  • A little over a year ago, I quit my job to start a farm in Vermont. Was it worth it? Well, the answer is not so simple. There have been a lot of lessons learned here on our small duck and goose farm.
About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

U better be vegan to say that💀 but even though this is much better than what big companies do to get their meat, they treat their livestock horribly, the animals end up getting infections and all that other shit and they sell those animals directly to us humans. I used to work for a farm and had to quit cuz I honestly couldn’t do what they required me to do and plus my co workers were horrible, their real assholes. They would beat them, and if they weren’t moving fast enough would literally beat them and perform sexual actions towards them. This is how animals, how our food should be treated and fed.

    • @oompapaoom112
      @oompapaoom112 4 роки тому +4

This channel is clearly not for you. We all eat meat, I eat meat, you eat meat (if ur not vegetarian) and at the end of the day it’s a required part of our diet. We’re omnivores. This man treats his livestock incredibly well, with loads of space, organic and fresh food. You really shouldn’t be complaining on this channel about animals getting killed when they are getting treated with this much respect.

    • @oompapaoom112

@Lau taro Slavery? I understand what your saying, I'm a huge animal fan as well. However you cannot confuse this to slavery. There's absolutely no chance to make the whole world vegan or vegetarian. We need and love meat and for that reason there's no way we could ever abolish this method of earning meat (keeping animals as livestock and then harvesting). The amount of farm animals being harvested into meat is less of the problem than the way they are being treated in industrial farming companies that we are mainly sufficient of.
I ask, if there is no need to kill animals in order to feed ourselves, what other approach are you suggesting?

Lau taro people will not stop eating animals. i am a vegetarian myself, but it’s unrealistic to expect vast numbers of people to be vegetarians as well. this farm and countless other farms in the small farm movement are moving us as humans towards a more ethical way of consuming meat. i understand your frustrations at the death of animals for food, but target that frustration at large meat companies who make their animal’s lives a living hell. farmers like this guy makes sure that his animals have the best lives possible before their death, and that is how it should be.

    • @horace6851

@Lau taro people eat and will eat meat, but mostly they eat meat raised in terrible, inhumane conditions. He is raising happy animals that can live as close to their natural state as possible. Everyone dies at some point and what matters is how you've spent the time given. Those geese have better lives than 99.9% livestock out there and if someone buys the goose from him instead of a factory chicken the world becomes a better place. That is changing the world with hard work and sacrifice and it's worth so much more than your approach of hostility and patronizing.

Wished i would have done that 15 years ago. Good for you. Do you feel like you were lied to about what you were supposed to be doing? Seemingly, an awful lot of people have followed what they were taught to follow in the path of big house, big car, boat, motorcycle, vacation home, plane, expensive trips to try to escape the doldrums of everyday life.
You basically lose yourself, I mean who you really are not who you thought you were supposed to be. But you already found that out.
Grew up in the DC area. It was okay when you grew up there. Once you hit adulthood, that all changes into wow, what used to be affordable is no longer achievable by the average working Joe.
Keep learning, keep marketing, keep up the hard work, cant really say it will ever pay off. But then again, the world is full of people that barely eek out a living subsistence farming.
One thing is for sure, at the end of the day you can say, "I did this." or more like, "the Mrs. and I did this."

When talking to her about the great depression she said they didn't know much about it because life on the farm was hard all the time. But if you had the land and was willing to put in the work you always had what you needed. That was when 25%of the country lived on farms, now its 2%. If another depression happens now it's going to be catastrophic.

So I'm watching your video, agreeing and relating to everything you're saying, and I hit 7:14 where you are talking about gardening nurturing this little dream you've had, and I just literally burst into tears. I don't know why it hit me so hard, but I guess it's just a shared human experience. I'm not usually so emotional about stuff but for whatever reason that just hit me hard. I feel that. It's the same thing I went through. My grandmother had a farm when I was young, and I have ALWAYS been heavily into rearing animals, growing plants, soil nutrition, etc. But it's always been on the back burner of a career in biology, and later a career as a tattoo artist. No matter what I do, I always come back to farming and building sustainable systems. I had a job recently over the summer learning more about professional landscaping and getting heavier into plant science, and it just ignited that spark even heavier, to the point that we are heavily 'backyard farming' our tiny yard in the suburbs. We bought land about 10 years ago (108 acres) for the idea to go out and farm one day, but over the past year or so it's just been pulled to the forefront as I get heavier and heavier into soil building, rearing quail, composting and gardening.
I know it sounds like 'I should have gone there a long time ago' to start farming, but I got diagnosed with a chronic illness a few years ago that set us back financially (through mismanagement and not realizing something was wrong, and failing health preventing me from working to my fullest as a self-employed person at the time, not from health care costing money, it's free here), so we're just pulling ourselves out of that debt over the next few years and then we hope to get out there, too.
Just wanted to share that for whatever reason, your experience really hit home for me.

Found you through Lumnah Acres. We are starting a small farm in southern New Hampshire. I absolutely love the work I do on the homestead, but still have to work my day job. We bought a sawmill and are making our own lumber for our outbuildings, and I am loving every minute of it. Keep at it, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life!

Farms are a great place to raise a big family too. It's a culture shock to leave a big city, and move out to the country. But when big cities are on the news showing how insane they really are, then I just step outside with only birds, deer and the occasional moose and I love it.

To be able to recognize what was going on and not just succumb to the temptation to stay because it is a "good job" and challenge yoyrself, that is the one thing many people miss. The farm looks so beautiful right now with the lush spring growth as it heads into summer. Glad the ducks and feesecare doing well and the weird little duck is getting it's feathers back. I have a similar story, I'm 37 now. I started with a small garden in my 1\3 acre yard, then got chickens... and more chickens, then goats and now a farm
I grew up working and going to school in the tech industry, but after scratching that itch it just took on a life of it's own and I can't imagine doing anything else

As a girl, I spent most of my summers on one of 2 farms. (Uncles) I had chores on each and yes, I had to tend the chickens on one. That's why I do not like chickens except as Chicken Nuggets! (Grin) Ducks? Oh, they are fun at least to me. Just as much work as chickens, but a lot more fun.

We're in southern Oregon and have just 2 1/2 acrers chickens, dogs, a small orchard , garden and still love live in the woods. Have lived through forest fire, serious health issues, but God has seen us through faithfully. This also gives our many city dwelling grandchildren an awesome place to come and spread their wings.
