Good for you. I've been working as an architect for 23 years in Switzerland now and am on my second burnout. I broke down six days ago and discovered your video. I've already made plans to leave this life for a slower pace next year and do homesteading in Italy. But now everything is uncertain and watching someone taking care of themselves before is to late is actually helping me to proceed my way. thank you, all the best :)

I'm sorry to hear about your burnout. It truly is such a huge deal & I hope you're able to work through it and come out of it in a better place. Plus, homesteading in Italy sounds like a dream! Rooting for you!! :) thank you for your kind comment!

@@calicocowacres thank you for your reply :) I'm really impressed with all you've achieved! I will still go to Italy next year, it will just take a few more turns than expected. And yes, I've been dreaming about this for the past ten years, but was always too afraid... people like you give me hope I can achieve my dreams as well!

Awesome! Are you going to go to one of those abandoned towns in the Italian mountains? I saw a few different videos from those type of places in the past and it looks like absolute paradise. Beautiful old homes to restore... With a whole lot of hard work!!

@@gussampson5029 I haven't decided yet, but lately my eyes have been set on Puglia. I will probably travel down the east coast and see where it takes me. I've saved up some money to take me through the first three to five years. Hopefully I will have established the homestead by then :)

The strain of your job has been evident for a while. As I binge watch your story (I just found your channel a couple months ago), you and Taylor have made such amazing strides on your new homestead with evenings and weekends your only times to devote to your passion. So, good for you. I wish you every success as you move on to what I hope is a better balance in your lives and continued success in building your future together.

Just came across your channel and liked the 6 month summary enough to subscribe to see more content. I couldn’t resist jumping out of viewing sequence to watch this juicy episode! 😂 I’m laughing because I’ll be 73 in a couple of weeks, and can’t begin to tell you how many different careers I’ve had during that time, and how many stupid stressful jobs that paid big bucks, that I simply walked away from. Try doing that with three kids, a stay at home wife/mother, and a mortgage. Yeah, you’d have to be crazy to not be stressed by making a move like that, but I’ve always had something going for me that I still hang my hat on today…faith! I’m not going to get preachy and all religious on you, but I was raised to believe that God has a purpose for each and every one of us, and if we just include him in our "planning," that somehow it always works out (not always how WE think it should work out. Just saying something like "I’m not sure where this is all going, but if there’s something you’d like me to be doing, then open the doors for those opportunities." That’s it! Put it in His hands then work like He doesn’t exist. You’ll be amazed which doors open in the most unusual ways to opportunities you never though be something you would do.
The second thing I’ve always had going for me was faith in myself…and you have many of the same qualities that I’ve been blessed with. You’re exited about life and you immerse your entire being into those things which you love, and believe me when I say that’s the energy that gets noticed by everyone around you…employers included! You’re also not afraid of trying new things. That’s another quality everyone sees, and is not one that everyone is willing to embrace. Change is the only constant, and the better you can adapt to change, the easier challenges in life will be to deal with.
I’ll close by saying to tell Taylor every night that you love him and appreciate him. Men are very simple, and we will stay true to our wives with a simple acknowledgement of appreciation…and a good meal, once in awhile!😂😂 I know, because we just celebrated 51 years of ups and downs, and joys and sorrows…but we always had each other.
When you lay your head down to sleep, always thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed upon you and Taylor. That really all He wants to hear.
    Peace!

I don't even think I knew that I had to get my master's to make any sort of income until my junior or senior year of undergrad. My school was great at teaching the technical side of things, but horrible at preparing for the actual workplace. Probably because there weren't any firms or internship opportunities within an hour of it. But you're so right, it makes me so upset to think about! I love design so much, but I honestly could not recommend it as a profession with the amount of stress it has caused me.

You really have a gift for making videos! I hate to see all of these young people go to college right out of high school and spend a huge amount of money on something that may not even give them a return. The grown ups are to blame for that. What I heard said in years past, "You need to go to college". It was like if you want to be successful, you need a college degree. Live and learn. As the saying goes, by an author I can't think of his name, "Own your past, change your future". Good luck. I think your social media will work for you+

Hello, I found you from the Holler's videos. Been watching them forever and I'm always looking for more homesteading channels and love watching and know I'm helping someone's dream just as simple as watching. Point I've been sub to you for awhile now and just found this video. I enjoy watching you cause yall are still working and building this dream. Like my fiance and I. I work remote too. I thought it mean more time for my family and goals. Rude awaken not really like that. At first it wasn't bad a few over 8 hours day here or a week working 50 there. No big thing. Shortly after being there a year I got a lead position. Excited for more cash to help get more stable and of course I made sure to ask will my hours be the same and being told yes. It changed quickly to can you stay till 5pm for a meeting each week and try to be there as much as possible. To adding more meetings around that one after my hours. To adding another day late weekly meetings and you have to be there. No try to make it. But still expected to come in early to get things done. I'm working like 50 hours a week now. Doing our homestead, house project (remodeling a kitchen now) trying to be a good parent, see family when we can, trying to have time just to have fun and not regret it the next day cause we didn't work on a project. Cause there just isn't enough time in the day. Mental health is a mess for me. I feel like im in got to go mood every second if everyday. I've debated on looking for another job. Just scared I won't find a around what I make now and remote. Cause remote means I can work if my son is home sick or snow day. So no anger boss and still making money. I feel it's coming to that. Told myself to hold out till next year after holidays and remodel. Save and see where I am. Cause like you said I don't want to quit the homestead that's been my dream and it's happening. Just the job is taking it toll on me. Not just hours. Sad wish I could find a job I work my 40 get paid and that's all. Happy to work for my money but when you work hard places just want more of you it seems. Sorry to comment so much. Just related so hard-core for me currently. So happy for you and enjoy yall channel. Yepp, I pretty much only need to have this job to pay my loans since they cost so much each month. It's a bummer, but it is what it is. Love that you've been able to find something you enjoy, too!💕 thanks for watching!

