slaughter, are natural. One may only be disappointed because one wishes that man be what he is not. Expectations must be curbed- we can only hope to improve the lot of mankind by first recognizing what he is intrinsically, and then working upon that foundation. One cannot make an individual of an ant; one cannot make a cosmopolitan of tribal hominoids. One can try, and indeed, many have tried- and all we have to tangibly show for it are inflamed and exaggerated tribal sentiments, horrible tragedies, and countless innocents lost to a conflict they never knew they were a part of. Thus the great cycle of time turns, round and round- viewed from outside as a wheel- viewed from within as a mill grinding slowly, yet grinding exceeding small; patiently and thoroughly, with exactness grinding all.

Also notice how when the villager takes the mushroom and becomes a shaman, the colours are inverted along with the power dynamic

"Happy Solstice" to my yellow-haired brother's and sister's of the North, from the I'llmawi Nation, as this Native American Indian blesses you and all life. Before there was organized religion, there was the everlasting Sun and Moon, which meant everything to our great civilization's. Before we uttered our first words, there was the Drum and Heartbeat, pumping though our veins and it became the measure of our fleeting days. Before buildings rose up to touched the sky, there were the Great Mountain's and deep Valley's, cycling everything we needed ― Everything only went wrong, when someone said "More", "Mine" and "Me" instead of saying "Us"'.... !!!
I see great nation's make promises to the Earth, every few years, but they always say "Tomorrow" or "Later" ― We need not forget, that today in South America, they still pours gasoline on the Rain Forest and burn away 120 acres per minute. Why, because of gold.... !!!
I need not sermonize to all ― Eventually, the Earth will always find a way to heal Herself, even if, it means to decimate humanity. She's already begun with the Covid-19 viruses, a volcanic explosion, Russia's determination to wipeout another nation, and so much, much more to come.
If your here listening to Heilung's music, then you are only half-the-way across the bridge between harmony and devastation. As the Sun rises here across my ancestral lands, I share my heart-felt prayers' with anyone who feels Her warmth. Please, continue to talk to your government, to stop the destruction everywhere.
    With All My Blessings ―
    Raven Shadow

I think I understand the song better now, thanks to the video. I thought english part that starts with "What am I supposed to do…", at first I thought that this part was the "Kriegsgaldr", the war magic, or incantation intoned before the inevitable battle, because as much as peace is desired, the attackers only know the language of the sword. I thought it was the battle magic woven by the defenders to aid them.(maybe it is, as well). Now I see how the proto-norse lyrics, which are the words found on the eggja stone (the eggja stone is a tomb stone with proto-norse inscription, found in Norway) (the ones that tell of a shipwreck in a far off land) are describing the effects of the retaliatory war magic cast at the fleeing attackers. The "villager" at 6:45 is grieving for his slain love, so he eats the sacred mushrooms and enters into a shamanic trance. There he is transformed from ordinary mortal and assumes a more primal divine spirit shape (with the antlers, beating on the shamanic drum). The proto-norse words say "Vil (the seagod, or just divine will) threw a death wave over the boat, the mast snapped, the oars were useless, the wave, like a godly-fish from Firnøy’s streams, out of river-fear swimming,
as fowl, out of f(?) crowing(from our crowing/incanting (the crow shaped branch calling out a malediction). The few survivors who make it to shore, are now on the receiving end of violence from the "little snails", (which btw, show up a lot in the margins of illuminated medieval manuscripts) which they so carelessly and effortlessly crushed under foot earlier.
And so, through "kriesgaldr", or war magic, vengeance is brought upon the departing invaders. Not too unlikely use of magic, since historicaly it was not uncommon for magic workers to curse an enemy's ships. (one of the witches from MacBeth is another famous literary reference to this kind of magic.)
The eegja stone has quite a few different interpretations. I love this artistic interpretation from Heilung. Bravo.

I love the way they chose to depict what actually happens in war, it's a very creative way to get around the demonetization of the video, because it uses historical rock carvings of real events in Scandinavian history, which for what it is, cannot be Demonitized, as it is historical art that has been animated to tell a story. I love it!

    STORY INSPIRED BY KRIGSGALDR
[listen to the song whilst reading this]
    I was just a lad.
I had been in the forest playing, sitting on a branch in a tree, when suddenly a bird swooped down at me, with a wolf trailing it. Startled, I fell down from the branch and hit the ground with a thud. Before I had the chance to process that, a buck jumped over me.The horrified screeching of animals passed by, ignoring me in their flight, yet I had no idea what they were so afraid of.
Then, on the wind, the acrid scent of fire. I stood up, watching a grey gloom rising above the treetops and fading into the sky.
The horns of war blared, echoing through the forest. My blood ran cold. I rushed back to the village as fast as I could - only to see the burning shambles of what I once called my home. Ships were docked on the seaside, heavily armed men slaughtering my cohort. Wherever they burned, death and destruction followed. They raped, pillaged, plundered my people. Tortured and then killed them. My chieftain had been tied to a tree and his throat had been slit.
All for what? Why? What did we do to them to engender this ire of theirs?
I see them, my injured father mourning my mother who had been raped and killed right in front of him. I see the bodies of my friends litter the ground. I see the destruction they had caused to my village. My people. We were a peaceful people; fishermen and farmers - we had no fight with these people. They were of the same blood as we were - one and the same. We were brothers.
    We *were* a peaceful people.
    We *were* brothers.
They wished to destroy us, conquer us; break us.
    They thought wrong.
I killed a man when I was just a lad, a pitchfork jammed right into his chest. His eyes rolled back in his head.
That was my first taste of blood.
    Of war.
    Of death.
I will ensure my people will survive. I will help my people rise far beyond and above the apes we once called our beloved brothers, who slaughtered us for no reason. But now we will give them a reason.
We too will learn to speak our beloved brother enemy’s language - the language of the sword.
We will become the giants - the jotunn they fear, to protect ourselves. We will call forth the power of our dead comrades, and strike them down with the divine arrows of war. We will rise from the ashes reborn anew, and the ground shall quake and quiver with the strength of our might.
Our new age has just begun.
Raise your shields, my brothers, and may we pave our way to victory.

Heilung are able to create an amazing pastiche of the mindset of human beings from a time long past, a time when the world was a far more brutal and fearful place. There's a tremendous feeling of ancientness to the music, and it allows me to understand on an emotional level the truth that the people who lived in the ancient past were as human as you or I. I'm glad to live in a relatively peaceful time and place, but the positive experience I take away from the music here is that even when the world was dark and violent there was still meaning, beauty and healing to be found. I find that a comforting thought.
