#16 - How To Decode 1967 Ford VINs

- Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” UA-cam channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and before we begin, I want to remind you when you’re done watching this video to please check out some of my other videos numbers 1 through 15 on my channel - thank you! Today in video #16 we’re going to learn how to fully and properly decode the Vehicle Identification Number (or VIN) for all 1967 Ford full-size cars, namely the Custom, Custom 500, Galaxie 500, XL, LTD, Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan, and Country Squire series. We’ll see where the VINs are located on the car, we’ll review the five elements that make up the VIN structure and how to decode each of them, and finally we’ll see an example of a VIN decode. Let’s get started!

Although this content is very informative, I also find it to be nostalgic as well. Having spent a considerable amount of my childhood riding in the dual facing rear seats of a '67 Country Sedan wagon and then, in the early '90s being lucky enough to own a '67 XL two door hardtop for several years. Now in my twilight years, Ive begun to look for either a wagon or Galaxy 2 door hardtop, spurred on by a couple of your recent videos.
That ol' Custom 500 must've been something to see (& drive) back in the day with that 427 under the hood.
I fondly remember the smooth power delivery and quiet ride of my XL despite the installation of Hooker Super Comp headers to address a couple of maniflod leaks. That and a valve job were all she needed to get that 390 humming again.
Had 69000 on the clock when i got her (probably 169000 judging by pedal wear) but just a joy to drive.
More '67s please...
@nealsidor1323, I'm glad that you enjoyed this video for more than one reason. There will be more 1967 Ford full-size cars on the channel, not to worry! I am the founder and manager of the 1967 Ford Full-Size Registry, after all.

I wrote to Ford about the ViN of my previously mentioned '67 T-Bird. They were kind enough to write back (a real letter) with a detailed break-down of the coded info.
@shelbynamels973, FoMoCo used to offer those "History 999 Letters" through the Customer Relations Center, but I was under the impression that this is no longer the case. Can someone please clarify?

@@adrianclements8916 Quite possible. I don't remember exactly when I wrote to Ford, but it's been a while. I'm talking a decade or longer.

I also love trucks of any kind and would like to see some Ford & Mercury trucks.

It has taken me more than 30 years to curate my FoMoCo reference library and learn what I know; I'm sorry to say that I don't have enough time left in my life to start over with a completely different manufacturer. That role is going to have to be filled by somebody else!

the 7 b in the serial number is Code that it was made in Canada, if the Code was 7F it would mean the car was built in Dearborn.

Thanks very informative. I didn't realize that there was an early and a late DP for 67. Are you only interested in 67 or other years of Ford products? In the 80's and 90's I cataloged about 3000 Ford products from 1951 tp 1970. I still have the info.
@theprinceofsnj, thank you for the kind words about the video - I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am interested in all FoMoCo passenger car and light trucks from the early 1950s through about 1980. If you are offering to share your info on 3000 (!!) Ford products with me, that would be INCREDIBLE!! Thank you for your generosity. If I misread, I apologise. Either way, I'm a numbers guy at heart. Properly and fully decoding VINs and production data is what I do!

I always wonder why Ford put the VIN tag on the door. I never looked at the writing. You know earlier in the fifties they put it on the glove box. On the lid of all things. I'm speaking more pickup trucks and I am cars that's why I'm more familiar with. My question for you is on the earlier truck say about 53 that body style. Is the same rule that the cow tag or some other tag supersedes the tag on the glove box door? Similar to the difference between the two tags one of them being the door in your example. Thank you.
@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525, I don't have any 1953 Ford pickup truck literature in my library, but according to a quick check I just did of websites and the Ford Truck Enthusiasts online community, the legal VIN on a 1953 Ford pickup truck was stamped into either a) the passenger frame rail above the front axle or b) the radiator frame support near the passenger frame rail. The data plate was affixed to the glove box lid, and the VIN on that should match the frame VIN. I hope this helps!

@jameshuffman835, "7K49Z" is a 1967 Ford Fairlane 500/XL Ranchero, (1 of only 1,881 built) from the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri with a 390-4V 315 hp V-8 engine. Thanks for watching, and Happy Holidays, James!