Just watched this. And you already have 2.2 k subscribers (plus 1 more 😉). I’ll probably come across when you reached the 1000 monetisation line as I catch up with your content.
At first, to quit your job with so much debt and stress seemed incredibly brave yet essential for your health. Then it became clear you hadn’t quit - just switched! Hopefully, it was enough to alleviate the anxiety and feelings of being trapped.
Anyway, well done you. And Taylor. I’m so sorry you weren’t able to share your wedding day with your friends. But posting your vows and highlights enables those who view the video to quietly promise to do as much as they can to support your journey and never come between you: The main purpose of guests witnessing a marriage.
It’ll be an honour to watch your channel, farm and family grow and help those debts and doubts disappear.

I so wish I could just “quit” working in the corporate world fully but unfortunately I can’t yet. I’m working on more “side hustles” at the moment and hoping they start to add up soon. I’m very relieved to be in a new position but it’s definitely not ideal for my mental health still.
We’re hoping to someday have a reception with allll our loved ones when we have the chance to save up some money for it. We would’ve loved to have them there, and that’s why I made the video. They wanted to hear our vows and feel like they were present😌❤️ again, thanks so much for supporting us!!

So brave! I'm glad you were able to take the step! You'll miss the money, (if your new position pays less) but the good will outweigh that. Are you enjoying your week off? It's sort of hard to relax on command, haha.
Our first years of marriage I had a student loan to repay and I hated that hanging over me, particularly as I only worked as a public school teacher for a couple of years. Regardless, the role of teaching is one I've lived for over 40 years so I think that my degree paid off 😁.
One thing that really helped me in job satisfaction is when my "real" life and my professional life overlapped. That happened gradually over years but it made everything feel worth it. Even going into my retirement years has felt seamless because it is more of a continuation than a hard stop. (I volunteer for my previous employer, and it is community based.)
I'm pretty sure that the way I've worked through the years isn't the norm, though is was very good for me.
It is probably obvious? but my husband worked for more money and more hours and away from the home. Today he is out haying in the miserable heat and sun on ancient equipment that keeps breaking. He is trying to figure out why he retired early, haha. You're completely right, each journey is different, but still valid.
I need to go to the farm now but I wanted to say a big congratulations on being willing to do hard things. It will pay off. I have a reminder on my phone screen to "count the blessings" (part of a longer list of things that are my focus currently). I think you should consciously note times when things that are different and good that happen because you were willing to change direction. I know that there will be many.

Thank you! I definitely enjoyed some forced relaxation (it rained ALL week nonstop haha) I got my house pretty darn clean because I'm not good at being bored.😆 I definitely appreciate a lot of factors of the knowledge I gained in school - especially from my landscape design classes now that I'm so into gardening. I'm working on writing an ebook for brand new gardeners on how to design/layout/start a garden and I think my architecture & design knowledge is definitely coming in handy for that!
Love the "count the blessings" idea! I might have to steal that!

Women reclaiming their womanhood is a huge part of job leaving. You are here to live a human life that's beautiful, creative and nurturing. Good for you. I did the same about ten years ago with no regrets. Student loans expire after 25 years......

    • @calicocowacres
      @calicocowacres  Рік тому +1

You're so right. I truly just want to not be stressed to the max 24/7, and reducing my hours/leaving a job that I no longer feel a passion for is a huge part of that. Unfortunately half of my loans are private, and those won't expire. We'll just keep chugging along & working on diversifying our income, though!

I suspected something like that might be happening. I had no idea what job you did, but I'm impressed that you have 3 degrees. I finished high school at nearly 15 and got my first job. This was fairly normal for girls in Australia in the 1960s. I worked in admin all my life. Some jobs I enjoyed more than others but it was always about providing for my 2 girls as I was a single parent with no support from ex.
I usually had to travel an hour each way. The best part of any job I had was the people, some of them anyway, that I worked with.
I've been retired now for over 13 years. Life isn't easy but I have a roof over my head, food to eat and my daughters and grandkids around me.
You, and Taylor, will get there. You are determined and keen. I believe you will succeed in whatever you want to achieve. It mightn't be an easy road but life isn't all easy. Hang in there, and enjoy yourself along the way

Just imagine if your parents had told you as a child that the greatest life you can live is a life you build for yourself and your family. Instead of telling you "Go to college and get a degree and get a high paying job!"
I mean, just think about it. You've got massive debt for something that you don't even find much pleasure in. You'd be better off being 18, debt-free with no education just cultivating whatever land you can get your hands on while doing whatever odd jobs you can do to support your minimal-cost way of living. And building from there.
It's high time we start teaching our children that true happiness comes from family and friends and community. And true meaning in life comes from building a life for yourself and the people you love, not seeking the biggest paycheck you can get. I get it. You need money to get land and anything else. But it feels like college is a very expensive dead end for a lot of people.
Oh and.... Just have a baby already! 😘 Yes they are more hard work but you're already finding out that the hardest work is also the most rewarding. Especially when you get to see the fruits of your labor. If you do it right, children bring you far more joy than stress. Just be a mentor and treat them with love and trust and you'll see what a smart investment they are.
Good luck and God bless! 🥰❤️

Re: a baby...we'd love to. It's not necessarily the amount of work i guess...its the cost. We can't afford to take on anything else at the moment (medical, wise, as well), as much as I'd love to "just" have a baby. It isn't that simple unfortunately.

Wouldve been awesome if you'd figured out architecture wasnt your game pre going in debt $100,000 in loans. No knock on you. College is such a rip off ... which I think you can agree with at this point.
