As the story is told, “Lovin’ You” was originally written as a lullaby for her then two-year-old daughter, Maya. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and, in April, she underwent a radical mastectomy. At the time of diagnosis, cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis but did not disclose she was terminally ill. Despite her prognosis she continued recording and touring. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society’s Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. This song is really timeless. It feels like it was just released yesterday. Her crystal clear voice, and her whistle tone (which is perfect), are all making it so beautiful!
I had the honor & pleasure of seeing Ms. Riperton with George Benson in concert back in 1974(?) at the Mississippi River Festival on the campus of Southern Illinois University (SIU). 5th row! Me and a friend snuck backstage and got to meet GB. What a kind guy to stop and shake hands with two young kids--both of us guitarists who admired his beautiful playing, singing and performing. Honestly ... at the time I didn't know too much about MR ... but I sure did post-concert! At the end of the show they joined each other on stage for several songs. It was the stuff goosebumps are made of. Great memories.
it makes me feel even sadder that Minnie died in her husband's arms, how pure is the love? Also, just found out her daughter is Maya Rudoplh, I'm shook.

Her range is absolutely breathtaking. I have never heard anyone hit the high notes like she could. If you ever wondered what an angel sounds like, now you know.
Back in the day, I remember playing this song over and over. I knew all the words and would close my eyes and be lost in the beauty of this song. She sure is sorely missed.
@@starbeauty672 I disagree. I am a HUGE fan of Minnie but just because someone is one of the first to do something and is widely known for it doesn't mean they were the absolute best. Minnie has never sang a whole verse and chorus of a song just using her register with the range, clearness, uniqueness, and emotion that Chante did. She probably could have but we'll never know.
I just found out she is Maya Rudolph's mom. I love this song and listening to it almost caused me to transcend to another time. I have heard this song a million times but it sounds so beautiful today. I think because I read the bio of Minnie Riperton and it made the song that much more special. RIP Minnie. What a beautiful voice and wonderful talent. Thank you for giving us Maya Rudolph. She is one of my favorites comedians.
Beautiful gift for her daughter Maya. This gift keeps on giving for her baby girl. I'm starting to see you more and more people are finally realizing what this song is about.
I don't think the song was for her daughter as some have said. I think it was for her husband and she added "Maya" at the end as the beautiful manifestation of the lovemaking and love that she and her husband shared together.
@@derrickhobbs6463 you need to watch the documentary on the song Maya said her mom wrote the song for both her and her brother In another documentary The husband said, he was just playing his guitar and minnie was breastfeeding maya and minnie sang that song and it made maya fall alseep so they added it into the song
No, at least originally, it was a love song to a partner. Because, “making love with you is all I want to do,“ and “every time that we - oooh! - I‘m more in love with you.” I recognized that much when I used to listen to this song on the radio during its original airplay.
My 7 year old daughter loooooves this song! She keeps trying to make the high notes 😂🤭 (too cute) She laughed in amazement at how Minnie put her own spin on it in this version... she had listened to and replayed the original audio like 5 times before she came to this live version. DeAndre Black if even I tear up, I know she does. I didn’t even know that she was Minnie’s daughter till recently. And this song is so beautiful, Minnie was really so so in love. However, this is not up for debate because we are talking about actual VOICE

I thought the same thing today! Shooketh to the core!
Music like this isn’t even in the radar of today’s singers or artists. This is about pure soul. It’s about the music not your ego, fame or fortune.

Mariah Carey in her prime is close but no minnie.
Look for Chante Moore singing in whistle register.
@@nesharenee7771still no match for Minnie
@@starbeauty672 I disagree. I am a HUGE fan of Minnie but just because someone is one of the first to do something and is widely known for it doesn't mean they were the absolute best. Minnie has never sang a whole verse and chorus of a song just using her register with the range, clearness, uniqueness, and emotion that Chante did. She probably could have but we'll never know.

Gorgeous, just gorgeous. Wow! No words to describe her.

She was famous for being able to almost perfectly imitate musical instruments, so your observation is quite apt.
No one, no one today can sing this song the way Minnie sang it. Mind boggling high notes! but she sang it so easily and naturally!
Beautiful gift for her daughter Maya. This gift keeps on giving for her baby girl. I'm starting to see you more and more people are finally realizing what this song is about.
Yeah, everyone who covers it just tries to hit the notes and doesn't sing it with emotion. Which makes it 2x the accomplishment.
Mariah Carey comes very close though. 😊
Chechi from the voice just came pretty close!!!! Very rare.
The girl on the voice killed this song by Minnie

I don't think the song was for her daughter as some have said. I think it was for her husband and she added "Maya" at the end as the beautiful manifestation of the lovemaking and love that she and her husband shared together.

The husband said, he was just playing his guitar and minnie was breastfeeding maya and minnie sang that song and it made maya fall alseep so they added it into the song
No, at least originally, it was a love song to a partner. Because, “making love with you is all I want to do,“ and “every time that we - oooh! - I‘m more in love with you.” I recognized that much when I used to listen to this song on the radio during its original airplay.

Dream on....She didn't need to take off her clothes and show her fake boobs. It's simple: Just her and the microphone. That being said: Mariah can't really do whistle anymore and in recent memory, the one that can do it well and continues to do it is Chante Moore. However, this is not up for debate because we are talking about actual VOICE
Mariah is not as smooth as Minnie. Minnie is beyond words and I am a fan of both of them

TODAY IN MUSIC
April 5, 1975 - 45 Years Ago Today: Minnie Riperton went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with her single, "Lovin' You." This was her first of two Hot 100 singles and only one to chart inside the Top 40 on the Hot 100 chart despite a handful of hits on the Billboard R&B Chart. The single was co-written by Riperton and her husband, Richard Rudolph. Unfortunately, Riperton's life was cut short due to breast cancer and she died on July 12, 1979, at the age of 31. She is best remembered today for her ability to sing in the whistle register, in which she had rare vocal range which spanned five octaves. Mariah Carey credits Riperton as an influence on her vocal delivery. Riperton and Rudolph's daughter is actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph. [04/05/2020]
