I Quit My Job. Now What?

  • A while back, I listened to a podcast from Aust over at ‪@Homesteadyshow‬ about getting out of the rat race. It stuck with me for a long time. I'd catch myself at my desk daydreaming about a time when I could leave my job and homestead full time.
    This is not that time...
But, I recently made some moves to better my daily life, and part of that involved leavin my high stress / low quality of life sales job for a position that affords me a much better work-life balance. Let's talk about it.

At 18 I picked my dad up at work to go to the hospital. He knew it was bad, he said, I wish we would have spent more time together. He died that night. I went on to a great paying career in fortune 400 companies. After 20 years I felt empty, I left and started doing my own things. The last 20 years were SO much better even being totally broke at times. You'll have many ways to make money, but only ONE family. Well done young man.

What an awesome video! I am just about to turn 30 and I am a professional counselor who’s just recently gotten into outdoors/ farming now that I’m done with college. I’m so thankful for what you do, it’s simply inspiring. Thank you from a beginning homesteader therapist :)

So happy for you! In 2017 we had a 3 yr old and I was working in a small telecom call center and was basically on call 24/7. My boss always told us that we were okay to leave to take care of family and that family came first. Eventually I made up my mind that it was not the type of life I wanted to live and when I told him I was quitting because family came first, he understood 1000%. He even told me that his wife said that she wishes that he would do the same. No amount of money can take place of your person and presence. Once again. So happy for you guys!

I should have taken the step you are taking earlier in my live. When I was about 38 I hated my job enormously. I did hang on to it because I just had bought a big farm house, without the farm though, I had two little children and my wife did not earn money.
Hanging on made me really sick and when I finally did quitt I was so unwell that I could not work for 1,5 years.
As you say, we all do not get any younger.
I did find your channel because I intend to buy a BX231. This is on hold until I find a new job.
I live in Bavaria and this little machines are incredible expensive here.

Hindsight is 20/20. At least you are in a place where you can make the best of the life you still have ahead of you. Too many don’t realize what’s important until they are on their death beds.

It's crazy that you posted this video today. My current position requires me to go oncall once a month. I've done it for 10 years but it's starting to take a toll on me. Like you said about having to answer the phone, I have to answer and most of the time leave for several hours. Having 3 kids makes it very hard. There is a position about to open in my company that would allow me not to go oncall but it would also be salary and It would be a pretty significant pay cut. My wife and I have been weighing the pros and cons for a few days.
Thanks for sharing and congratulations on starting a new chapter!!

My wife and I just had this conversation a few weeks ago, are plan ends up with her getting her masters and becoming a therapist and me quitting my job as a hydrogen fuel cell technician and working our 8 acre goat/chicken farm. I love everything about this video Jack! My dad was a salesman too. Growing up I was pressured to go to school. So I went, got debt and worked my ass off for years to pay that off. I decided to quit the rate race what 6 years ago? I will take that one odd job here and there but it's stuff that I enjoy doing. If I ever have to go back to work I will not be looking for that paycheck at the end but rather the quality of life and simple things that make me happy.

Making that kind of leap is can be EXTREMELY rewarding. I left corporate three years ago, after almost a decade in the same job, when I became a teacher. It is an entirely different kind of rat-race, but it has been the best decision I've made professionally. You have to remain true to yourself and like you, I realized that I wasn't doing that. I needed a job where I felt like I was helping people (rather than working for lawyers...) Congratulations on your "lowly" new position.

Thank you for sharing. I'm a teacher (high school math) and just before the world was swamped with Covid, I was having serious burn-out issues and I knew deep in my heart that I couldn't continue teaching much longer. Then the world sort of went insane, and I was teaching remotely (harder - but easier). I also discovered that I have a genetic predisposition to a class of cancers, and so leaving my job became harder than ever. Without a job I would not have health insurance. As a high risk individual it might be difficult and spendy to get my own insurance, and without a job, there'd be no paycheck.
Now that school is ready to start again, I was faced with the fact that, as a high risk individual for Covid, I needed to avoid being around a ton of anti-maskers and hoaxers because Covid could kill me or my family members. It was scary knowing I might have to quit to protect myself. But it has also been a bit of freedom for my soul. If I make it through this year, I'm going to start (now) figuring out how I can make this my last year as a teacher. I'm the only one working, but we can get by somehow someway. Just have to plan to do it.
