This is the F6F-3 Hellcat, the first version which saw initial combat service over Marcus Island in September 1943. The F6F-3 was pure fighter. It had no provisions for bombs or rockets. In its roles as air superiority fighter, escort fighter, and interceptor, it performed with excellence. The Hellcat outmatched the Japanese Imperial Navy A6M Zero-sen Reisen. The Zero could still outmaneuver the Hellcat up to 9,000 feet after which this advantage began decreasing.
The U.S. Navy later came out with the versatile F6F-5 Hellcat fighter bomber version which could carry two, 500-lbs bombs and four rockets under each wing. One wonders why the U.S. Navy did not produce the F6F-5 from the very beginning as its versatility as a Jack-of-all-trades would have given the Navy a tremendous advantage. In fact the introduction of the Hellcat and Corsair fighter bomber versions obsoleted the purpose-built dive bomber.
In late 1944, Grumman produced a prototype, the F6F-6. An improved, more powerful engine and a four-blade propeller gave the F6F-6 a top speed of 416 mph, something Hellcat pilots would have greatly appreciated. But the F6F-6 was superfluous. Grumman's superlative F8F-1 Bearcat was about to enter mass production.
The F8F-1 Bearcat utilized the same, 2,100-horsepower, 18-cylinder, double-row Pratt & Whitney engine as the F6F-5 but it was a compact, smaller design that was 2,000-lbs lighter than the Hellcat. As a result, the Bearcat flew like a nimble cheetah or jaguar in the air. Designed to carry bombs and two rockets under each wing from the beginning, the Bearcat was to be an air superiority fighter and interceptor while possessing the abilities as fighter-bomber and ground support.
The Bearcat likely would have served alongside the F6F-5 Hellcat, rather than outright replacing it, although had the Pacific War lasted longer, Hellcat fighter pilots may have begun transferring to the Bearcat.
But we go back to the original F6F-3 that changed everything and turned the tables on the Japanese Imperial Navy Zero-sen fighter pilots. Experienced, seasoned fighter pilots like Saburo Sakai knew how to employ the Zero's superior maneuverability defensively against the Hellcat and still come out winners, but such men were becoming fewer and far between. The replacement young Japanese pilots of very late 1943 to early 45 were hurriedly trained and not adequately, their total training flying time measure in 150 hours often even less by late 1944. The results were predictable. The American Hellcats began shooting these inexperienced and ill-trained Japanese tyros out of the air in droves. The Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 marked the end of the Imperial Japanese Carrier Air Army. The demise of the Imperial Japanese Combined Fleet followed shortly after in December 1944 at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.

I remember Toys R Us used to sell BBI EF and Ultimate Soldier planes in the 2000s. Used to go in there all the time with my dad to spend my allowance. Bought me a Ultimate Soldier JU 87 Stuka with winter paint scheme. I did find a diecast of the U.S.S. Arizona in 2001 in one. That was when Toys R Us and Target had a SHITLOAD of Pearl Harbor stuff (GI Joe, Ultimate Soldier, Matchbox diecast planes, etc) to help advertise for Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor" film that year (Toys R Us had a big "in theaters Memorial Day weekend" poster set up as well).

Again BBI did an outstanding job on it all the way around. The F6F is my favorite fighter plane in the Pacific while the Mustang is my favorite in the European theater of WW 2.

I didn't see the appeal for the WWII stuff at the time. BBi and 21st went out... who bought all of the molds, or are they wasting away in some warehouse in Hong Kong or China??? Definitely one of the weakest planes in the entire 1:18 line. Windshield/ canopy is too big and the wings droop pretty badly. Really disappointed with this one. I had the same reaction to the 21st Century P-40.

    • @1teamski

@@MilitaryVehicleReviews I was collecting these from day one and at one time had just about every 1:18 made in all paint schemes. I used to drag my wife to every Walmart (poor thing). I was even a guest of 21st Century Toys at the NY Toy Fair one year. I am thrilled I got to experience these in their heyday. For $40, they were an absolute steal. Good luck getting them today at a decent price. Great video by the way.
