This interview aired in late June 1979 but was filmed in early May of 1979. By the time it was screened however Minnie Riperton was already confined to bed in the final stages of her battle with cancer. If you note during her chat with Mike Douglas, her left arm is immobile and she keeps it stationary due to the effects of her illness.
To smile, laugh, make conversation and sing perfectly knowing all the while your body is losing it's fight to a deadly disease and being in great pain.
    RIP.....

I love Minnie Riperton. She may not have been in a lot of pain. She may have had access to adequate amounts of opioid pain relievers which are very effective and very safe and can usually control the pain without knocking you out. Unfortunately politics and economic warfare and propaganda that creates a climate of fear around opioids, and makes physicians fearful about prescribing them, these days people often do not get adequate pain relief.

    • @thegoose2724
      @thegoose2724 Рік тому +1

      @@soilmanted
It's not that physicians are afraid to prescribe them. It's the government, red-tape and insurance companies that have placed to many restrictions on them being dispensed. Right now you must have basically a terminal disease or end-stage illness before they even consider writing a prescription. I understand and get the reason for the hesitance being the overwhelming misuse of the drugs themselves. However when a person is sick or ill resulting in servere pain they shouldn't have to be in the throws of dying or death to receive opioid drugs. In my honest opinion it is a miscarriage of fiduciary responsibility on behalf of the government and the physician to play Russian roulette with a patients illness. Especially because of the potential for misuse by a select few, which does not determine another individuals level of illness!!!!

Mike Douglas was such a classy guy.
He didn't try to embarrass his guests, just genuinely interested in learning about them for his audience.
And Minnie does this interview, charming everyone, even though she had only months to live, and she knew it at the time.
Two wonderful people no longer with us.
    RIP, Mike and Minnie.

It's crazy, she died only 6 months after this being aired...
I'm 18, and I love all her music. Minnie Riperton, Angela Bofill, Phyllis Hyman... all of them. Ironically, all meeting tragic ends in their careers.
Too bad, people can't sing anywhere near as beautifully as the people of this time, before my generation. Damn, I can barely stand the majority of my generations music

Air Date: 06/15/79 date of death July 12, 1979 ( 27days after being aired ) I read an old article recently where it said that she thought she had about another year left ... so sad. It was all about promoting the Minnie album in the wake of her dying. It's amazing she stayed so sunny here though she was really ill.

i know this is a nearly ten year old comment but im the same age you were when you made this comment. i hate when people say this because they don't venture out of mainstream music. theres plenty of singers with beautiful voices who just dont get the recognition they deserve, and having that mindset is just ignorant.

Minnie was beautiful inside and out. And what an amazing voice. She only really had one hit single here in the UK and I have loved discovering her music. It is both sad and uplifting at the same time. It is awful to think that if she was still with us this year she would still have only been 70 years old. We don't get to keep the true angels down here on Earth or very long. Rest In Peace, Minnie.

Truly incredible when you have such a brave way of appearing publicly and yet knowing there is absolutely no hope for you. I never got to know this lovely woman, but yet I feel close to her. I don't know why. Maybe because I lost both my parents in 2018 and they passed away with pride and bravery, too. I know how it feels to loose somebody very close to you. So yes, R.I.P. dear Minnie! You won't be forgotten.

Man, when I listen to this briliant woman, she brings a huge smile to my face, and at the same time I feel so sad for the fact that she had such a brief life. She passed away in the year I was born. I know it's crazy, but I gotta say, it's too demanding sometimes. Wish you could come from the clouds and sing to us, right at this time...
    Rest in peace, Minnie.
