Wow.. Vintage WH-1 is way more lo-fi sounds that i love. Great review!
From what I'm gathering, the classic mode on the WH5 is a bit less "glitchy" than the original in the classic mode. Pretty close, but not quite there.
But the fact they've had varying levels of wear and tear over about 30 years, and in the context of a recording or live setting with the drums, bass and singer in the mix, you can't possibly tell the difference, so it doesn't seem worth paying 4-5 times the price tag of the WH5 for that magic mojo. Like a TC2290, a Vox AC30 from 1964, a vintage Tubescreamer, or guitars with Brazilian Rosewood, it's really just a load of hype that, unless you collect vintage gear, doesn't really justify spending half your wages for what could functionally be on its last legs.
Obviously some people might have a different opinion and there may very well be a difference in sound that you can hear, and it's up to you what you spend your money on, but I'd personally go for the WH5 because it's close enough for me, reliable and saves me a shitload of money. Plus the average audience member isn't going to give a toss what gear you use as long as you keep them entertained.
this comparison is not reliable the used vh1 is faulty if you want to make a comparison a test you have to do serious things right you can't take a broken pedal and compare it with another doesn't work like this
I needed this so bad! Underrated channel, but I can guarantee that it will grow if you keep doing what you're doing (:
What’s really cool to me that I don’t always see other people talk about with the WH-1 is how the detune works compared to the newer models; the exp still shifts the pitch like the other settings, but the newer models just have the exp as a mix control. Shame cause parts of Maria by Rage put that to good use
Thank you soo much for this video ! It’s all I’ve ever wanted to compare !

Really excellent comparison, this. Great work!
thanks Gary

Both are cool. I see the v5 being more useful but the v1 is more reliable
Thank you for doing God's work
Hey I have a question for you : have you ever tried a whammy 4 ? I wonder how the whammy 5 in classic mode compares to the whammy 4. I like the glitchiness of the whammy 4 as I have heard it on Delicate Steve albums and thats what he uses but it can be hard to find where I am at but the whammy 5 is easy to buy online so wondering if the classic mode has that same glitchiness the whammy 4 has which seems to be a really nice amount ? thanks PS: you should check out Delicate Steve s album "Positive Force" he has it on a couple of tracks especially Wally Wilder
IMO 5 classic mode is very similar to the whammy 4!
Me luvs the wahmmy😎👌💕
Can you run the whammy dt from a power supply or does it have to be plugged in?
Whammy DT requires a power supply
Great video! I would love to have a wh-1 some day but there's little reason to justify it for the price it's at. I usually use my 5 with an old hammered dulcimer preset from one of my old emu samplers. Throw that into a reverb with 0% dry 100% wet and you get same really cool acoustic warble textures. Also, sweet evil dead 2 a b switch.

Why aren't they making them like the WH1 anymore?
It's possible that IVL Technologies owned / owns the IP for the chips / code for the original WH-1, and for whatever reason, were not able to continue the business arrangement they had shared with Digitech.
Digitech may have then had to come up with their own substitute algorithm / logic for future Whammy iterations.
OP is correct. IVL is a Canadian company that developed and owns the sampling and pitch shifting technology. I recall reading something that IVL was not prepared to outright sell it to digitech as they remarketed the technology for recording and vocal equipment AND it was the very heart and soul of the engineer that made it work. tough to sell that off vs licensing it.
i personally struggle to understand why digitech did not keep that rock-solid smaller footprint housing as it’s about an inch narrower and an inch shorter and just looks so much better than the newer versions.
maybe in version5 IVL negotiated reasonable licensing fees to permit digitech to reuse the software or they sampled/modelled (a la line6 and others) the classic mode. modelling tech is so advanced i’m guessing they modelled it.
if you own the original though ykyk.
You selling that wh1 anytime soon?
sorry it has already been sold
Whats the pedal with the picture of the guy with the crazy look in his face?
Looks to be used as a A - B channel switch
Yes it's a BYOC a/b switcher I made
Is that Bruce Campbell?
Yes
@@PedalScience i thought he was bear grylls🤣
Do you need a big foot for the whammy 5?
you need small feet for the original
@@PedalScience im a size 7.5, would that be good for the whammy 5
@@davidfanshteyn4771 yes definitely
@@PedalScience mmmm feet
what's your signal chain?
telecaster > tu-2, freeze, ditto x2 > A/B switcher with whammys > amp (can't remember which amp, Bugera V22 or Vox AC30S1) > SM57 / Rode NTR > RME Fireface UCX
This is old-school
Great way to compare I owned the 4 n upgraded to 5 idk if it's just me but whammy 5 is better before instead in effects loop like I had the 4 in.....plus the 5 is alot cleaner n doesn't have that fake artificial decay the notes are crisp

Crazy… there’s just simply nothing that compares to that first generation…

Sorry but if you want to do a comparative test you can't use a defective pedal and this vh1 has at least more than two defects so this test is not reliable It is misleading unfortunately and it would have been interesting to hear a comparison but not with a defective pedal
Not sure what you mean I'm afraid
